Autism and Trans: What's the Correlation?

Story by Lisa Lightner

People who do not identify with the sex they were assigned at birth are three to six times as likely to be autistic as cisgender people are, according to the largest study yet to examine the connection. Gender-diverse people are also more likely to report autism traits and to suspect they have undiagnosed autism.

Researchers often use ‘gender diverse’ as an umbrella term to describe people whose gender identities — such as transgender, nonbinary, or gender-queer — differ from the sex they were assigned at birth. Cisgender, or cis, refers to people whose gender identity and assigned sex match.

The results come from an analysis of five unrelated databases, including information about autism, mental health, and gender.

“All these findings across different datasets tend to tell a similar story,” says study investigator Varun Warrier, a research associate at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

Autistic people are more likely than neurotypical people to be gender diverse, several studies show, and gender-diverse people are more likely to have autism than cisgender people.

This is one of those case studies that is easy to misconstrue. For, it may be more likely for someone with autism to be gender questioning.. but that does not mean it is more likely for gender questioning people to be autistic... case of statistics telling you what you want.

As a Transgender woman who has a son that has Asperger's. I learned that I also exhibit some of the traits, though not officially diagnosed. As with gender, Autism has a diverse spectrum of intensities or symptoms. It's not a you have it or not condition. Asperger's is at the mild end. Interesting study. Thanks Jessica.
