Suicide Resources--Phone, Websites, Text, Chat
« on: December 19, 2011, 11:55:26 am »
If you are feeling suicidal and need help, please remember that the members at Susan's are not trained for such an emergency. A suicide hotline can save your life.

The information below is accurate to the best of my knowledge; do notify me if you find a mistake. These resources are offered in the spirit of community. Neither Susan's nor any of its members shall be held responsible for any errors.

If you call one of the numbers and it does not work, please get the help you need from another hotline or your country's emergency number (in the U.S. and Canada, call 911; in the U.K., call 999 or 112; in Australia, call 000; in the E.U., call 112).

I had better luck with a hotline recently. They successfully talked me down, got me focusing on things that were positive in my life, and displayed quite an impressive intellect. After I stopped crying we talked about books for about half an hour. It's terrible that I needed it but I was so thankful that it was there as a resource for me.

In the UK there are some LGBT helplines.
I'm in Oxford so I know "Oxford Friend" 01865 726893.
I also know about "London Friend" but the best idea might be to search for "<where you live> Friend" and LGBT.

While this isn't a hotline, per se, it might be useful for anyone who doesn't have access to a phone or would prefer talking to someone online: https://www.imalive.org/

National Suicide Prevention Hotline's a joke. Don't waste your time with them. I've called them twice, with the same terrible results, and wrote about it here.

Part one: https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,159482.msg1359481.htm
and
Part two: https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,160378.msg1371742.html

NOTE: Some people have contact with poorly trained staff. Some get contact from excellent staff. Please always contact support services if you are feeling suicidal. Try another number if you are not helped. But get help. Your life is important to us.

I'm updating these stickies to incorporate some suggestions that people are making.

If you feel like volunteering, you should probably google the particular services you like and see if they are accepting volunteers. On second thought, I'll just add URLs for each service.

The Trevor Project helps people UNDER twenty-five, but I'm not sure whether the hotline contacts will even ask about your age.

P.S. Looks like I'll have to work on this in bits and pieces over the next few days. I'm triggering already. Yikes.

I volunteer for translifeline and we are always looking for volunteers to help answer calls. we are completely volunteer based and all gender nonconforming. the basis behind it is who understands transgender issues and what we are going through then on of us.

The number of calls that we have been receiving have been getting more and more, and unfortunately we lack the steady man power to answer them all.
