Thirty scholarships were awarded this week to outstanding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students by the Point Foundation.

The students were chosen from among more than 1,300 who applied, foundation officials said in a written statement Wednesday. The average award is $12,500, renewable annually.

Founded in 2001, the Point Foundation in the only U.S. organization devoted to providing higher education subsidies to LGBT students. Last year, it awarded 20 scholarships.

"Our newest Point Scholars represent the best and brightest in our community, coming from diverse educational fields, genders and gender identities, sexual orientations, racial backgrounds, economic circumstances and geography," said Bruce Lindstrom, Point Foundation founder and chairman of the board of directors.
