Florida lawmakers have passed a new bill that excludes trans people from toilets that align with their gender and would legally force them to leave a single-sex space if asked to do so by another person.
On Wednesday (4 May), the Florida senate passed HB 1521 – known as the Facility Requirements Based on Sex bill – which would make it a misdemeanour trespassing offence for someone to use toilets that don’t align with their biological sex.
HB 1521 states there will be “exclusive use of restrooms by gender”, and “exclusive use of changing facilities” and if someone asks a trans person to leave, they must “immediately depart”.
The bill is headed to Florida governor Ron DeSantis’ desk and he is expected to sign it into law.
Democratic state representative Kelly Skidmore criticised her Republican colleagues’ actions. “You have no idea what you’re doing here because you can’t think past your hatred, and you can’t think past your discrimination,” she said.
On the same day HB 1521 was voted through, DeSantis’ Don’t Say Gay bill, also known as The Parental Rights in Education Act, was expanded.

I have family in Florida and used to visit them annually. Even without this connection, I think a lot about Florida's new bathroom law. Two things:
1. Once again, there's a bathroom issue in the South. As the South once humiliated its black citizens with separate bathrooms, it's using bathrooms to not just humiliate its citizens, but endanger them.
2. Florida has liberal gun laws and Stand Your Ground law. If I were to use the required men's bathroom, I would be afraid. Would the Stand Your Ground law permit me to defend myself?

I am just waiting for cis women to be accosted and accused of 'being a man' and asked to leave the bathroom.. It will happen and it will not get reported. Meanwhile the majority of transgender females will go about their business unchallenged and so legally in the clear. Toothless law designed to appease a hateful minority into voting.

I too have family in Florida and I doubt I will be able to visit anymore. Is Georgia better? Could meet up in Atlanta with all family.

I doubt it, next law will be to ban guns for transgender women on grounds of mental health issues

Floridas new anti trans laws require people to use bathrooms indicated by their birth gender and genes. So locals need to report everybody who uses the public bathrooms and demand gene testing as required by the new law. Gene testing is expensive, and will show that many people unknowingly have more complex genetic structure that the GOP has anticipated, and these will challenge the practicality of these laws, forcing them to be abandoned. Use their stupidity against them!
