Hedy Jo Star (1920-1999) (born Carl Hammonds) is the author of the following book:

The first fully autobiographical book of a person who transitioned from male to female. Christine Jorgenson didn't publish her book until the 1960's. Apparently, Hedy Jo was intersex and displayed gynecomastia and other female phenotypical traits as she progressed through puberty. At 17 she ran away from home and joined a carnival as an exotic dancer and sideshow exhibit. In 1956 she visited an endocrinologist who prescribed HRT but could not help with any surgical options because it was illegal at that time in New York under the mayhem laws. She eventually found a surgeon to do her GRS in 1962 but the results were amateurish. Sadly, little else is known about her life.
