Lap band after srs?
« on: September 17, 2019, 08:00:23 am »
Hey everyone,

I am currently 210lbs and I had my mtf srs back in May. This whole being fat thing isn’t working out.

Has anyone had the lap band done and still on hormones? Or will the hormones make you gain it all back? I’ve been doing low carb which is not hard but I’m stuck and cannot lose anymore. I’m afraid if I just get lipo then it will just come back.

Any thoughts. Xoxo

Please be careful with considering a Lap Band.... I am quite aware that plateaus in a weight loss endeavor can be very frustrating.   It most likely feels that you could starve yourself and still not lose weight.   Persistence, tenacity and fierce determination is needed to continue on with your diet plan, eating balanced portion controlled meals, watching your calorie intake, staying away from "fad" diet plans... and continue with reasonable exercise.

Lap Bands for many are a last resort and may work but unless eating habits are addressed, there can be negative consequences of having a lap band... be sure that you discuss all of these possible negative issues with your doctor.

Years ago I had a good friend I went to college with that was grossly overweight and he got a lap band but continued with his excessive eating habits to the extreme.   He ended up having an issue with herniating his esophagus ... the lap band kept the excess food from entering his stomach and he had to have surgery to repair his lower esophagus and to remove the lap band.

In my personal experience, HRT has not made keeping my weight under control an issue.... like my endo once told me it is what we put in our mouth that makes weight loss an issue.

Regarding your weight loss, I am wishing you well, you can read several members threads here that have successfully reduced their weight from the 200+ pound range down into the 160 to 170 pound range with a combination of diet and exercise.  You might want to check out one of the forums thread by our member @NatalieRene

HUGS and best wishes to you.

I had a Lapland for 10 years and then had it removed. Not on hormones. I lost weight with it,  but gained it all back. I lost weight since and so far so good. I've had some odd complications that required removal. I would think long and hard before getting one and they can be worked around as I found out in gaining it all back.

I am not familiar with the weight loss surgeries. I would more than likely avoid them as I have not needed one.

The primary thing that I changed in my diet in order to lose weight has been to cut sugar out as much as possible. There are some items of food that have sugar in them that you wouldn't think about. I didn't worry about those items. What I cut was pop, candy and snacks. I mixed that with walking and went from the upper 230 pound range to ~162 pounds. I'm still losing weight.

I have had SRS and I'm on HRT. As Danielle has said the best way to not gain weight is to control what you put in your mouth. I know that this is at times difficult but with willpower it is possible.

Willpower isn't enough, IMO. Yes discipline, but dealing with the triggers that cause one to eat poorly/too much is ultimately the goal. White knuckling doesn't last long. Change what you believe.

The point to any diet is eating the right foods a less of them. You will have to make diet change even if you get a lap ban so you might consider the diet before considering a lap ban. I have seen diet TV shows where people have rendered the surgery useless by cheating on their diet and I know an airline plot who had the surgery because he was at risk of losing his Job. After the surgery, the plot lost a good deal of weigh then went off the diet and regained the weigh. Unfortunately there aren't any easy fixes to weigh gain and it probably a good deal more difficult for someone overweight to control their weight than somebody who never gained the weight in the first place.

Avoid any surgeon who indicates surgery is all you need because the follow up is what really makes the surgery work.

i have managed to lose almost 200lbs while on HRT (and post SRS) ... trying to lose more but I have hit a very stubborn plateau... and lots of people are telling me I don't need to lose  more weight... (i would like to lose 20-25 lbs more if safely possible)

At 210lbs, unless you are small, you likely are not overweight enough to have insurance pay for weight loss surgery... You usually have to meet a BMI criterion and if it is under 40 (IIRC) you usually also need to have medical issues caused by being overweight or can be helped by losing a lot of weight such as diabetes.

You are better off losing the weight without surgery if you can. Weight loss through surgery really should be a last resort if all else fails AND you meet the criteria.
