Name: Cross Dressing and Deuteronomy 22:5

Description: The interpretation of the verse in Jewish law and tradition. It starts at birth: The girl gets the pink blanket, the boy gets the blue. What is the first thing people say when a baby is born? "Is it a boy or a girl?" And it would seem at first glance that our Torah holds such a concern, as our verse from Deuteronomy seems to prohibit "crossdressing." Let's look at the passage and how it has been interpreted by our sages.

There seems to be more to Deut 22 than simply gender. Whilst the word for 'woman' is unambiguous, the word for 'man' (geber} is not that for simply a male (Adam). Can someone clarify the precise meaning of Geber? Does it mean 'warrior'? And if so, is the prohibition against women going to war, or against the more general principle of a woman wearing something which is exclusively a male item of clothing?
