It’s Official: Republican National Convention Adopts Platform that Discriminates against LGBT Americans

Washington, DC – On July 18th 2016, delegates at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland adopted a platform that enshrines discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.

“It’s disappointing that the far right wing of the Republican Party has successfully pushed for a platform that discriminates against LGBT Americans and their families,” Matt McTighe, executive director of Freedom for All Americans, said. “This platform just does not reflect the direction that many Republicans – nor the majority of Americans – want to see the Party move.”

Amongst the planks adopted today is a measure celebrating states that have filed a lawsuit attacking a recent guidance from the federal government calling on public schools to allow transgender students to use the facilities and participate in activities that match their gender identity.

The acutely anti-transgender platform comes as the Fairness USA coalition prepares to debut an ad featuring a transgender woman on national television on Thursday night, as Donald Trump accepts the Republican nomination. The ad has already garnered more than 2.5 million views since going online last week, and is available to view at www.fairnessusa.org. Organizations supporting the ad include Freedom for All Americans Education Fund, Movement Advancement Project, National Center for Transgender Equality and Equality Ohio Education Fund.

The RNC platform goes after legally married same-sex couples as well. Another plank in the platform endorses the so-called First Amendment Defense Act, which is being considered in the US House of Representatives. The legislation would allow some businesses and non-profits – including those that receive federal funding – to discriminate against same-sex couples and their families.  The bill is similar to a measure that a U.S. District Court judge in Mississippi struck down two weeks ago, claiming it clearly violated the First and 14th amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

“The conventions are a great part of our nation’s democratic process. They were designed to highlight what makes our country so special; unfortunately, this year, the GOP has decided to enshrine discrimination against LGBT Americans in its platform instead of advocating for fairness and equality under the law,” McTighe added.

  1. Anyone in the LGBT community, especially transgender people, that vote GOP, is a betrayer of their own interests, my interests, and the interests of all LGBT people in America. Quislings, the lot of you.

  2. Like the slogan “any (group of choice) voting Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders”

Misty Plowright isn’t winning simply by being trans. She’s going to win because Doug Lamborn is a fascist moron.
