Tab left open by accident :s
« on: November 02, 2009, 05:19:18 pm »
Well that was kinda, well, awkward.

I was showing my dad a picture of a car I'm looking to buy and left the 'Transgender Talk' tab open at the top. Mid-talking, he just kinda went quiet. Not in a bad way, more like he had absolutely no idea what to say way. I then realised that the tab was there at the top.

I'm not ready to let all out yet and this was not how I planned on introducing the idea. Ah well... Maybe it won't be such a big surprise now when I tell my parents!

They say that nothing happens by accident, Sarah.  May be you did it subconsciously to have that opening.  :eusa_whistle: :eusa_think:

But that least you have a opening now.

In my opinion, you should stop that this minute. A wise woman once said:

DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE COMING-OUT PROCESS.

It is extremely tempting to let it just happen, but it will work for you better if you control the process.

It really resonated with me when I read it, and I hope it does with you too. I wrote a few other lines but they all came out sounding preachy, I think the quote really stands on it's own.

I agree with Becca ... but just realize that if you transition, eventually you get to a point where it's out of your hands.

That sucks. I'm sorry. I didn't get to come out to my father on my own terms, and I really regret it. But it wasn't the end of the world, or even that relationship.

Well, at least your dad took it reasonably well. I mean, I could easily imagine some people totally freak out and start shouting, throwing things etc. Based on his reaction, I don't think you'll have huge trouble coming out to your parents. But, I agree with Becca and Alyssa M.: This is your transition, keep all aspects of it under your control. You may end up being in a very uncomfortable position if you still live with your parents and they find out about it before you're ready to come out. And I'm not suggesting that you should come out to them now, or any time in the near future for that matter. Do it when you are ready. I'm just saying that don't let anyone or anything hijack yor coming-out schedule.

But then again, who am I to give you advice? It's only a matter of time before something like this happens to me...

BTW, Sarah, I'll reply to your PM, well, probably in the next 48 hours or so. I've been too tired to do much of anything exept the things I have to: School, trying to apper totally normal to my parents despite of the obvious depression which I can't do anything about, etc. I've been sooo tired lately...
