I have to say i’m not buying into the panic. If you look at how many people are dying every year - from flu, from cancer, from accidents then the Covid numbers get perspective. We’re so focused on this yet the number of cancer referrals has gone down by 80% in some cases - that’s going to cause so many deaths

Well... no one says you have to buy into anything. But I would do the math. When I was still quite young the country was up in arms because of the Vietnam war dead. From wikipedia its says that 47,424 US soldiers died in the war. Before that in the Korean War 33.686 Soldiers lost their lives. Going back to WWII 291,557 Soldiers died and in WWI 53,402 died. If you go back further to the Civil War the Union Army lost 140,000 and the Confederacy 94,000. Add all these together and you don't reach the current number of people who had died from Covid19 and I think some countries like China are simply not reporting anything so that a panic is avoided or blame is assigned.
If you just take the US Covid deaths you can add up the dead from 2 Vietnam wars and 3 Korean war dead and Covid still outkills and this is just in the USA alone in the span of the last 181 days. Should people Panic? I'm not sure why that comes up because rushing around screaming probably just makes it worse but its difficult for me to see it as no worse then the common flu. You can get innoculation for the flu which many people blow ff and I think last year it was somewhere near 34,000 people died. Nothing can be taken to make you immune from Covid19 so the best any of us can do is recognize its serious. Its killing a lot of people in a very short span of time and ignoring doing what we can to slow the spread is the best we can do. I think the worst thing we can do is ignore it or pretend its not serious and end up spreading if faster.
Here is a good visual on how fast Covid spreads versus the common flu and why this is a very poor argument.
https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/01/health/flu-vs-coronavirus-deaths/index.htmlCan't say much about deaths versus cancer deaths because I don't know those numbers.
However... I've had Cancer so maybe my experience will help explain why I think its important to take Covid19 seriously. If I had ignored it I would be (without question) dead. It was even suggested to me by cancer doctors that I should consider ignoring it because some strains were slow growing. They called it "Watchful waiting" Unfortunately for my uncles, and father who went that route we ALL got the bad kind that killed two of them horribly and quite fast indeed. My other uncle took some action (late) and was able to die slower after undergoing castration and cross hormone therapy to slow its spread. I was informed by the surgeon mine was removed at the very last minute because it was about to burst open and spread into everything. I had to press hard to get treatment so my experience is that its wise to take deadly things like cancer, covid19 and yes eveb the flu seriously.
The Darwin Awards for people who die of Covid or have damaged hearts lungs or brains from it will be a long list because I think we have a mindset that its more important to be concerned about panic then taking rational steps to keep ourselves safe from what ails us.
I'll end my rant by saying all of us have to be proactive about our health care and please wear a mask even if you don't "believe" in Covid19. Some of us do and think its impolite to have you cough up death by strangling on our own fluids.
