When to expect some muscle mass loss

I was curious when some of you started seeing (upper mostly) muscle mass loss.   I have always been one of those types that was extremely muscular no matter what I ate or how often I exercised.  Even after almost a year of HRT, I could probably still throw a car on it's side.  Not exactly ladylike  Hahah.   

I do still have some gut fat (grrr yummy things), but most of what's left is the muscle mass.  I can still feel the old 6 pack underneath plain as day.  My arm and leg muscles are quite defined so it's easy to see.  203 lbs as of today.   

I got lucky in a way that my face will probably never need FFS, but there is no hiding this massive frame.  I just keep hoping it will change some eventually.  It's quite the shocking difference.  Even my neck is still thick from muscle.  Is that one of those things that takes years?  I know bone structure isn't going to change any, but that's ok, I was a wiry looking 20 somethings kid (makes me feel somewhat better remembering that).  I just had a few years as a body builder and it seemed I had a natural knack for it.    Here's hoping I don't completely keep that guy's build.  :(

I changed my hormones 3 years ago.  I have lost quite a bit of my muscle functionality that I had under T however there has not been that much shrinkage of the muscles.  My neck has shrunk some in circumference, about 1.25 inches, which is nice.  The rest of my body things look to be very close in actual measurements, but the muscles are far less defined.  While I am still on the more muscular side of femininity, it is on the fem side.  I'd like more to go away, especially on my arms which are the exact same measurements as when I started.  The thing for me is that I have never stopped doing the things that have mostly shaped my muscles.  I've got a house and a yard that has lots of work to be done on it and I am the main one responsible for it.  Thus unless I win the lotto, I'll keep doing it all, and most likely will keep much of my muscles.

I am 32 months on HRT.  While never particularly muscular, I did start to see a reduction of my arm and shoulder muscles after a year or so that has continued.  My strength in lifting is less than it was before, but this also could be do to aging.  It has definitely helped with a more feminine appearance to my upper body, even though at times I am very self-conscious about my back and shoulders. I think one year is way to early to see all the results of HRT, more like three to five years. One day you will look in the mirror and realize that all that male brawn is gone!

It took years under the influence of Testosterone to build those muscles and it will take years to undo that muscle mass. Three to five years is about right and is similar to my experience. Don't forget diet and aerobic exercise. You can put away those barbells.  :laugh:

Thanks. That actually makes me feel a lot better about it.  I was getting worried there.  I was hoping it was one of those "takes a long time" things.

It seems as if the muscles do decline, unless you choose to exercise them.
But that appears to be true with or without HRT.

What I find fascinating is that women are “so soft” and you with Mtf HRT get that same softness.
Not sure if that is simply because of added fat or loss of muscle, or both, but this softness is for sure just like female softness.  I am not sure if that makes any sense, but there is a real, not an imagined skin softness.  It is wonderful.

I'm running off overall fat.  Not eating bad.  Progress has been  s l o w.  Still only one year HRT so will continue if I want results.

Strengthening lower body exercises.
Avoiding upper body tasks or trying to do them differently.  Some high reps with minimal or no weight upper body stuff.
I tend to weigh 15lbs more than others of same height and size.  If it's inside my bones I'm grateful
Trying not to compare too much.

Keep on Julielynn beautiful lady.  I use BB cream because you me mentiined it once in a post.

I went on a diet immediately upon starting HRT 22 months ago and i’m still on it. I started exercising regularly doing a lot of cardio and racquetball which actually keeps everything pretty well toned. With Covid my gym is closed but I have reverted to walking long distances daily. I have lost a lot of weight both fat and muscle but my strength has maybe dropped 25% over the last few years. I believe I have an athletic build for a female now and my BMI is 24.75 which is on the high end of ‘Normal Range’. I want to become slightly smaller overall but when I drop even a measly 5lbs more, my wife says I look more masculine in the face.😕

It may help to change how you do things.  Suppose you had to move a lot of books.  Instead of using boxes to move as many as you can at once, move a smaller number at a time.  Use the extra time to plan and organize.  ;D

I’ve had the same problem, before coming out as transgender I had been bodybuilding for years so started my journey with a lot of muscle mass. Here are the tips I’ve found for losing muscle.

1) This probably goes without saying, but start with cut out all resistance/weight training. Even training lower body will help maintain upper body muscle.
2) Reduce the protein in your diet. Your body needs protein to build and maintain muscle, so by cutting it your body won’t be able to maintain as muscle muscle mass
3) Time, it takes along time to build muscle and a long time to lose muscle, this will likely be a multi-year journey.

Ok good to know.  I thought I was doing good to work the lower body, thinking it would keep my bottom big and strong and slowly melt away the top.  From what you say in (1), that is not true.

I don't want to lose muscle, even though I accept that there's likely to be some loss with HRT, and I'm actively taking steps to avoid it. I'm actually stronger than I've ever been now because I can do three pullups.

The other thing with muscle is it helps keep your weight down because it burns more energy than body fat does.

Still waiting on that. lol. 20 months in & I still have a relatively burly upper body for a woman, my most masculine characteristic.

I have noticed that my shoulders have become a bit more rounded, though. I'd say I first noticed that about 4 months ago, but by then the difference was pretty pronounced.

I don't think you are odd at all. I am non-binary, so that may have something to do with it. I have a large property with several animals and fences. I look forward to some body changes, but too much muscle loss would make it harder to upkeep. We all have our own individual reasons for the path we are on.

Yes, I guess that could be the case; I'm certainly an ectomorph! And I do not consider myself to be "strong" strong. I already have a reasonable figure and many ciswomen tell me they would love to be able to wear the clothes that I can get into.

For what it's worth, I'm aware that gender is a spectrum, and I think I'm close to the non-binary end of the feminine side. That probably also plays a part.

Hi,

I am not a doctor and this is not dietary advise but my thoughts. Consult your doctor.

You may want to make sure your T is in the appropriate level. T helps maintain muscle.

If you like working out then light weight and much more reps. Instead of reverse pyramids do 30 reps three times with light weight. Stomach work and leg work are my favorite followed by flies and military press.  Bi's and tri's are divine. Squats and presses are amazing!!

I eat keto with 18/6 time restricted feeding and last calories 3 hours before bedtime.  When you sleep it released HGH. HGH with hormones and low insulin and you get fat loss and lean muscle retention ( HGH and hormones are magic). I am thin and have lean muscle. I have not been in my gym (use to be there 4 days a week) since March due to Covid. The gym opened in mid July but I am not going there till after October and I see the infection rates in the city and or my results get released from a serology study I am participating in.

When you eat hi GI foods it produces insulin which transports glucose into the fat cells. You convert protein to glucose and fat becomes triglyceride. If I wanted to eliminate my muscle I would keep insulin in my system by eating high glycymic foods for long stretches in a day. You do not need to eat huge calories of the foods but enough to release insulin above 105. I absolutely do not recommend eating this way as it is not good for your long term health. 1 hour after I eat my glucose is 92. You could achieve this by eating high glycymic foods ( fruit) throughout the day. The name for this way of eating is the SAD diet, Standard American Diet.

Lean muscle is beautiful.

I have been on HRT for about 19 months and have been doing pole fitness for 7 years I wouldn't say I have lost that much strength, muscle or weight until covid

I started HRT weighing 11st 4lb's also starting a cholesterol lowing diet and dropped to 10st 8lb but since covid lockdown this has crept back up to 11st 4lb

I would rather have a little bit of muscle on my arms than wings underneath, i'm not 100% sure but I think I might look a little less bulky up top and am hoping to be wearing strappy tops soon but I guess time will tell
