About eight years ago my wifemwas told if she didn't quit smoking she would be having major surgeries w/i 10 years or so. That day we went to a vape shop and started vaping. I know, we're still addicted to nicotine, but both my wife and I noticed a difference in our breathing within about a week. We have since stepped way down on nicotine, almost none. I am not going to say we immediately stopped, but I know neither one of us has had a cigarette in at least five years. We will eventually not have any nicotine, and then it will just be the flavor. And eay to stop if we choose.

Allison

Edit : It is a whole lot cheaper too. Like just a fraction of the cost.

Well done Allison

I myself am approaching 4 years (In May it will be 4 years) since I quit smoking cold turkey. It was one of the hardest things I have done, nicotine withdraw is not funny.

But I am so happy I did it, since my quitting, my husband and I have adopted kids and I am so happy I can show them the example of healthier living.

My mother, who also was a smoker, told me she was upset when she learned I was a smoker, but she could not say anything since she smoked to. We did use to smoke together, it was actually nice mother and daughter bonding time.

My mother actually started and quit twice in her life. She started at 15 years old, quit when she was 20 (when she met my father - he never liked her smoking), then she started again in her 40s when he passed away (she said the stress of everything drove her to smoking). She smoked for over 10 years second time round, her second husband was a smoker. She quit the second time actually in support of him, he had a heart issue, so the doctor told him, quit or die.. she decided to support him. Since me and my step siblings were smokers, we all never smoked in front of him from that day onwards.

I can say, these days I cant handle cigarette smoke, that smell.. My husband smokes cigars socially and he only smokes when he out with his buddies. I hate kissing him when he gets home after he smokes. I often say, yuck you smoked.
Enjoying ride the hormones are giving me... finally becoming the woman I always knew I was

I am a non-smoker and I have never smoked anything at all my entire life. Consider my opinions on this subject somewhat biased, but here is my thoughts anyway.

I have noticed that smokers and non-smokers tend to stay within their own social groups. Few if any of my friends are smokers. While I have no anomosity toward a person who choses to smoke, I find the odors unpleasant and I just tend to leave the area.

I do not lecture smokers on the dangers of smoking. I let former smokers do that. I have noticed that the former smokers seem to be the most aggressive when a discussion turns to quiting smoking. Since I am not involved in this fight, I only answer questions when I am specifically asked about the various products such as nicotine patches, that may help someone quit smoking.

Nicotine addiction is only one aspect of smoking. There is also the appeal of the social settings. Also, do not forget about the taste of various tobacco products. Quiting smoking is a multi-faceted issue that must be addressed on all issues if quiting is to be successful for the rest of a person life.

That is so true Rakel. You have to want to quit to successfully quit. To be honest before my health scare, that caused me to quit, I never had the desire or the will to quit smoking. Besides my family been smokers, my close circle of friends, were all smokers, so smoking was a big part of my social life.  I did enjoy it, I use to smoke menthol cigarettes and I loved that minty taste. I did quit cold turkey, no nicotine patches or gum etc.

as I said, quitting was hard, even though I the will to quit. I smoked my last cigarette, a few hours before I was rushed to emergency room, I never knew it be my last one. I did come close to caving once, but I am glad I never caved and smoked.. I know I would not have the strength to stop again.

Now some 4 years later, out of my close friends (4 of us, only 1 still smokes, 2 quit when they had kids, myself story you know, the other still smokes) My family, I have 3 step siblings, my step sister, who is my age, stopped when she had her first kid, the other 2 still smoke.
