Title: Tips on How to Stop Smoking?
Post by: Jamie87 on March 25, 2017, 11:06:11 AM
I have had a bear of a time attempting to stop smoking. I am currently on HRT and I know how horribly dangerous it is to continue smoking. I have been trying to quit, but every time I do I get the shakes, I cannot sleep, crazy irritable, I feel sick and eventually give up. I have tried 3-4 times in the last year. I feel like I am at the end of my rope here, its so frustrating! I wish that I had never have started but its too late for that. Does anybody here have some tips on how to stop or what you did to stop?!

I did it with Vaping. I Found a couple of flavors I liked better than cigs and a nicotine level that kept me happy and was able to give up the cigs completely.
I did the vaping for 2 years and then stated cutting down the nicotine level a little each week. after 2 months I was at zero nicotine and was able to walk away from the vaping.
I still had the urge of the hand to mouth habit so I made sure I had hard candies or nuts or whatever around to satisfy that.
It's been 5 months now and all of the urges are gone. It feels really great to be smoke free!
Good luck, keep trying, you will make it!

I used Chantix and reduced the nicotine cigarette content in a process called fading.

I just googled some info about Chantix, and it seems as though its a prescription drug. I read some of the reviews and how the pill actually intacts with the brain to stop nicotine receptors (pretty cool stuff). I am currently living in Japan right now, and I am wondering if I can get this OTC or if I have to go to a doctor to get it prescribed. I will ask some of my friends tomorrow if they have heard of it. Thanks for the information.

Get a good quality e-cig.  It's real easy to quit that way.

I was an on & off smoker for years, started when I was 16-17 and when I hit 22 I decided I had enough of smelling like smoke so bought an e-cig vape and haven't had a cig for about a year now? It wasn't so much the nicotine although I guess it was a part of the addiction but the habit of smoking, I enjoyed taking 5 minutes to myself and having a smoke and a vape pretty much replaces that for me.

I started with quite a high nicotine e-juice and now I have gone all the way down to the lowest of 3mg, there are some pretty nice flavours out there too which certainly taste better than cigs. I also no longer have that nasty smokers cough which is nice.

Have a look around YouTube at vape beginner guides and see if it's right for you.

If you have anymore questions you can shoot me a PM, visiting a local vape store is a good idea too, I have found the folks in there extremely helpful and always willing to help newbies out with picking up a new vape and providing tips & pointers, they also let you try out e-juices to see which one you like before you buy a bottle etc.

I tried several things, switching to cigars, nicotine gum, before I found what actually worked which was to go on an all out health kick. Worked on my diet, started strength training, and in the first few weeks, I would go for a long walk every time I wanted a cigarette, and job the last block or so(which was about as far as I could jog at the time) home. Being out of breath made me not want to light up, and I liked that I was losing weight as well.

I eventually gained the weight back, but I've been smoke free for over 14 years.

Probably you need prescription. Chantix, Champix, and Varenicline are all the same thing. This is the most effective way of quitting smoking.

However, as I have to drink alcohol beverage, I do not try Chantix, which is known to cause side effects with alcohol beverage. Instead, I am attaching a smoking patch.

Good luck!

I started smoking about 6 months after I enlisted in the military, and quit after about a year when I became more health and fitness minded, and even though I only smoked for a year it was still difficult to quit, but the way I did it was by weaning (I also stopped drinking alcohol at the same time, so that made it easier to wean myself off cigarettes, because alcohol made me crave them more). I was a pack a day smoker and the way I weaned off of them was to have have one after meals and one extra one in the evening, then every week I subtracted one cigarette, until I was down to one after breakfast, and that one was the hardest to stop, it probably took me a few weeks to drop that one, and I would go a couple of weeks without one and then I would give into the cravings and smoke one (and after I finished it I felt shame, and disgust), but I didn't let those failures make me give and start smoking again, in fact I identified why I gave in and smoked, and I tried to avoid those obstacles, and if I gave in I would focus on those feelings of shame and disgust which made me hate cigarettes even more and strengthened my resolve to stop smoking.  I kept the quit smoking mind frame and I didn't give up (that is the key; never give up) and after a couple of months I was free of the habit.

