Can't Sleep
« on: April 21, 2009, 01:22:02 am »
I just can't sleep, for as long as I can remember I haven't been able to sleep at night no matter how tired I am I can't sleep. I get maybe 3 hours of sleep a night or less. If I'm lucky I get 20 to 25 Hours of sleep a week. Any suggestions?

Are you physically or mentally tired when you go to bed? Or both? Are you uncomfortable? Are you thinking too much? I'm a night person so my mind generally objects to going to bed. That and my body and mind are never tired at the same time. One is always awake and ready to go.

Try adjusting the temperature. Cold air helps me sleep. If I'm not shivering, it is too warm.

Get up. When my brain is keeping me awake, sometimes I will get out of bed and busy myself with something on the computer. After maybe 30 minutes it will quiet down and I will be able to sleep.

You could always try a sleeping pill, although I personally do not care for such things.

You can also try some kind of low steady sound to drown out the night. I use a fan.

It also helps to keep a regular sleeping schedule. If you go to bed at get up at random times your body will never be in sync.

Couple basic tips.

Do not eat nor drink anything stimulation (preferably nothing at all) for the last 3-5 hours of the day before you go to sleep.

Always get up, out of bed, at the same time in the morning.

Always go to bed at the same time in the evening.

Use bed for what bed is for Only. That is to say, it's for relaxing/sleeping and enjoying quality time with your mate and Nothing else. If you have a TV in your bedroom, get rid of it.

Maintain a healthy balanced diet and regular exercise.

I struggled with severe insomnia from age 15 onward, though I've always had a certain neurosis when it comes to sleep. At 16, the insomnia was so severe that I saw a doctor and was prescribed Ambien. It worked perfectly for a year before my mother decided I was addicted (which I was not) and took me off the stuff.

After that point, I took a lot of Unisom and Sominex (over the counter sleep aids) with varying success. However, it was not until I began to deal with the underlying psychological issues that I began to truly conquer my sleep difficulties.

At this point in my life, 10 years after first going on sleep meds, I take a Benadryl or 2 before bed. Benadryl's active ingredient is diphenhydramine, the same chemical used in over the counter sleep meds. It is usually sufficient, but when I have worse trouble getting to sleep, I like to play a little game where I pick the lightest spot in the room, focus on it, and try to see how long I can look at it without closing my eyes. Invariably, the longer I focus on it and try to keep my eyes open, they end up shutting, and sleep ensues. Don't know why it works, but it does.

I often deal with insomnia. Plus people wake me up at all hours if I do go to sleep. Usually starting about 4:00 am.
