Possible Places To Relocate To In The Future
« on: May 25, 2012, 07:15:49 am »
Well ideally I would like to move to Australia but just for easy purposes I will stick with the states for now.  So here's a list of places that I am considering:

North Carolina-A little more liberal there and I could be closer to family....though I'm not sure if my family would want anything to do with me.

Texas-I could potentially have contacts that I could live with down there.  Since it will be years before I move I am not sure if the living options will still be available.

NY-It's on the East coast and more Liberal

FL- I would be closer to Dr. Garramone so that would cut down travel prices and hotel prices.  This would be my only reason to move there.  After healing I would choose to relocate.

California-This is where I WANT to move.  They have the most LBGT laws protecting us (even though it's not full proof it's better than nothing).  Anime expo takes place there so I can be right near it.  I could probably take the transit for the most part to get around so I won't need a car.  The beach is there and the surf seems decent if I ever wanted to get into surfing.  There's more diversity there and a lot of things to do there.  It's expensive, competitive, and fast pace though and I am not sure if I will be able to keep up.  That is my big concern but hopefully I can split rent with a few people there and cut back in other corners.

It seems like I have my mind made up lol.  I really want to move to California.  I know there are people who will tell me that it isn't all that great economically and otherwise but hey it's MUCH better than South Carolina.  To me  I feel like I would be escaping the oppression here.  I know there is hate everywhere you go but California seems like the more open place than South Carolina.

I really want to move to California.    Hopefully with some luck and determination I can make it there one day.  If anyone lives or has lived there and want to share your experience with me then please feel free.  I would like to move to either L.A. or San Francisco

*Side note:  I have lemonade right now.  It's pretty sour.

Calif is expensive and jobs are hard to come by. I would wait to see how they vote in the next election. There is a bill coming up calling for major cuts or increased taxes on rich.

NC i never thought of that as cool since they just passed the anti gay marriage bill.

FL is cool if you can deal with summer heat / humidity

Texas has just a few inner citie areas that are LGBT safe.. the rest is tough

NY seems to me to be your best bet.. but not NYC which is also expensive..

good luck wherever you go..

Minnesota was the first state to protect transgender folks in their civil rights bill -- 1993

It has one of the biggest transgender communities -- the University of Minnesota does lots of research on transgender youth

There is a shot clinic so if you don't want to give yourself the shot you go down there with your prescription and someone will give it to you.

I love it here & the cost of living is a lot less than CA

We have two surgeons who do top surgery - actually three --- Buckley, Tholen & can't think of the other

That's another thing that concerns me about Cali because it can seem like a hit or miss type thing.  Who knows how it would be within 5 years.

If I move to Texas then I will probably move to Houston.  I think Houston is one of those LBGT safe places right?  I also have a friend in Houston so make she could help guide me around until I got used to it.

I actually love Florida.  I don't mind the heat so much.  There's plenty of neat things to do there as well.

I think you're right about NY.  I really do need to look into NY more.

I know one thing for sure though, where ever I go I will have some money stored to help me until I can get a job.  A head of lettuce with some adobe spice will be my breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day until then.

@Robert I didn't know shot clinics existed.  That could be pretty helpful to me as I am terrified of giving my own shot.  How much does it cost to get your shot done there?

Shot clinic is free.  It was started by a transman who is an RN.  There is the Minnesota Trans health coalition too that hosts an annual transgender health conference for the community & medical providers.  I have gone twice and you get free consultations with top surgeons who come in to speak -- I have meet with Metzler, Brownstein & Garamone there.  There is also a genderfluid support group.  There are also programs available for folks under 26.  It is a very accepting community.

Wow Minnesota sounds very accepting!  Ugh my decision has gotten a little bit more harder lol!

How would you rate the weather there?  I can adapt to the weather but I've lived in a place where at the first sign of snow everything shuts down for a couple of days.

I have a Bi-girl friend who was in the States late last year, and said that Providence, Rhode Island was total Lesbiantown, and northern New York State was pretty nice too.

