If you like the Drop Kick Murphy's you should check a Canadian group known
As the Dreadnoughts, they're roots are mostly in Celtic Punk heavily influenced by The Pogues and Stan Rogers, they also dabble in eastern/northern European styles, such as polka,

They're Album Polkas Not Dead is wild. I discovered it during a bad acid trip at a festival, I decided to listen to my headphones to distract myself and remember I wanted to listen to that album. I literally fell in love with it. I just listened to it on repeat for hours, such a wild head trip.

The Dreadnoughts.

I've been a Punk/Hardcore fan since '92. I got into Black Flag, Minor Threat, and, Dead Kennedys around the same time. If I would have to pick a favorite scene it would be Japan. There have been so many great bands from there. Gauze, Outo, S.O.B., Disclose, Beyond Description, and, Yellow Machine Gun, just to name a few.

This ain't a song for the broken-hearted
No silent prayer for the faith-departed
I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
You're gonna hear my voice
When I shout it out loud
It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
It's my life

I love The Orwells.  The band may have had some terrible human beings in it, but the music they made is darn good.

You didn’t mention the Clash.  I think of them as punk.

Was Eve 6 punk?

We’re the Pixies?

These are all good bands.  At some point, I am not sure how to categorize groups.  I think they are all arguably punk.

Yeah, punk is an attitude, I mean there is some hiphop/rap music that's 100% punk,
But I my comment was mostly to spread word of The Dreadnoughts (new album march 12th)
By comparing them to drop kick Murphies, no need to mention the clash.

Depends on the band, I'm not into the pistols but I quite like some similar london groups that were around at that time. The Clash are one of my favourites, as are The Stangers but I find it difficult to class either of them as punk, same with Television, first time I heard Marquee Moon blew my mind, its like prog punk, super simple but deep and evolving, love it. I guess I'm more into the post punk/new wave stuff but nothing beats classic raw punk after a bad day.

I just want to say thanks for this thread -- there are a lot of bands on here that I really dig, and there are others that I have not yet been introduced to.  I absolutely LOVE it when I get to try out a new band that I might really get into.  It's like Christmas morning!

Thanks to all!

I've just made an overall Top 10 album list and The Bollocks made it in there (not sure on ranking yet).  it is such a masterpiece for the time, I can't see any punk that comes close to that kind of attitude, production and style.  Goodness knows how it must've felt hearing it for the first time way way back in 1977.  Perfection.

Were The Orwell’s punk?  I would say so.  Disgraceland was pretty awesome.  Maybe top 10.

Was Green Day?  Supposedly, so I guess.  Maybe some sub genre of punk?  I really liked Dookie and American Idiot.

How about Doolittle by the Pixies?

Well it's been knocked out of my 10 on a final showing but it should deserve an honorary mention I guess.

Somewhat late jumping onto this thread....whatever.

The first time I heard punk was 1977.  I was at the local college radio station....my usual campus hangout.  I plunked an LP onto the turntable from an unknown NYC band called The Ramones.  They quite literally changed my life in 30 seconds.  Several loud "holy s**ts" could be heard by anyone within 30 feet of the music library.

I was into prog rock before that.  Well, as they say, out with the old and in with the new....

Hundreds of new titles were arriving at the station every week.  Punk and New Wave were exploding despite getting almost zero airplay on mainstream radio.  It was hard to keep up.  I dove headfirst into the punk and hardcore scene.  Went to shows almost every week.  I lost count of how many I attended in the early 90's.

Those early years in radio were the catalyst for a lifetime of musical discovery that continues to this day.  I like or at least appreciate the vast majority of music I hear.  It's easier to list the artists/genres that don't resonate.  I couldn't possibly list the thousands of artists I've enjoyed over the years.

Off the top of my head, some of the early punk/hardcore bands I listened to....

Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, Television, Patti Smith, Buzzcocks, X-Ray Spex, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Fear, The Jam, X, The Cramps, Bad Brains, Generation X, 999, The Saints, 7 Seconds, Minutemen, Circle Jerks, The Vandals, Minor Threat, Volcano Suns, Youth Brigade, UK Subs, Descendants, Lime Spiders, Suicidal Tendencies, The Stooges, The Gun Club, Crass, Dead Boys, The Germs, Husker Du, Bad Religion, Mission of Burma....

And some of the early bands that had a punk/hardcore ethos or formed in more recent years and became part of the post-punk/post-hardcore/grunge/shoegaze/emo scenes....

Gang of Four, Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Fugazi, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Speedy Ortiz, Hole, Mudhoney, The Melvins, Cracker, Drive Like Jehu, A-Miniature, Swervedriver, Wipers, Dream Syndicate, Idles, Band of Skulls, Fontaines DC, Ministry, Screaming Trees, Rocket From the Crypt, Queens of the Stone Age, Janes Addiction, Butthole Surfers, Shame, Dinosaur Jr, Superchunk, The Donnas, Hot Snakes, Bikini Kill, The Raveonettes, The Stone Roses, The Vega Bodegas, Ty Segall, Beastie Boys, TV Priest, Celibate Rifles, Rage Against the Machine....

I could go on....

Emily Alt,

Love & Rockets?  They might have been punk.

But, was Cracker?  I love Cracker, but it seems more … popish?  More mainstream?

Anyway, if you like all of that, you’d probably like The Orwells.  Check them out.

I would put Love & Rockets in that 2nd group....with Cracker.  Bands there weren't necessarily considered punk.  But their music may have had strong punk leanings or been influenced by punk or maybe they played straight up punk on a few songs.  Plenty of Cracker shows have mosh pits.  They know how to play loud, hard, and fast.  They also play a lot of blues and country in their live shows.  But there's often a punk influence even on those songs.

Some other bands I put in that 2nd group, Idles for example, would be considered punk or post-punk by most learned listeners.  But Idles would vehemently disagree.  If you listen to some of their b-sides, you'll hear some mellow stuff.  Even then you can't deny the raw power and angst in Joe Talbot's voice.

Yeah I know the Orwells.  I think I first heard them around 10 years ago.  Like their music and won't buy it.  2 of their albums pretty much sum up who they are as people....Disgraceland and Terrible Human Beings....

Good discussion going on here.....

Hey Sara just a suggestion.  Check out KEXP.org.  It's a professionally run indie station in Seattle.  The DJ's are extremely knowledgeable.  You never know what you'll hear.  They play almost every genre of music you can think of.  Every show has a heavy dose of new music.  If you want to hear lots of punk, check out their Sonic Reducer show Saturday at 9 PM Pacific.  They have a 2 week archive of shows if you want to catch up on anything you missed.  I listen to the station every day.  It's way better than Pandora, Spotify, Sirius, etc.
