Homemade pizzas
« on: November 04, 2011, 10:16:27 pm »
Hi everyone.

I just made some homemade pizzas and I thought I'd share incase anyone was interested. They turned out really well.

I used:
a pizza tray
olive oil cooking spray
wholemeal wheat wraps i.e. tortilla wraps (lebanese bread works too)
tomato paste
shredded mozzarella cheese
hungarian mild salami
oregano
garlic

Fairly simple! Sprayed the dish with cooking spray and preheated the oven to 200C.

Laid out the wheat wraps and spread the tomato paste over it, leaving some uncovered around the edges for a crust.
Sprinkled the mozzarella over it too, then sprinkled some oregano over the cheese. I sliced the salami - just a couple of slices, as the pizza is only really for 1-2 people depending on how big the base is - and laid it out over the cheese. I diced up one section of a garlic clove and added that evenly over the pizza, with a tiny bit more oregano.

I put the pizza onto the tray and put it in the oven for about 12 minutes. Anything between 10-15 minutes should be fine, depending on how well done you like it all to be - the crunchier the crust the better IMO.

Slice into 4-6 pieces and serve! Tastes great.

Most definitely is! And quite cheap to make too compared to how filling it actually is. :D
I made two of these for my girlfriend and I, and although they aren't very large pizzas, we didn't completely finish the ones we had. I'm sure it will make for a great midnight snack later.  :P

For the wraps, tomato paste, a bag of mozzarella cheese and about 350-400g of shaved salami, it would have cost me about $12-$14AUD.
I just got a small shaker of oregano and a whole clove of garlic - it depends on where you buy it really, but I assume for both of those it would be around $4-$5 max. So to make a good couple of them it'd be no more than $20  :)

I make my own bread and the recipe works for pizza bottom too.

The recipe is pretty easy and rather simple.

480 grams flour (I use wholewheat primarily)
9 grams salt
~ tablespoon sugar (this is food for the yeast and is consumed, still, I prefer to use raw sugar)
12 grams dry yeast
and 3dl of lukewarm water (I use beer/pilsner instead of water when making pizza dough and a little less sugar and add about a tablespoon of olive oil to give it a more pizza like consistency)

This bread needs about 20-30 minutes to rise before shaping and then should be given another 20-30 minutes before cooking for pizza, 50-60 minutes for "bread".

'course, when I make home made pizza, I make three, each one personalized for each one of the three people in the house and then this recipe is just the right amount of bread for us.

If you end up giving them a go Logan, let me know how it turns out  :D

Thanks Miniar. I think I'll try something like this in the new few weeks and see how it compares to using the wrap  :)

I use olive oil but I have never acquired a taste for olives.
A good pizza is great to have.

A perfect philosophy Danielle!!  If I'm taking the time to make my own pizza, I don't cut corners!  Chicago-style Deep Dish, homemade sauce, Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Chopped Black Olives, Freshly-grated Mozzarella and Parmesan!

Now I'm hungry!!

Hugs!!

Caela,

Have you had pizza since your craving for one?  Did you make it?

I don't know what Caela did, but YES, I made a small pizza for lunch on Wednesday and brought it work,
I keep frozen pizza dough in my refrigerator and in my freezer.

That sounds like a good plan, to store the dough for future use.

If you have a cast iron pan, the Crispy Cheesy Pan Pizza recipe on the King Arthur Baking website is super yummy, easy and you don't need a super hot oven to make a great pizza. This combination is a rarity for homemade pizza recipes, and for that reason it is my go-to for homemade pizza from scratch. The only thing is that you need to start prepping the dough a day ahead of time for the best-tasting dough (but it's worth it!).

Might try cooking a pizza in or on a grill.  I think that @Devlyn makes great tasting pizzas using a wood pellet grill.

This is something I’d like to do as well at some point, and I’ve watched a few videos on this topic. Both King Arthur Baking and Kenji Lopez-Alt have great YouTube videos on making pizza on a grill.
