African Gender Institute, University of Cape Town, South Africa Building Capacity for Feminist Research in Africa: Gender, Sexuality and Politics INVITATION FOR APPLICATIONS FOR SHORT-TERM RESEARCHER ASSOCIATESHIPS, 2007 Background The African Gender Institute (AGI) was established in 1996 with the aim of developing theoretical and practical understandings of gender and its importance in the process of social transformation in Africa. The AGI facilitates links between intellectuals, policymakers and practitioners working towards the attainment of gender equity in Africa, and achieves this through academic teaching, research work and applied project work. The AGI has received funding from the International Development Research Centre and from the Ford Foundation to support a programme of intensive capacity-building for African-based researchers, with an interest in feminism, gender and sexuality. The aims of the programme are to stimulate strong, African-based, research which takes issues of sexuality and gender seriously and to support current African research initiatives through offering in-depth opportunity to develop conceptual and methodological tools for African feminist writers and researchers relatively new to issues of sexuality The Researcher Associateships Research Associates will be hosted for a short period (3 weeks) at the African Gender Institute, University of Cape Town. During this period, Associates will participate in an intensive teaching seminar, in which they will be offered (a) in-depth exploration of contemporary theories concerning issues of feminism, gender, and sexuality with African contexts (b) sustained engagement with issues of research methodology relevant to work in sexuality and gender in diverse contexts. The seminar will be conducted in English, and led by experts in the field, including Professor Jane Bennett, of the African Gender Institute, and Dr. Charmaine Pereira of the Network for Women’s Studies in Nigeria. There will be TWO teaching seminars in 2007: • TEACHING SEMINAR ONE will take place between 6th and 27th JUNE • TEACHING SEMINAR TWO will take place between 8th and the 29th NOVEMBER Each Teaching Seminar will include opportunities to meet local researchers, to benefit from the university library and resource holdings, and to spend time engaged in reading and writing relevant to participants’ individual research priorities. Eligibility Those eligible to apply for a Researcher Associateship are African-based writers and researchers, with a qualification from a tertiary level institution, who are currently involved in research which takes gender and sexuality seriously, and who are interested in contemporary feminist theories and praxis. Each Research Associate will be offered: • Return travel from home base to Cape Town (Successful applicants will be required to process and fund their own visa applications). • Modest accommodation for the period, which will include privacy and access to TV and radio. Provision of all day-time meals during the programme for the period, except where indicated by the programme. • A stipend of R3,500 to cover evening meals, living costs and other incidental expenses including insurance for personal effects. • Formal affiliation to the University of Cape, for the duration of the period, which will facilitate access to libraries and other resources. • Shared access to computers and Internet facilities. How to apply There are 15 Researcher Associateships available for each Teaching Seminar. In order to apply, please write to the African Gender Institute, applying for a Researcher Associateship by sending the following documents: 1.
