Title: Transgender Support Groups in Louisiana?
Post by: DeannaStarspear on July 12, 2010, 07:12:10 PM
I was in my favorite virtual world of Second Life, and a friend of mine who is a transwoman as well advised me to get into a real life support group besides ones just on Second Life and the web before going to a therapist. My only problem with doing that is that I live in Dulac, Louisiana, and I could not find any transgender groups anywhere near where I live. I had found one group, but they were in New Orleans, Louisiana. To make things worse, they had their last meeting in February. I have searched all the popular search engines, but it almost appears that there are no such groups anywhere in our state. Does anyone know of any around Houma or Thibodeaux, Louisiana? If not, what other ways can I get support through my transition period without relying solely on my internet that has a habit of working only when it wants to? I do have my uncle, and my birth father who accept that I want to change, but don't really know enough to be my support. My recent ex knows someone who is also a transwoman. She said she will try to get around to getting this person to call me, but will just one person be enough support for me?

There's a PFLAG group in Lafayette, Louisiana.  I'm not certain where Dulac is, though.

Thanks. I also noticed they have a New Orleans and a Shreveport, Bossier City and surrounding areas chapter. I'll have to look at a map to see which chapter would be closer. Shreveport I know is definitely out, but I don't know between the other two.

You're smackdab between the two, wow.

Lafayette might be better because New Orleans is hard to navigate, but if you were to go to the New Orleans one I'd try and swing over to that meeting--I'm about 1.5 hours from New Orleans.

That would be awesome. The meetings I saw were every second Tuesday of each month. I can't make it today even though I wish I could. Thing is, I'll have to try and find a ride to go to the meetings since my uncle very seldom gets Tuesdays off and he is the only one with a vehicle for us to get around in. I'll try and ask around to see who can maybe bring me to next month's meeting.
