For those of us who have had SRS, is genital electro necessary before surgery?

I hate electrolysis, I can hardly handle it on my face, never mind "down there," especially since the hair is so numerous, coarse, and deep-rooted. I can't even imagine doing it for 5 seconds. Please advise.

I know this isn't helpful but, I simply cannot understand needing more than a shave or any kind of surgery.

From my research some do require it and some don't.  Some scrap the area that become the neo-vagina.  I guess it come down to what your surgeon wants.  I have not even come close to needing it, but some of the girls here have.  They will be better to advise you.

it depends on the surgeon, some will insist on getting down under cleared (bowers, reed) while others won't care less (mcginn, brassard)

the latter will zap/scrape the hair follicles from the underside during surgery

On the pre-op recommendations sheet I received from Dr. McGinn last week she listed "genital clearing electrolysis every 3-4 weeks for 4-6 months prior to surgery." You really don't want to have hairs growing on the inside of your vagina because there's no way to get in there to remove them after the fact. All surgeons scrape the follicles during surgery but because of growth cycles and whatever there's the chance they won't get them all and it it also extends the time you have to stay under anesthesia. That's why it is strongly recommended to get it taken care of as much as possible first.

There is a place in Dallas that does it quick using the method of localized anesthesia with multiple technicians working for hours at a time. They call it "south pole" hair removal and it can be quite expensive but is done in far less time so averaging the costs of a few sessions over many it could be comparable. They of course also do facial hair.

I was going to Brassard....so he doesn't care? How exactly does he kill the hair follicles?

Why can't they do this for facial hair? Sorry for the noob question...

I think they scrape the follicles off from the inside- to do this to your face you would have to peel the skin off lol

it depends on the result you want from your srs all will scrape this is part of the standard of care requirement but the groth cycles may still allow some hair to return. For a post-op having hair inside the neo-vagina can be a real embarresment during intimacy if it is desired (some do not want this) so i would recomend biting the preverbial bullet and getting it done but its your surgery and your results. Doctors that dont require it will still scrape but i imagine they will do so carelessly since the hair growth in the neo vagina isnt a concern to them.

Genital Electrolysis

Prior genital electrolysis is not recommended as there would be no hair-bearing skin in the scrotal skin graft; hair follicles are manually excised (cut) from the scrotal skin during surgery. Prior electrolysis of the scrotal area would result in scarring and thickening of the skin which would reduce its elasticity and vaginal depth. If desired, only the perineal region (perineum) between the anus to the scrotum should be cleared (which can also be cleared after SRS)[/qoute]

So they scrape the follicles off and put the skin back on, or just let it heal? If so, I still don't see why you couldn't get this done on your face.

Probably because you'd have to undergo general anesthesia and all that entails getting your bleeding face (literally) peeled off and reattached. Look at FFS operations for results of that.

Also the genitals don't go back to being normal after SRS, of course - the neovagina becomes more like the inside of an actual vagina since it becomes a cavern inside the body instead of a twig on the outside.

Dr. Suporn says that each follicle is excised (cut) during surgery.  Sounds a little different than scraping, but I don't know for sure.

From what I understand about hair growth cycles, the pore is always present so even if the follicle is not present, you could remove the pore, which I think would effectively stop hair growth.

Brassard does not require genital electrolysis.  He removes the hair follicles and pores during the surgery.  I'm a Brassard girl several years post op and there is no regrowth anywhere that he removed the follicles.  During the consultation he even asked me what hair pattern I wanted.

I and three other girls I know personally went to Brassard.  None of us had any genital electro and none of us have any hair growing "down there".

Somewhere there's a video where the scraping procedure is shown.  I've seen it but I don't remember where.

In preparation for Dr. Meltzer I had the penis and underside of my scrotum cleared.  The first pass took 1.5 hours and needed only one electrologist.  Six sessions are typically needed.

Dr. Meltzer requires this clearing be done.  Although he also scrapes and cauterizes, he considers this insufficient, and is done merely as an overlap of previous electrolysis of the area.

The Dallas electrologists (Electrology 3000) are more expensive than other providers.  But my regular electologist didn't want to touch my genitals (and I can't blame her).  So I was grateful that Electrology 3000 was willing to accept me.  Since I wasn't a regular client, and asked them to handle a private part of my body, I tipped well.
