Have you ever burnt yourself out on a certain food?
« on: March 20, 2012, 07:41:38 pm »
After one too many ramen noodle dinners in a row years ago I went through a phase where I couldn't eat those anymore. Now I can eat them every once in a while, but not by themselves. Hugs, Devlyn

There was a point where it seemed like I had Chinese food once a week and then I started to hate Chinese food.  Since I don't eat it often now I continue to love it.

However, soul food on the other hand....my mother would cook fried chicken and porkchops EVERY Sunday along with other typical soul food and I used to eat it all.  Now my body has gotten to the point where I can't stomach homemade soul food.  If I even smell it then I will gag and get sick.  She still cooks soul food on Sundays but I can't eat it and everyone thinks I'm crazy for not liking her food.

Hotdogs are another food I would eat a lot but since learning of their nutritional value combined with wanting to lose weight they just don't seem as tasty anymore.

Chinese food.  When I dated this guy several years ago, he wanted to eat Chinese at least once a week and we dated for 9 months or so and that's a lot of Chinese food.  Now I can't stand the stuff.
I need time away.  I'll be back, maybe.

Peanut butter fudge.  I loved it and I ate too much of it once when I was eight or nine.  Even now the smell of it is unbearable.  My tolerance for other kinds of fudge has also plummeted.

Spam.

I went through a phase when I was a kid of eating it in abundance. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. For the life of me I have no idea why. Perhaps some form of extra-terrestrial life descended to earth and used subliminal mind-control in order to convince my adolescent taste buds that nothing else could possibly compare to the wonders of Spam, in all its vaguely meaty glory. Either that or I was a bit of an oddball with a processed meat fetish that bordered on the obsessive. My money is on that one.

Nevertheless, I can't go near it now without feeling the urge to vomit... and construct an inter-stellar beacon. Strange, that. ;)

Ramen for me too. After my mom died (she was the single parent at the time), I pretty much had to wing it. So Ramen became a staple, but now I can't stand the stuff. Except for the chili lime. That stuff is daaamn tasty, haha!! Also, blue cheese dip. First time I ever tried it, I loved it. I was about 10ish, and... I may have eaten the entire bowl. At a family function. So... yeah, huge flippin' bowl. Now I can't touch the stuff in any form. It's like I ate my entire life's limit of blue cheese in one sitting :-p

Mezcal shots ... if you consider mezcal food.

Bad incident in college which ended up with profuse vomiting.  Never touched the stuff since.  I don't even like tequila shots (tequila being mezcal's kissing cousin).

anything with bones in it gets disturbing to me by the second meal. I have made soup with bones and when you go back to eat the remainder it's like a horror movie.

But the same applies for having roast chicken two days in a row.It just starts to feel carcassy

I saw the ramen video as well.  I was so-so on ramen, but never liked Gatorade.  Gatorade tastes too close to Tang.  The Tang aversion came from a spate of Bell's Palsy, an unknown cause palsy afficting the face causing temporary paralysis on one side of it.  This condition lasts a week or two and never comes back, the reason of the unknown possible cause.  In my case as a 13 year old, it numbed the left side of my face and disabled all sense of taste but one, salt.  Tang tasted like the Pacific Ocean to me.  I did taste a salt like taste in Pepsi, but not in Coke.  I burned out on the colas while I was in tech school in the Navy, but could stand only one can of the stuff today.
I burned out on a few other food items, but got back to them.  Absence makes the heart grow fonder.  The same musical selections are another major burnout.

Gammon steaks - when I was a youngster (and not self-sufficient at that point), my mum seemed to make gammon steaks for breakfast, lunch and dinner for a month (probably an exaggeration ) but ever since then, I can barely touch the things!

Well until I found a good recipe that involves cooking them in coke! The juice, not the drugs. Its so good!

I know it sounds a bit decadent, but in my case it was Atlantic Salmon.  There are a lot of fish farms here in Tasmania, and Salmon is available pretty much everywhere.
So I proceeded to have it every way imaginable for a couple of months.  It did get a bit boring in the finish.  So I started on Mussels, Scallops and Squid, as well as the other sea fish here,  to expand my palate. :D

Hmm, I never assumed it had another name across the Pond! Yep, its a game-y cut of ham.

I had never really thought of cooking it in coke until I read that recipe, but the brisket sounds like it might be worth trying!

As an aside, when its bbq season a similar idea to the coke thing is covering chicken in a marinade of golden syrup before slinging it on the barbecue. It gives it a nice smoked caramel flavour.

Ramen, which like Devlyn I can eat upon occasion but not by itself.

I OD'd on spam a couple of years ago.

Then, there were these frozen shu mai that I loved and ate a bunch of until I began to feel there was a certain excrementitiousness to them.

My mom ate nothing but ramen for a whole month and now she can't stand them.  She says the same will happen to me if I keep eating chicken wraps the way I do. :(
