Alarming Erosion Of LGBTQ Acceptance Worldwide

Davos, Switzerland – GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, today announced the findings of its fourth annual Accelerating Acceptance report, a national survey among more than 2,100 U.S. adults conducted on GLAAD’s behalf by The Harris Poll. The results were announced during a panel discussion hosted by GLAAD and The Ariadne Getty Foundation at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

For the first time in the report’s history, GLAAD and The Harris Poll found a drop in acceptance of LGBTQ people. As President Trump prepares to address the heads of state, business leaders, and largest philanthropists at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, GLAAD is on the ground in Davos to shine the spotlight on the rollback of LGBTQ acceptance, debut new initiatives, and be the lead voice for LGBTQ people around the globe.

“In the past year, there has been a swift and alarming erosion of acceptance which can only be fought by being visible and vocal,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “This report puts numbers to the bias that too many LGBTQ Americans have recently experienced. GLAAD is fighting the rollback by enlisting philanthropic leaders like the Ariadne Getty Foundation and global changemakers attending the World Economic Forum to use their platforms and move our community forward.”

GLAAD also announced a $15 million lead gift from the Ariadne Getty Foundation to fund part of the GLAAD Media Institute’s launch along with investments in LGBTQ ventures, including media and small businesses, that create social impact worldwide and accelerate acceptance.

GLAAD and The Harris Poll Results Show LGBTQ Acceptance Dropping

GLAAD and The Harris Poll’s Accelerating Acceptance report, which measures American attitudes toward LGBTQ people and issues, shows a dramatic drop in the number of non-LGBTQ U.S. adults who were “very” or “somewhat” comfortable with LGBTQ people.

  • Less than half of non-LGBTQ adults (49 percent) reported being “very” or “somewhat” comfortable with LGBTQ people across seven situations. This is a significant decline from 53 percent last year and the first time the Accelerating Acceptance report has shown a drop in acceptance for LGBTQ people.
  • GLAAD and The Harris Poll found that 55 percent of LGBTQ adults reported experiencing discrimination because of sexual orientation or gender identity. This number is a significant 11 percentage point increase from the previous year (44 percent).
  • There was a decline in non-LGBTQ adults’ comfortability around LGBTQ people, particularly in more personal situations. Compared to last year’s results, significantly more respondents noted that they would be uncomfortable learning a family member is LBGTQ (30 percent vs. 27 percent), having their child’s teacher be LGBTQ (31 percent vs. 28 percent), and learning their doctor is LGBTQ (31 percent vs. 28 percent).

The Harris Poll was conducted online November 16-20, 2017 among a total of 2,160 US adults. 1,897 are classified as non-LGBTQ adults.

“An unseen casualty of a tumultuous year has been the LGBTQ community,” said John Gerzema, CEO of The Harris Poll. “In a single year, we’ve seen significant declines from what had been an increasingly accepting America to one now less supportive. And this lost ground of acceptance cuts across many in American society”.

The Ariadne Getty Foundation Pledges $15M to Accelerate LGBTQ Acceptance

To combat the rising threats to LGBTQ acceptance, GLAAD launched the GLAAD Media Institute today during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The Institute is a groundbreaking new training, consulting, and research venture that builds upon and furthers GLAAD’s successful legacy of leveraging media, business, and cultural institutions to effect positive change with advocates around the world.

The Ariadne Getty Foundation is a founding partner of the GLAAD Media Institute and announced a $15 million pledge to build the Institute as well as advance GLAAD’s work to invest in LGBTQ ventures, including media and small businesses, that have social impact worldwide.

“The time is now for world leaders and all of us to stand by marginalized communities and promote equality and diversity,” said Ari Getty, President of the Ariadne Getty Foundation and current member of GLAAD’s Board of Directors. “GLAAD has always been the leader in creating a better world for LGBTQ people. This lead gift will not only ensure that work continues, but will hopefully inspire others to join us in our pursuit of 100 percent acceptance.”

Research Method

The fourth annual Accelerating Acceptance survey was conducted by GLAAD and The Harris Poll among a nationally representative sample of 2,160 US adults of whom 1,897 are classified as non LGBTQ adults.  The online survey was administered November 16-20, 2017.

    My comment following:

    1.) Non-LGBTQ American Adults “very comfortable” or “somewhat comfortable” with LGBTQ > 53% dropping to 49% “particularly in more personal situations”.

    2.) LGBTQ experienced 11% more discrimination over the same time period. (44% increasing to 55%)

    Well hey, do these statistics possibly imply that, our “personal situations” are becoming more personal? “More personal” sounds like a little progress to me. Polarization, if and when the more personal, can quickly weed out or just illuminate all the nonsense and social political correctness. What’s left may be more the real McCoy! Nothing good comes easy, especially “the real McCoy”!

    So maybe we had better live the “real McCoy” more often. I suggest that at top of a useful “to do” list, we be the more humble, more giving, more unassuming, more courageous, more sincere, and much more respectable trans-girls. After all, the only folks we can change, is us folks!

    People tend to more willingly respect and to honor the fuller and more courageous genuineness, so long it doesn’t harm other people. When this be the case, much of the time they will give their respect, even if they don’t understand what they are looking at. Assuming of course, that everone involved is being treated equally appropriate, each by the other. Respect is always required from both sides. Let’s not forget that “what goes around comes around”. Respect means, among many things, not using or harming other people, as most folks enjoy receiving love just as much, at least, they do giving love. Although nonetheless, there are in fact plenty of folks who will insist otherwise, and or, may also demand the free and unhindered exercise of their own pressing prerogative. But remember, what you sow likewise you will surely reap. Kind of like physics.

    In my book, sex work, on both sides, is mostly “using people”. It’s mostly sex workers and their (usually) closeted johns who leave the reputation of transgenderism so much in the dust, of so compromised and disminished repute.

    Allow me to offer, that sex workers and their johns both need developmental psychotherapy, for the building of their own greater self-love, much more than they need, just another sexy session of self-defeating escapism. If you need proof of that, just consider in general, the usual social and personal wake of “self-defeating escapism”. Consider especially the harm to all things regarding societal provision for children. More self-interested to an individual, consider the harm to one’s own self esteem, their social prospects, their economic situation, and even the furtherance of something trans people yearn so much for, “normal social acceptance”.

    Please, let’s get real girls, unless you just really like tons of non-stop sex, alternatively then, better we work for the creation of substantive relationships, that will bring our trans community infinitely more “respect” and in turn, more social acceptance.

    If a sex worker and you just need some money, consider instead receiving charity, more humble work, or just doing without. Doing without builds character. Nobody in America need stave or even be homeless, although food and shelter always come one way or another, with some give-and-take.

    By the way, a trans-person in any relationship is by definition participating in a “trans-relationship”. To imagine anything else is at best wishful thinking. From what I can see, roughly 90% of “gender-normative” persons are not interested in trans-people at all. Among the remaining 10%, are as we know, too many “gender-normative” persons interested in sex only. But please don’t play into the strengthening of those numbers. Work in the opposite direction. We are the people being “different” so it”s mostly a job for us to do. Most of the work burden is upon us. That’s OK with me. I will be responsible.

    Although not necessarily, being trans can be a very lonely proposition, so be it. Own this, look for and work for real and meaningful social substance, and happiness will eventually ensue.
