Can You Recommend Transgender Role Models?
« on: May 27, 2020, 12:05:36 pm »
My therapist suggested looking into positive real-life stories or biographies of well-known transgender people could be gender-affirming. Does anyone have any suggestions on good books, movies, documentaries, etc. that fit this category?

I'm most interested in transgender women that transitioned during adulthood, but any suggestion could be useful. Thanks for your help!

Charlie Martin.

She's a racing driver. A full petrol-head. She has some very good videos on YT.

I became aware of her before considering transitioning myself. I believe the fact that she put herself out there influenced me to take the leap. I come from a background of having a lot of "masculine" interests myself (software engineer, trained fixed wing pilot, martial arts, DIY). I support her on Patreon. - E

The trans experience is so broad that I wouldn't know who to recommend. I fall in the middle somewhere. I don't have some of the problems some trans people have. I am married, have kids and lead a humdrum life. For me, Jennifer Finney Boylan has been an example I understand. Even Catelyn Jenner. I've read both their biographies and can relate. So it depends on your experience. I've read biographies of others too though.

Thanks, all! I definitely have been looking at some of the stories here and will continue to do so. I've found what people have written to be helpful and inspiring. I am still looking for maybe some biographies I can open up and dive into. So any suggestions in that vein would be welcome.

Thanks, Ellie for the suggestion on Charlie Martin. I'll definitely check her out on YouTube.

Being one of the older ladies here, my role models are from long ago. Take a look at Lili Elbe and Christine Jorgenson. Both have passed on but, in their day, they were pioneers way back when most people did not know that transexual people even existed.

Totally agree. Charlie is amazing...and fearless! A total adrenaline junkie. The funny thing is that when it's just her talking to the camera, she is generally so chill. But then you see her zipping around in race cars, it's like...wow!

Rakel, I picked up Lili Elba's biography on kindle. That will be perfect! I'm not sure exactly the style, as it sounds like it is maybe letters and notes and her own writing, so maybe more of an autobiography or collection? I'll find out this afternoon. But anyway it sounds great and reviews were all really positive. When I started reading about her I recognized the movie they made a few years ago. I've heard it's not very accurate, but I'm pretty sure it's illegal not to watch the movie after you read the book so I'll check it out too. Christine Jorgensen led me to another book I want to get from the library. Of course, I won't be able to until those open back up. Thanks for the recommendations!

Also, thank you again Ellie and Sarah on the Charlie Martin recommendation! I have checked out some of her videos and am excited to watch everything she has posted. I don't think I can do too much at once. I get emotional digesting some of this thinking about my future and have to pull back to collect myself after a few videos.

Here's a great blog that been going for years and is full of stories of TG folks. I've often used it as a springboard for web searches and other reading.

Yes!

Two brave women who had the courage to do this when being trans was treated like a mental illness or a freak show.

Another lady and one I would like to add is Lynn Conway the one who personally slapped me upside the head with her story.  She was also a pioneer and her story and stuggles truly inspired me that it was a real thing and not just me.  She has a rather huge web site with pages and pages of success stories of mtf success stories.  I think seeing what I think of as "normal" women coming through the process of transition was so important.

There are some horrible things (to me) in adult "porn" that portray a really sad view of mtf people.  It was important for me to see regular people with regular jobs and lives.  And again that we just have this medical problem and can deal with it and find some relief.  I hope that helps.

I kind of feel the same way and then some I won't get into here. I think that there are a lot of us that are in the middle of the bell curve that just want to get along and blend in with whom we are. Instead the popular examples that used inside and outside of the community are towards or at the side of the bell curve. I think this further foments the belief that trans ness is a dysfunction in many. We really don't hear enough from those that live relatively normal lives. That said, I don't see myself as having a medical condition, just another expression of the human condition that is not accepted by most of society. Before medical remediation, in societies where being trans was accepted, people were just authentic, so at least in my mind, it's a social issue primarily. The difference today is that we have medical remediation for this. To put it another way, if being trans was acceptable, meaning we would have been raised in our preferred/true gender, would that change the desire and usage of medical intervention? I would bet so. On the other hand, it's nice to have choices no matter what.

Thank you Lyric, Jane, and Gertrude! I've added some new bookmarks for the Gender Variance blog and Lynn Conway's site. I now have more reading and watching and surfing than I know what to do with.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed! I'm not sure how much more I can take on, but if people had other ideas I'm sure they could be interesting to myself or others in the future.

Really, really read “The Secrets of my Life,” by Caitlyn Jenner.

Say what you will about her, other than having been an Olympic medalist, TV actor and pitch man, and reality star, her story reads like any of ours, replete with lots of stories of hotel cross dressing, hiding clothing stashes from wives and children, failed attempts at transition before society was ready, and coming out of the closet to family.

Lynn Conway did it both ways.  She had a pretty horrible time getting hormones and srs and then when the folks at IBM found out lost her job and had to do grunt work software to pay the bills.  She did the whole meet Mr Right and have a house and a home and just did amazing things in Computer design.  And really just kept her head down about how it was that she was a women.  Well I think she saw some of the grief people were going through and remembered her own problems getting help to transition she came out in the public light and did a pretty extensive bunch of web pages that told her story and lifted up some of the women she knew that were successful women living in pretty normal lives.  Low on the drama.  This to me was where the fears of being the center of a freak show ended.  Its not.  As to medical and being raised the gender your wired?  It might just be me but my issue is a lot about physical dysphoria.  I guess this is why the medical options appeal to me.  My boy parts have always revolted me.

Being a super fem runway model isin't really that appealing (Even if I could pull that off which... I can't)  I would be wildly happy to be more closer to the tomboy side.  Not too masculine but not too fem either.  Just kind of plain Jane.  :D

^^^ this is EXACTLY how I feel as well. And when it comes to transgender role models, I feel like I am in the minority. I know that dressing up is something a lot of trans women look forward to, but I am in jeans and t-shirt most days. I do wonder sometimes as I get farther into transition whether I will feel more social pressure from cis women to “get my act together” when it come to presenting myself.

Sarah, I'm the same way. I once had a neighbor tell me that I look like a street person*, but I think I'm cute in my understated way. I wear olive and black and brown because I'm an earthy girl and cotton 99% of the time because I crave comfort.

*I was gardening that day, as I am nearly every warm day, and wearing my torn and stained gardening clothes.

I enjoy dressing up, but most of the time, exactly the same thing applies to me. I also would never wish to become a model even if I did have the right looks. Femininity is a scale, after all. - E
