In the states, kindness to pedestrians depends upon how far you are from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. If you're far east or far west, many drivers are pedestrian-protective. Go inland and go afoot and you better be fleet.

I live in Miami and the drivers here are terrible. Too many of them demand the right of way and all too often the local news media report of a pedestrian or bicyclist being killed by careless hit and run drivers.

Saddly, being close to a coast, east or west, is no guarantee of safety.

   I was always taught to look both ways before crossing the street. Many from the city (NY) will put their nose up in the air and dare the driver to hit them, unfortunately this mentality doesn't fare well for the pedestrian if the driver is not paying attention to the road. Another unfortunate thing is many stand on the corner next to the crosswalk waiting for the bus. Wanting to be polite one should stop and let the pedestrian cross but they are just standing there waiting, makes for a dangerous situation if they should step out and try to cross.

As a funny note, I had a terrible time teaching my horse to walk over those Zebra stripes.

Dear Gina:
Growing up in Eastern Montana at my parent's ranch, I rode horses all around the country roads there and some of the roads did not have real and actual "cattle guards" or "cattle grids" on some of the roads, INSTEAD they experimented successfully with "painted on" cattle grids which did a great job of fooling the cattle and keeping them from crossing onto the road.... 

....I was able to teach my horse to ignore the painted cattle guards but he did know the difference and stayed far away from the real cattle guards......   horses are smarter than cows for sure.
