Trans people who also have Autism/Asperger's?
« on: November 10, 2020, 02:29:32 pm »
Hi everyone. I am a transgender female who has Asperger's. I was diagnosed when I was about 16 years old. I am wondering if anyone else here is on this spectrum as well? In my experience it's very difficult to be both autistic and transgender.
Anyone who wants to add to this discussion is welcome to do so. :-)

This question comes up from time to time and there seems to be some crossover. Yes. I have it mildly. I have 5 kids and one has autism and another has Aspergers. I think it's genetic. It seems to run in both my wife's and my family

Hi there, I'm also a Transgender Aspie Woman. I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my late 40's. Back when I was growing up, such things as Asperger's, and Transgender, weren't disussed, and every harsh measure that could be used to force someone to conform was used. I learned and survived, a rage filled train wreck, until I finally broke. The only plus was, being a woman, closeted or not, I raised my kids as a second mother, cared for my family as would a housewife, and listened to my spouse as would a girlfriend. So, when I tried to end my life, they wouldn't let me go. When I transitioned, they accepted me and loved me just as hard. Autism is hard. Missing so much, but it has benefits as well. My family is used to my wiring differences, and have learned how to communicate with me. It's not perfect, but then nothing is. I'd love to hear about you, if you choose.
Sincerely,
Amber Marie Grey

My therapist suggested that I was on the autism spectrum.  She said that there seems to be an overlap in quite a few transgender people with some form of autism.  After doing some research on the subject, I see her point.  The term can often be misunderstood, people thing of the type portrayed in the popular film "Rainman."  A new term is coming into use is "neurodiversity."  I like it.
I first told a psychiatrist that I wanted to be a girl 1967 after a psychotic breakdown
Began therapy again with gender specialist 50 years later in September 2017
Began HRT November 2017
Name change with Israel Ministry of Interior March 2018
FFS September 2018
GCS December 2018
Gender change with Israel Ministry of Interior January 2019
BA July 2020

I am a trans male and I was diagnosed with Asperger's as a kid in 2006. If I remember correctly, I think the autistic population has a higher percentage of trans folk compared to neurotypical individuals. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, however.

My wife thinks I am "on the spectrum".  I don't think she is wrong, but I have never been diagnosed.

Well I'm autistic and trans. I think I once heard at least 30% of the trans community are autistic, but I could be very wrong
