As stupid from a health perspective as it seems, some people do this just to win.
Before an organization’s weight loss competition, designed to improve overall health, some people load up on the food and calories to increase their weight as much as they can so as, in their minds, to be able to lose more weight than their “competitors” in this health challenge.
While “winning health wise” by losing pounds can have some merit, this gaining to lose more practice seems to be against the spirit of the competition and could be unhealthy.
Have you seen this done?
ChrissyRyan:
Silliness indeed.
All for “winning.”
Maid Marion:
I think that doing that results in sagging skin that makes you look bad. The skin has to grow to fit the extra weight. Then when you lose the weight you have too much!
Sephirah:
Wait, this is actually a thing? Like competitive weight loss? I mean I know about competitive eating but I had no idea the reverse was true.
That's kind of... a bad idea from the start. When you turn something into a competition to try and get one over on other people, you will always get people who try and cheese the system in order to win. Regardless. Competitiveness breeds that competitive mindset of winning at any cost. Because for some people, being better than everyone else is superficially more rewarding than being better than they thought they could be.
I'm not sure it's a good idea in general to promote an atmosphere of "Do something because you want to be better than someone else at it." Especially when it comes to personal goals. I rather think it's more helpful to encourage people to lose weight because it's in their own best interests rather than because they'll win some kind of accolade if they achieve more of it than others trying to do the same thing. Everyone needs their own individual weight loss plan based on their own needs and circumstances. Trying to make it into some kind of standardised competition is the thing which seems a little bit silly, and possibly dangerous.
