What do you think of my HRT regimen?
« on: September 13, 2017, 05:51:42 pm »
I would like to partially transition by taking finasteride permanently and estrogen on a three month cycle (on for 3 months then off for 3 months).

My goal is to relieve dysphoria and to just achieving a more feminine form (I'm 19 and already of a slim build so it wouldn't be too different). However, I would like to retain sexual fertility in the long run. Hence temporary sterility is fine to me as long as I can regain fertility when I want children. I understand that banking is the usual answer but I cannot afford that at this moment and I truly want to conceive my children in the usual way.

What do you think?

I think deliberately cycling estrogen like that is a bad idea.  You wouldn’t really get the form you want as whatever you get in three months will likely be erased in the following three months.  Plus you will be keeping your endocrine system constantly disrupted.

I can't imagine you'd stay fertile. And I've been off HRT twice, I  don't think you'll like that.

I think that if preserving your ability to have kids is a deal breaker for you, then start saving, get another job, do what you need to do to get the money to bank sperm and then put the pedal to the metal on a full transition dose.   In my experience transition is about identifying the biggest obstacle in one's path right now and putting your energy into removing it so you can get unstuck and move forward.   Also, at your age you'll most likely need a better anti-androgen than finasteride to get the results you want.

Good News/Bad News:

The bad news? Unfortunately transition does require sacrifice in one way or another.
The good news? You get to live the rest of your life as a woman.

Bad idea.  On and off estrogen for 3 months at a time?  Thats just asking for no results and stressing your body.  If you want, go on hormones and STAY on them for a while to see how you feel, then stop if you dont like it, but dont plan that cycle.  You might be surprised, estrogen might feel more normal than you thought and then you want to stay,

This sounds like a bad idea and will most likely not do what you expect. Taking cross gender hormones without any plans to eventually transition to your new gender is just going to produce either unexpected and unwanted results. I expect to see you not really feminize at all and the ability to maintain your male reproductive ability is seriously questioned.

If you want children in the future, banking sperm is the safest way to keep your options open. Once you have done that, then full speed ahead for the transition.

What you want is not going to work.  You anytime you mess with your hormones your fertility will be effected and there is no way possible to know if it going to be permanent...

As a doc who does trans hormones, I agree with all the other posters that this is a bad idea. Get an extra job and save the money or get a loan to bank your sperm.
While you may be a slender 19 year old now, (bio) men continue to go through puberty well into the early 20s. Now is a prime time to transition before you masculinize too much. If you're doing this 3 mos on and 3 mos off to feminize or prevent masculinization I don't think it's going to work, and you're going to be a puddle of an emotional, hormonal mess!
My advice: bank your sperm and transition asap before you further masculinize.

Thank you for your response! I should add I wouldn't transition socially and would just like a feminine body to feel more comfortable with myself. Also, do you think that the taking estrogen alone for 6 months on and then 6 months off may be better to do that while retaining fertility?