You can do it, just think about all of the things you hate about smoking, and how much harm it is doing to your health.

This is by no means a medical advice but anecdotes from some of our patients.... Chantix and d likes worked for some but has not work for some... Some patients reported that they used d cream of tartar mixed with water and they swear by it.... Some said that that they had d worst migraine nausea and vomiting for 3 days... I wouldnt advice it I think the patch is safer bec cream of tartar is high in potassium and can do some harm....u can google and you tube it but I don't think it's safe you might end up in the ER....

The most powerful tool you have at your disposal is your own mind. I was a 30 a day smoker till July last year when my therapist saw me having a smoke before I went into her session which was my first since starting HRT.

The only thing she said to me was

"After all the crap you have been through to get on HRT and you still don't have enough motivation...really"?

That stuck inside my head like a fish hook and it felt like she was saying to me, you would put your entire transition in jeopardy just so you could still smoke....I quit 2 days later and haven' had one since...I started when I was 10

I used Champix. It is normally a 12 week program with the expectation that you stop smoking in week 2. I stopped smoking in week 2 of the program and then never felt like a smoke again. I will say though that when i get stressed out sometimes i do feel like a cigarette and i jokingly tell my husband im going to start smoking again hahaha. But no joke the Champix works and yeah they are done through prescription. :)

My wife, a 50+ year smoker as in smoking for all that time, jokes "Super Gluing my lips together" but then realizes she is smart enough to figure something else out like.... a nostril.

Total Disclosure, I have never smoked in my life, grew up in a smoking household which included extended family and.... been with this woman some almost 40 years now. Also saw my Dad go through 3 lung cancer treatments before it got to him. My Mom in her 40's with a heart attack

As a smoker you probably have noticed a lot of associated behaviors like, The car won't start without first lighting up a cigarette, A meal tastes Sooooooo much better when you light up right after eating; etc.. The list goes on. And certain foods, like meat will feed the craving as well as alcohol. Oh... and let's not forget the endless 2-3 smokers together and there is never more then a 20 Sec interval over the course of hours without a cigarette going by one or both.

The one time my wife did quit was going cold turkey as well as avoiding all the associative behaviors as much as possible. Her life or living situation had a dramatic change so the latter was easier. That lasted a few months until a New Years Eve party at a friends place and she insisted my essentially non-drinking wife have a drink. The rest is history.

She will go through various aspects of tapering off. Like counting how much you smoke each day. Or allocating a certain number per day. Do just 1 less per day. No luck, just a very temporary reduction then full on let's do 2 packs today to make up for what I missed.

About 10 years back or so she tried Chantrix. Being a good rule-bound scientific type she followed the directions EXACTLY. By day 2 she had no desire to smoke. Great! you would think but the "Directions" said not to stop the first week. By week two the cravings were back full bore. Now after 3 years of being tied to the end of a oxygen hose she tried again. No Luck.

A lot has changed for her in 10 years or more considering all the other drugs she takes and her mantra "It's the Only Pleasure I have". I guess coughing your lungs out for 18 cigs to get a little pleasure from 1 or 2 is worth it when for the past 15 years you have a life filled with chronic pain and ..... no clear future thanks to your husband dropping the T-Bomb on you

Take solace in knowing from those in the know, Heroin is easier to kick then nicotine  :(

I know, the struggle is real, lol.  I have tried vaping, but it causes me to cough horribly when I use it.  I have heard that it might be too high of a nicotine level.  I did hypnosis in the past and it worked for eight months to a year, somewhere in that neighborhood.  I am thinking about trying that route again.

Any tips on how not to cough using a vape?  I would really love to switch.

BTW, I have been smoking for 32 years.

You just adjust to the vape like you did to smoking in the beginning.  Reducing nicotine level will also reduce that harshness in your throat.

Vaping may or may not be totally harmless; the science is still contradictory.  But it is several orders of magnitude less harmful than inhaling burning leaves since it eliminates the carbon monoxide and several hundred other toxic substances.

