Title: Does straightening your hair make it grow slowerr?
Post by: justme19 on July 29, 2010, 04:58:39 AM
Im a little bit lost her..... ive been straightening my hair now for about 6 weeks, since ive been doing this it's growing sooo much slower, or so it seems.

Any other reasons why hair would grow slower? If it's any help it's also very cold in australia at the moment, if thats makes any difference.

Thanks again :)

I have heard (don't quote me on this though :P) that with the hair growing from the follicle only, nothing you do to the hair will slow it down. People say (including my mum) that if you trim your hair regularly then your hair will grow faster... yeah I don't see how that is reasonably possible. :S
I have also "heard" that the hair is more active in growth during winter and that it sheds more towards the end of summer... but I really don't know about that. Even though this past summer I did shed a lot I can't say it was due to this ... I don't know. The growth cycles in Cruelladeville link are factual but whether there is any form of syncopation with the seasons is something I don't know about. :S

EDIT: lols this is like the most unhelpful post I've ever seen hahaha aawwwww poor me  >_____>

Unfortunately for all the shampoo manufacture's  hair is dead.

The follicle producing the hair is alive and produces keratin based protein which is called hair. Nothing you do to the hairy bit, beyond pulling it out or laser or electrolysis will do much to the follicle. Straightening or curling as long as you do not pull the root out has no affect on the follicle. But hair also grows in cycles governed by circadian  rhythms, monthly cycles, and seasonal changes.

I wrote my first research paper on circadian rhythm growth of belly hair in mice. Rocked the world.

Does straightening your hair make it grow slower?
NO

Any other reasons why hair would grow slower?
Hair grows a fraction faster in summer and slower in winter, but the difference depends on the person.  This rate slows down with age. Things that influence hair growth include not only hormones, but nutrition, vitamins and other factors.

Kind regards

Straightening you hair probably won't change the rate of growth, but you can damage your hair by straightening it too often. You will need to take good care of it!

Did you try straightening it?  :D

If this Canadian Girl reads such a statement again from anyone in Australia ever then I will personally fly to Australia, drag their ass onto a plane and bring them out to the Canadian prairies in February. If they are extremely penitent then maybe I'll consider not leaving them to walk to the nearest airport.

:)

Hair does actually grow faster in the summer months.  I straighten my hair daily and haven't experience any change

not really although heat treatments can damage it, Causing loss of length through splitting. You must remember that in 6 weeks you would only get about a centimeters growth anyway.

Is that celcius or farenheit?  I think anything below 15c is cold.  I like hot, hot and very humid! :)

Agreed though I'm battling these days with anything under 22c.  Don't know how I used to like the snow when I was younger...Brrrrrrr.

Got a friend over to Australia from someplace coldsville. She asked why some people had on T shirts and others jumpers and coats when it was about 15C.  I told her that the T shirts are the English tourists and the jumpers and coats are the locals.

Please don't drag me off to a cold place. Anything below 10c needs fleecy knickers.

Hard to imagine shampooing mice bellies or cages

Thank you Ken

I only shampooed the mice. Only a guy would shampoo the cage.

Putting the highlights in was a challenge, and of course each one wanted something different.  Doing perms was a laugh. But the biggest challenge was the Mohawks.

"Nice" and cold?!?!
Now I know you are crazy! There's nothing nice about -20 to -40 (without even factoring in windchill)! Lol!

Lets trade passports! I could happily live with poisonous snakes, poisonous spiders, poisonous lizards, poisonous frogs (I watch the National Geographic channel; everything is poisonous in Australia, even the rocks right?) and God knows what else that'll try to kill me if it means that I can complain about the cold at 11 degrees celcius! You can move here and live in my igloo, I'll even give you my collection of parkas and I'll teach you how to wrestle polar bears before I get on the plane for paradise :D
