Weapons, shooting, guns.

--- Quote from: Rachel Montgomery on January 08, 2022, 10:43:49 pm ---That is technically true, but grossly misleading. The only reason it is true is the tendency for people to use firearms to commit suicide. If you live by yourself, and you aren’t suicidal, you should be safer with a gun than without. If you live alone and you are suicidal, ask a friend to hold them for you until you are better.
Whether you have a gun or not, situational awareness and getting yourself out of sketchy places is best. The only real difference is, if you have a gun you have the option to use it to protect yourself. If you don’t have a gun, you can’t use a gun to protect yourself. That is the only difference.

I know I probably read this wrong but I thought the study on this said you are more likely to be shot with your gun then if you don't have your gun. What? Kind of a DUH... I thought how am I going to be shot with "my" gun if I don't have one? I'm not sure I'm wrong either. I used to be in Research and Development and people published some <not allowed> that really was that bad and expected everyone to buy into it.
I have a close friend who was totally against guns of any kind and told me that his opinion on them had changed when Florida passed a law allowing people to carry guns. He said like an old Saturday Night Live skit a TV report of a little old lady with a purse with a huge gun in it had reduced crime for everyone except overseas tourists where crime went up. *The only people known to be unarmed. I said the fear that someone might be able to defend themselves (And shoot the bad persons nads) off was probably lowering gun crime more then laws banning guns that "looked" like military rifles. If you own one I think you should know how to use it properly. If your a convicted violent criminal I think you should probably not be authorized to carry firearms but seriously... How difficult would it be to control that what with the number already in circulation?
I''m not too sure about a .357 versus a grizzly. I think while that is a fine weapon that critter would just get more angry. Maybe stick with the 44 and a couple of speed loaders. Aim low and fire often. Oh... If your getting too much of a kick get one with a longer barrel. With normal length barrel its pretty tame.

I just finished a class in social psych and the next to last chapter was on aggression. It made those points with guns, that it's more dangerous to have one in the home. I think there's motivated reasoning on both sides. There's Jon Lott on one side showing data to confront that bias and then there's the other side. I have to wonder if not having a gun and being in a situation where one is a victim of crime makes it more likely to have a negative consequence?
I've read more than a few stories of bear attacks. Sometimes some seemingly marginal calibers do ok and sometimes not. I would consider 357 minimum against large bears. A 454 Casul/45 LC would be better as would 44 mag, but then it's who is using the tool.
My wife wants to go to Alaska for a vacation, like this fall. Not sure the end of September is the best time of year weather wise. She's really attracted to the state for some reason. I've never been there. The only concern I would have living there is the extremes in daylight or lack of it at certain times of the year. Seems like a beautiful state otherwise.

Lots of handguns, shotguns, and long guns...
... and plenty of available ammo.