If you do decide to vape I highly recommend going to a vape shop and spending the money on a high quality device.  If you don't do that in the beginning you will later on anyway.  An adjustable power device will let you adjust the vape to your liking, either weaker or stronger as desired.  I have also found the low resistance devices better for me.  The total cost for a new setup like that is around $100.  After that the only cost is new e-juice and replacement atomizers.  In the long run it is somewhat less expensive than tobacco is these days.  I use mine a lot and estimate it's costing me about $2 a day.  In comparison, when I was smoking it was around $7.50 a day.

My current settings are .33 ohms and 40w with .6 (?) nicotine.  It is a fairly good device, but I just can't seem to keep from coughing.  I will keep trying though.  I am just now reaching out to gender Therapists in my area, but difficult when my insurance doesn't cover even tg therapy.  So I have a little time.

That sounds like a good device.  At those settings it's probably giving a warm vape with a lot of vapor.  If you reduce the power some it will give you a cooler vape with less "throat hit".  That might help.  In the end though it's just a matter of finding the right settings that eliminate any desire for tobacco.

Spend the money on something else?

Besides the main reason I never could get into smoking - I don't really like the taste or the smell - I never could figure how others could even afford the habit. I couldn't.

Realize your higher power. Mine is my children. I stopped for them. Cigs, Booze and Drugs. All at the same time. Cold turkey. To this day 30 years later, I do not regret it as my kids have followed my suggestions and have never used any of these substances.  I tell my son everyday. Thanks for saving my life.

try vaping, but anyways, no matter what you try, the abstinence syndrome is going to hit you hard, like, extremely hard, but you have to go through it like a trooper, that's the only way, when the abstinence fades you'll be a lot better.

For me I just quit cold turkey. It was horrible for a few weeks but after that, day by day, the cravings subsided until I just didn't think about smoking anymore. In fact it made me sick of the thought of it now.
Lots of good advice here, try not to make a big deal out of it if you can. When you have those moments of weakness just come here and talk it out, we've got your back. Distract yourself any way you can, and if you slip up don't beat yourself up about it, just refocus and get on with the job of quitting. You'll get there.
I took up running shortly after I quit to fill the gap and be more pro-active about my health. I've never looked back, it's the best thing I ever did.

This quote from your therapist... I read it a day ago and its been stewing in the back of my head since then... I mean, so far, I have lost more than 100 lbs in preparation for HRT. I had to go to switch my doctor twice (I started HRT a couple of years ago and had to stop because it was so hard to find a doctor (she quit her practice)), AND I found a way to legally ship them into Japan while I am here on my work contract. I have done so many amazing things in my life and my blood is BOILING that I am capable of falling prey to something so simple. I have to do some research on some of these methods. I will report in as soon I figure something out and provide updates when I can.

Thank you everyone so far!

I know, it drove me nuts, I could not get it out of my head because it was the simple truth, I hated it and I knew it was exactly right so I just quit and used that to niggle at me, to challenge me to have another ciggy...I would think...go on I dare you, have one...then go face your therapist.

Lets face it, 72 hrs after quitting the worst of the physical stuff is over. Yes the craving are still there but mainly in your head, if your "mind set" is correct then you will not look back. If you think you will fail you are right!!!

All of the sub-ohm coils I tried gave a very hot vape and caused me to cough. I found a 1.8 ohm coil at 11-12 watts gave a cool and very flavorful vape.

Update:

I have read the book "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr.

The book is impressive and powerful, as stopping smoking is not about the physiology on nicotine or carbon monoxide, but about our mind, psychology. I completely agree, and realized it.
I even removed the nicotine patch on my shoulders. I have been without smoking for > 3 days, even without any nicotine replacement. I am sure I can stop smoking, and I feel I already succeeded in it. Yes. The number of days does not matter here.

I talked to one of my coworkers about trying to stop smoking. As it turns out, he smoked 3 packs a day for 10 years. He decided to quit one day, and just did it. Cold turkey. Props to that man. I felt pretty motivated by what he told me. The last 2 days, I went from 25 cigarettes/day to 7/day. I am feeling pretty crappy but he told me that the more I cut back, the better I will feel. My goal is to have my last cigarette on the 12th of April. Wish me luck!

I actually being researching e-cigs and glad people have had success with them.