I'm biased, but I would say to Google "Free State Project" or "The Shire Society" (inspired by Tolkien's hobbit town). It's all about people relocating with purpose and the people I've met through it are some of the most consistently accepting of LGBT of anywhere I've lived (GA, ID, SC, CA, MA). Been here in NH for 5 years now and it's been the best 5 years of my life.

I wouldn't say New Hampshirites in general are especially LGBT-friendly, but more than you would expect for a largely rural area. It is New England, after all. People who moved here for the FSP are, however, and that's how I've made most of my friends. I would say about NHites though--they are very friendly in public and generally have an attitude of respecting other people's privacy and staying out of their business.

I am the odd duck.  Once I pass my VTNE board and acquire my license here in Oregon, I am applying to the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) as a veterinary nurse.  Then once I an licensed/certified in the UK, I am off to the UK.

Minnesota has been great.  We moved from Oklahoma so I admit that first winter was tough!  However, nothing shuts down - they have snow plows out immediately.  You have to embrace the winter.  It's not so bad now - five years later.  There is lots to do in the winter - skiing, dog sledding, sledding, broom ball --- Minnesotans handle the winter well.

Oregon oregon oregon oregon. Cuz I'm biased. "Biased," btw, is a word my daughter thinks is an expletive.

I don't know what part of California you are interested in, so I think I'll not comment on that. It's a big state.

I find Texas terrifying. I've only fleeting and infrequent contacts with a few of its cities though.

@Robert I've always wanted to do those kind of things.  We get snow once a year here if we are lucky so when I make a snow angel I quickly find myself in mud

@Felix I've also researched great transfriendly things about Oregon.  That's another state that kind of fell off the map.

@Cindy I can feel my body twitching already.   :-\

Malachite - California is incredibly diverse, not only in the people and cultures, but the land as well.

I can't believe I'm gonna recommend this while I'm frantically trying to move out of here, but don't automatically write off all that boring flatland in the middle of California. It's actually not a bad place to live, just kinda boring if you want a nightlife or a real city downtown. You can always drive a few hours to S.F. or L.A. if you want to do something on the weekends. And there's Yosemite, which is pretty badass.

I wouldn't recommend it as a place to spend the rest of your life, but someplace like Fresno, Visalia, or Bakersfield wouldn't be a bad transitional stop to save money and start T. Aside from the cost of the T refills, my transition's basically been free through Planned Parenthood. And rent here is way cheaper than SF/LA. From what I've seen on Craigslist, it looks like Fresno's a bit higher than Portland. (Yeah, I know that probably only helps Janet and Felix, but that's the only other city I've looked at lately  :P)

Again, this isn't a ringing endorsement like Robert's giving you for Minnesota, just something to consider. It really is boring here...and hotter than hell in the summer.

My eyes are totally set on California. We can be roommates!!! ^.^ lolz. I probably should look at more states but a huge chunk of them seem conservative. Ugh, especially Utah and Texas.

And I think I'll probably just live in the states, cause I don't mind the U.S., and immigrating sounds hard and expensive. >.< But I'd totally live in Norway!! ;D

Edit: Also have you ever surfed in California? The water's freezing!!!

Well i have lived in N. Calif in the redwood forest. I hate deserts and places without trees. I am fair skin and burn easily = cancer.  They have many hippies there and they are so easy but get stoned all the time.. check out www.kmud.org   named because for 6 months its muddy and for the other 6 months its totally dry.. It hardly freezes but it can rain for 4 months long each winter. Up in the mountains there is snow.. Jobs are there because most grow pot and are too stoned or lazy to work.. I had a FTM friend who came there and lived with me in 2004 to 2006 who did great there.

but there is no city life except for hippie stuff which can be cool if your into that..

oh up north in eureka and arcata there are colleges.. there the sun barely shines in the summer due to fog.. it is the furthest point west in the continental US

@Trista we definately can be roomates if you don't mind me gaming all night.  :)

@Amazon I would probably fold there.   :o
