Finding the right style of fashion
« on: February 25, 2023, 09:37:08 am »
I came out a year ago, and had been building up a wardrobe of the basics, shirts, a couple solid color cardigans, bras, leggings and jeggings etc,

The last handful of months I’ve realized I really like soft girl aesthetic fashion, e girl, and Barbie core style of clothing. I’ve been building up a wardrobe filled with tons of pink and purples, butterflies and heart patterns, overalls in the colors of pink and blue, and a strawberry dress inspired. A lot of it Is inspired by the juniors section and i find it in a larger adult size. I just got a pink velvet heart patterned tracksuit this month.

The thing is I feel weird sometimes that what I like dressing in is this cute or wholesome fashion,  that is advertised for early teens and some late teens. I’m in pink overalls or heart pattens and my friends right next to me are in crop tops and tight, sexy outfits, (average college age clothes). I don’t drink or smoke either like 90% of campus who  do 1 or both due to meds I take. So I always feel awkward I’m the same age as ppl but feel like I look younger due to what I wear and not drinking.

I was wondering 2 things.
Is this fashion too childish?
Also do you think I dress this way as I like it or as it’s a style I couldn’t wear a kid in the closet, so I’m making up for lost time, both or neither? As I’m not sure.

Ps, I do wear some tighter clothes such as leggings and tapered sweatpants as my major is exercise science and some classes require we dress to be able to move around.

Dear Natalie:
Based on your environment, where you are, and what your female friends about your age are wearing, YOU have to be the judge as to what styles of clothing are appropriate for you.

Personally, I like the snug fitting and shape clinging clothes for my personal times away from work.
I live a very active lifestyle... exercising, hiking, skiing, frequent gym visits, etc.

I own and operate my own financial advising and CPA business, so in my work environment I need
to dress respectfully and conservatively.... by definition that means NO excessive skin-baring fashions
such as crop tops, short skirts, short shorts, an "painted on" super tight clothing at work.

Again, you are the one that knows what your friends wear and what your environment is.... you have
to be the judge.
My feeling is that since you came out a year ago and may or may not be Full Time yet, you might
want to ease into the women's fashions and clothing.
HUGS,
Danielle

Some people like to think we should 'dress your age'. Well, I transitioned five years ago, so I'm five years old. I'm 6' 1", 168lb, and wear size 13 shoes. I really don't think there are any kid's clothes which will fit. I do tend to dress young, but that's what I prefer. I missed out on so many years of fashions that I feel I have the right to wear whatever I want. I do realize some things I like are totally inappropriate, so I do avoid those.

Society pressured us to 'fit in' to a box which we loathed. Once you free yourself, don't let others put you into a different box. Wear what you like, be yourself, enjoy your freedom.

Love always -- Jessica Rose

I meant I’ve been fully out for 1 year, I’ve been out to some ppl for close to 3 years. So I do full time wear woman’s clothes.  For the gym or certain exercise science classes in college I’ll be in leggings and tighter fitting clothes, at least for bottoms.
Work I dress appropriately like you said.

I just mean any other time.
I know my environment, I just personally dislike crop tops and other revealing clothes on me, idk why.  I own 1 crop top hoodie that I only wear as the pants that go with it are very high waisted so I don’t show much skin.

It makes it harder that I feel weird wearing average college girl outfits and not in what I wear.

One option is layering.  I'll wear crop sweaters over other clothes in the winter.  And maybe a thin cardigan over the sweater!

I don’t fit in the juniors section, I find what I like there and search google until I find random websites in the corner of internet with these items in adult sizes. I’m 6 foot 4 inches so I feel your pain.

I’ll do try to wear what I like and avoid being put in a box with fashion as I don’t like it, as you mentioned.

It’s more that I just feel weird that I dress in a way that isn’t a typical college girl and maybe younger(idk if that’s accurate though)

I dress 20-30 years younger than my age (then I am ancient), and I feel great, style is very personal and as long as it is appropriate for the situation, and then anything goes. I do not follow the trends, I am me and you should be you. As said, you are the only judge of what you want to wear. I think too many just follow the crowd.

I May give that a try, as it helps with feeling awkward showing off more skin.
It just doesn’t help with the fact my style is soft girl aesthetic fashion, e girl, and Barbie core style of clothing or athletic(hoodie and leggings)

I love your idea it just feels really mature and not bright pink and purple or anything. Like even one of my mature sweaters is a pink fuzzy one.

That’s the issue I just feel weird dressed in some mature outfits  or revealing college outfits.

I am 59, teaching in a university here. I sometimes wear looking younger than students.

If you like it, you may go your own way, ignoring comments from others, as I do.
