Transexual "Mother-Hood" and Breast-feeding (LACTATION)
« on: January 29, 2008, 06:06:30 pm »
HI All,

I am new to this site. So let me tell you a little bit about myself:

I am a 25 Pre-Op TS, based in London and have been a TS for the last 7.5 years (Hormones regularly since 17.5 years). I am unlikely to do the "Big Op" anytime in the near future "if ever". I've been in a LTR for the last 5 years with a wonderful and supportive guy. Well to cut a long story short a year ago we were speaking about kids, and its got to a point where we are now both very serious about adopting or some form of surrogacy with maybe my or his sister!

I realise sadly that I will never be able to "physically" bere kids (unlikely in my life-time). Would be interesting to see if anyone is actually doing any research in this are (TG/TS Pregnancy)

Question 1 -

However I have heard about TG-Lactation. Basically I would like to Breast feed my baby. As I feel this is an important part of the mother/child "bonding cycle", and is something both and and my partner are serious in persuing.

Do you now how I should start lactation? I Have at various times had a some Milk, but nothing very significant (i'd say a few tea spoons at most). I have a good size "Natural Hormone Breasts" 36C (no implants). Is there any additional hormones I should take (I heard Pro-Lactin produces milk), do they have that in tablet form. Any advise you can give on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Question 2 -

I am considering Implants in the fairly near future - Would having implants affect the "Lactation Process in my breasts".

Question 3 -

Is been a Transexual (pre-op) Mum/Mom much the same as a regular mom. Is it harder? Easier? Any help and advise would be appreciated - If you can fwd me links that would be even more appreciated!!

Apologise I realise this may seem like an odd thread/post for some ppl...

Sincere Regards

Jay

Children need parents.  Being a parent requires growing up first.  Growing up, in terms of being a parent requires being realistic.  Take it from there.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

HMMM - Unusual "advice" Tekla... If I was NOT grown up I would never have asked the question. I am realistic with regards to Kids etc... What are trying to say TS ppl can't / should not have kids (rubbish).

I know for sure... Lactation is realistic... If you don't know much on this subject then just say that!!

Thank You ??? :-\

I  think it's absolutely wonderful that you and your guy are seriously thinking abut starting a family, and if you do go the seregate way keeping it in the family. I remember reading about a man and his wife had contracted with a woman to have their baby and once she had it she found out that the woman was a transsexual and the whole thing ended up going to court more because the seregate mother felt that the baby that she had just given birth to more belonged to her. BTW, how many kids has either sister had, technically I've heard that it's better if they've had more than two.
Jays77, I like the adice that Renate gave to you. I wasn't aware that transsexuals could develope milk in their breasts the same way that natal womane do.

Good luck with everything

I know this is an older topic, but I can see that the original poster/questioner didn't get a fair shake for an answer.

Yes...males can and have historically lactated.

There are a few documented situations of either need or desire to breast feed a child.

Try to Google for "Milk Men" and see where that goes.

As far as the ability...yes..it takes another hormone, but you can generate milk and you should not be ashamed of anyone's answers that put you off on your quest.

You will have, if you don't already, the glands and ducts forming from your estrogen program..and what you need to find now is a supportive endocrinologist with the correct motivation to help you with this. The boobs you're growing aren't just fat and water.

I would, however, eschew the implants until you get your project going first. You might be pleasantly surprised at the size and shape of your breasts when they are full of milk and not silicon.

First of all, congratulations on your decision, a parent! Very cool!

I believe that discussing dosages is against forum rules, but I don't believe it's against forum rules to give drug names, and vague advice.

You should look into motilium, many genetic females use this drug to increase breast milk supply. Saw Palmetto and Fenugreek are herbals that are said to increse breast milk production (and size), but probably do not do so significantly.

I can persanally confirm the effectiveness of motilium, I once used it in with the (misguided and stupid) belief that it would increase my natural breast size, but it was certainly effective at incresing milk production, that is about all it's effective at.

In any case, please consider consulting a doctor about this, it could be bad for your baby's health to breastfeed from a MTF who is taking hormones and antiandrogens and other drugs.

From what I have heard it probably would, but I am no expert in this sense.

Hi Jay hon, well that's a mighty big decisions to make and I do agree with Kirsa about considering consulting a doctor about this is about the best advice one can give unless they have had a similar experience. Hon I do pray that you find your answers, I have had 11 children under my roof through the years, three of my own, two girls one boy. Had three nieces and one nephew in my care quite regularly in my younger years, and one foster daughter left in my care for a time.

This was all before I even knew what TS and transitioning was about. Just when I began going full time, I had three more children put in my care, while the mother, who had been  a good friend, went and made the mistake of going back using drugs again. Hell, me always the rescuer, I even baby sat her for a while, the kids were way more fun. That was my last kick at the can as for having children under my roof. I loved everyone of those children, and even at 62 years of age I would still not hesitate having one more child to care for.

May God bless and I will send prayers that a child will be yours in the not to distant future.

Cindy

I think the odds of finding a doctor who knows anything about this is very remote.

I do remember someone telling me about seeing old men nursing babies when he was in Viet Nam. The young women were out in the fields working so the old men and women did the nursing. I did not believe the man who told me this at the time. Since then I have found out that it is the sucking that makes the milk come in whether the person has had a baby or not. My daughter nursed an adopted baby successfully. She got her information about what hormones to take and the use of a breast pump from a yahoo group devoted to the subject of nursing an adopted baby. So my advice is to look for yahoo groups devoted to lactation, or pumping. If you try this route it involves taking hormones and using a professional pump every 2 hours to stimulate milk production. But you will be able to do it. My daughter didn't have enough milk to feed the baby without additional formula but it was enough to have the close relationship she wanted.  Good luck to you

I have some info for you, there is a site that covers this topic, basically inducing lactation for the transexual mother.

www.secondtype.com/lactation.htm

Also if you do research, you will find implants can actually due harm being able to lactate effectively.

Progestins as part of HRT in transition are important because ducts won't form without them as part of the regiman, so if your just taking estrogen only its best to talk to doctor about your desires and getting the right hormones to meet your needs and desires as not all docs prescribe both.

You can read about hormonal changes pregant women go through but like others have said, your endo is the way to go in taking the correct hormone. I would tell you what it is but I'm not sure thats allowed here? From what I've seen, other countries don't prescribe this very often to their M2F patients where it seems to be part of the HRT cocktail in the US? My breasts are very sore right now from my doc recently increasing my hormones. He told me that I will most likely begin having milk and not to worry unless it gets to much, then he will adjust things.

Best of luck to you both! Sounds absolutly wonderful!
