How Y’all, Youse and You Guys Talk

Stumbled across this earlier today. Article is from 2013, but the engine still works if the link opens up for you.

It tries to locate your US regional accent(s) based on particular words you use and your pronunciation of others.

Based on your answers, the test engine draws a heat map of your accent and finds what it thinks are the three US cities that best represent you. The quiz selects 25 questions from a larger pool each time, so you should take it a few times to see how reliably it works for you.

I ran it a few times. Here's what I got:

- A narrow axis running from Kansas City through Tulsa, petering out by the time it got to Dallas

- A broad axis down the Mississippi from Chicago to Jackson, narrowing into New Orleans

- A swatch along the coastal Carolinas

This was... quite accurate considering where I grew up and where my parents and grandparents grew up.

How about you?

What does the way you speak say about where you’re from? Answer all the questions below to see your personal dialect map.

"It's not really a choice. Because we're not choosing to transition...we're choosing to be happy." -- SarahC

"Freedom comes at a high price. But I have paid that price, and I am free." -- Muhammad Ali

"Have a gentle manner ❤️" -- Chrissy Ryan
"Working on it" -- Battle Goddess

"When going through hell, best keep moving." -- Old & KIA

“Darling,” She said, “it doesn’t matter. You have only one choice. You can walk farther along the path or not. It is a narrow path. You may be scared about lifting your foot up to take your next step. It doesn’t matter. You don’t have to step very far. It’s up to you.
"But all you get to do is choose. Your anxieties, your fears, your courage, your happiness, your rage: go ahead and feel them all you want. They don’t matter. What matters is what you choose.
“I can promise you a long and fascinating road. I’ll give you tools along the way. I’ll be with you every step.
“Now make your choice.” --  my beloved Battle Goddess

It nailed me as being from Alabama.  Perhaps a little over specific as it suggested the three biggest cities in the state, and I don't live in a big city.   Other than that, I'd say it was dead on right.

The quiz/test pegged me perfectly as an Alaskan and/or Pacific Northwest girl.

It pegged me from Boston because I use "rotary", and either Worcester or Providence because of "bubbler".

Although now that I'm in the UK I say roundabout, and instead of getting off the highway at an exit, I  leave the motorway at a junction. Brilliant, innit?  :D

Sorry, this did not profile me at all.

I got a nice even yellow/red all over the US and where I live now is colored blue. Probably because I have been somewhat nomadic all my life and I just have not picked up the local lingo yet.
