multicast (one to many) as opposed to unicast (one to one).

Multicast can be useful for obtain IP addresses from a DHCP server, oh gawd..... ::)

anyway, hope your day improves Faith

I know enough about what you're talking about to remind myself of one thing:

I'm so glad I don't work in IT.

I inherited our network structure .. what a mess. Anyways, multicast never worked. Too many different switches with different configs. Well, I did manage to get it to work across our whole network - including our remote sites. The bad side to that is differing bandwidth. The multicast saturates the trunk lines to the lower bandwidth sites == bad!!!!

Finally I found the working configuration in our mess to have multicast working without trunk saturation. the downside, now it refuses to cross to a different switch even within the same vlan ... which I need it to do. It has to end up at another remote site.

ARRRGGGHHH

bad 2 weeks it what it's been, not one bad day.  I was so happy to have it cast yesterday I thought I had it made .. until today when I set up a new decoder on a different switch.

ARRRGGGHHH some more

Dearest boss people,

Invest in homogenizing the network equipment you've so successfully neglected for so long.  Otherwise I will let this continue to cripple our network.

Kthxbye

XOXO,

The queen of the network.

if only that would work. OMG we have no money for infrastructure improvements. Can't you make it work? Why do we need so many switches? Why do we need to replace them? They are only 15+ years old and they still run.
-=meanwhile=-
We are spending millions (yes, read millions) making our building pretty.

no, let's not get started on my boss/management people.

Oh, HEY, good news. The new decoder doesn't work when connect to the same switch either. grrrr

Well of course, you can add prettiness of the building to the bottom line next quarter.  It's synergistic synergy revenue or something like that (I fell asleep during that particular powerpoint brainwashing session)

I know full well how frustrating it can be to try and dumb down technical stuff to the laypersons in control of the purse strings who get to make decisions on things they have absolutely no clue about.

things are worse than I thought

The 'multicast' works, but only when plugged into a single switchport. So, most likely, none of the join/leave messages are working  *sigh*
