I get ringing in my ears a lot, especially my left ear, and I know that can be normal as we age and those little hairs in the inner ear die off one by one.

But I also sometimes get a sudden deafness in that ear, and it only lasts a few seconds, but when the hearing comes back there is especialy loud ringing in my ear for a while.  I'm wondering if that is also normal, but I can't find any info on google about it.  Does anyone else experience it or have information about it?

Hi.

If the ringing is persistent, it doesn't actually have to do with the hairs most of the time.   That's Tinnitus, which is very common.  Nobody knows what causes it but it as it generally happens in the inner ear.  There is a very brief ringing that occurs when the hairs die, but it's usually very short.

Some medications can actually cause hearing loss after prolonged and frequent usage.  Ibuprofen, for example, is a particularly common one that most people don't know about. (I think they call them Ototoxic medications.)  Here's a pretty verbose list of drugs that are considered ototoxic.

It could be the sign of something more serious too, you should talk to your General Practitioner or an Audiologist.

Like the others, I get the same. I have a constant, high pitched tone on my left ear.

I blame it on the time when I thought listening to various music on headphones, (starting with Tubular Bells), was the most amazing thing ever.

As others have said, possibly tinnitus.

There are specialist physiotherapists in Australia who treat tinnitus quite well. Cured my wife's problem. Maybe such people exist in your domains.

It can get to be very nasty

Sorry
