How do I do "@" mentions with users who have spaces in their names?

I can't figure out if there is a way to mention users in a post who have usernames with spaces, like "Northern Star Girl." So for instance, let's say I wanted to "@Northern Star Girl." I noticed that when I try to do that, the link doesn't automatically appear when you post the post, which makes me think that the system doesn't recognize this as a valid user. Similarly, "@Northern_Star_Girl" doesn't work either.
Any thoughts / suggestions?

Are you able to do "mentions" for other members?
Regarding your Question:
The system will stop offering suggestions once you insert a space.... if you do a mention for me you should get "suggestions" BEFORE you enter the space after "Northern"

I've done some research, the ability to do mentions is assigned to the Subscriber groups, and Staff.
