Been watching a whole lot of movies in this Covid era. Was discussing this with friends, what are your favorite great movies with not a happy ending.

I don’t know if any mob or gangster movie can have a happy ending, i.e, Godfather, Casino, Goodfellas.....ok maybe Untouchables 😹

Here are some of mine:

Million Dollar Baby
Titanic, the ship still sinks
The Green Mile
Gallipoli, can a war movie have a happy ending?!
No Country for Old Men

What are some of yours?

Hugs,

Holly the movie critic

Brokeback Mountain
Life is Beautiful
The English Patient
Parasite

Bonnie and Clyde (1967) comes to mind.

Could I offer Thelma & Louise (1991) to this list?
and the first movie ever to make me cry, King Kong (the original '30s one)  (he dies in the end... it is really sad!)....

Let's talk about Citizen Kane.

All the things that money could buy and he was still not happy. This is very sad. At the end, all he could say was Rosebud.

Orson Welles is a cinematic genius.

Pink Floyd's The Wall

Starts p miserable, and the middle part takes it steep downhill from there, but oh, that ending... dayum!

Good ones so far - here are some more:

Crouching Tiger
Butch Cassidy
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Do The Right Thing
Braveheart
The Departed (probably more than any other Scorsese movie, this is really depressing and cynical at the end)
The Revenant
Dr. Strangelove

And if you want to watch one of the most twisted "happy endings" to a movie, watch The Player.

Dear Sarah:
Valkyrie (2008) is another movie about totalitarian regimes that has a BAD Ending.

Dear Sarah:
Thank you for your way-too-kind complement regarding my current Avatar/Profile photo.
My hair is windblown and a mess... and out of control and I do not have any makeup on.

Regarding the movie  Valkarie  ... it is a good movie if you like WW2 stuff...
...Tom Cruise is not my favorite actor but he did a great job on this movie.
I am sure that you can see it on NetFlix or Amazon Prime.

Again, thank you for reply and your nice words...
HUGS,
Danielle

I agree with Danielle, Caela; you look stunning in your avatar too - every pixel a perfect woman. Your glasses suit you so well too...  (and BTW, thanks for your nice comments about me!  ;D )..

Another dystopian film with a very sad ending..

Brazil (1985) Terry Gilliam’s masterpiece...

It originally ended with Sam and Jill destroying the ministry and travelling off into the sunset...
If the studio had its way, this would have been the ending, but Gilliam fought tooth and nail to make sure his original ending remained. In the director’s cut, the film cuts back to the Ministry to reveal that Sam is still strapped to a chair — the happy ending has all been a product of Sam’s imagination.

Another one is "Avengers: Infinity War"- (yes I know it's only half the story, with the rest in "Avengers: Endgame" but snapping half of life out of existence is pretty bleak.)

Sarah and Danielle- Thank you both very much for your kind words. ;D

My apologies if this is a bit too much 'tongue-in-cheek,' but when I saw the subject line for this,my first thought was:

 - Monty Python and the Holy Grail

(King Arthur's quest for one of the most sacred relics ends up with his getting arrested by the police.)

It took over 40 years to realise, and believe, that what I am NOT, is a mistake.

(Yes, I'm a Canadian who served in the US Navy....)

If we forget the tacked on "happy" codas as their last scenes, both "Star Trek II- The Wrath of Khan" and "The Empire Strikes Back" are rather dark at the end.
