A recent page in the webcomic Assigned Male, written by Sophie LaBelle, discusses the role of society's definitions in the definitions of cis and trans and ends with the line:

If you're trans in a forest, and there's nobody around, are you still even trans?

(I won't quote the whole thing, as I think that would go well beyond "fair use.")