I started smoking at 19 while at college, social smoking then, only when I dressed up as noleen. As a guy I found myself attracted to a women with a cigarette.. so when I was dressed as one, I smoked.

Then I started working and started hrt, I kinda become a regular smoker as was I full time. I am addicted as I get major cravings. I managed to remain a light smoker (3 to 5 a day).

Lately I have being thinking of weaning myself off cigarettes with an e-cig.

I like many here started smoking regularly as a young teenager and smoked steadily until I was about 50. I smoke about a pack and a half most days. I ran out of cigarettes one day while out working and refused to pay the higher prices in Washington and decided to wait until I got back to a grocery store on Oregon. I did what little grocery shopping I had to do and looked of to the cigarette counter to see about a dozen workers in line to cash their paychecks. I said to myself I was too tired to wait in that line and went home without buying my cigarettes. I made it through that night and I have yet to buy that next pack to this day. For me that was the key. Day after day I woke up and could not wait to see if I could make it through the day w/o buying that pack of cigarettes and it has worked for more 17 years now. It just one day at a time.

  Hugs,
   Laurie

Once you're off them, it's not ok to have just one. Not even just this one time. That was always my downfall, but the last time I quit, I made no exceptions, and now it's been almost 8 years.

Hi,
Good for you for trying.  I had every opportunity to get hooked on cigarettes when I was young but I was lucky they didn't agree with me.  Same with Coffee.

It's smart of you to get off them, I have a brother-in-law who had a heart attack and stroke in his mid 40s.  He was healthy, athletic but smoked a lot.  I also had a close friend die of lung cancer at 51.  There's no good way to die but this has to be one of the worst.

I worked with a couple of Russian computer programmers that were terrible chain smokers.  They had smoked for years.  They're around 50,  both of them quit when they tried vaping.

I also know an older couple that swear by laser therapy for smoking.  They were chain smokers too, the wife had a really bad smokers cough.  They tried the laser therapy and were able to quit rather quickly.

I guess different methods work for different people.

Lord knows this a hard thing to do.  Good luck,
Paige :)

I was smoking right up until the end of my first month on HRT(have been since 10)...I went to see my Psychologist, it was in the middle of some fairly traumatic stuff and I had just started HRT. Anyway I was standing having a fag when I saw her this day just as she arrived and she waved at me on her way inside.

As we were about to finish up the session which again had been a really difficult one(me being stubborn...surprise surprise) she said to me something like this

" You have sat there week after week expressing your pain and frustration about having to wait for HRT and finally you are here is that not enough motivation to give up."

Now I didn't say much but inwardly I was seething...I was just so angry with her...How dare she...what the hell right has she got to say to me....

As I calmed down on the drive home it struck me that apart from whatever else I had to say, she was right...how many more excuses could I find, I had been finding them for years...

So I quit the next day and told no one for the first week...My wife noticed after 24 hours and asked me about it. I told her I don't smoke cigarettes anymore...she said Oh you have given up...I said no, I don't smoke anymore...and I haven't since. I dealt with it the same way I dealt with my Alcohol Problems. The solution can only come from me.

I am coming up to 1 year smoke free and one of the biggest things about giving up for me was I am no longer constantly worried about the harm I am doing to myself. It used to worry me all the time(as I puffed away) and a swift kick in the slats helped immensely to but things in perspective for me.

The benefits have been huge with a small downside of gaining about 6-7 KG along with 2-3 from the implanted E...I can and am losing the weight. I would sooner put on a little weight and feel the way I do than smoke.

Now it's 5 weeks. I guess I become a nonsmoker.

barbie~~

I hope this goes well for you. Nicotine is the most viciously addictive drug commonly available in our society. It will take a lot longer than a couple of months to be over it, but I hope you stay with it. There's probably nothing you'll ever do that will be better for your health or your appearance than stopping smoking. Good luck to you and everyone else on this thread.

Now it's 3 months.

I noticed that my weight considerably increased. There were some factors for it, but certainly stopping smoking was one of them. During the past few weeks, I have run and hiked a lot including a full-course marathon.

I quitted twice with Nicorette patches. It keeps your nicotine levels in blood high to avoid cravings and you can use the time to break psychological dependency of it. After 2 months - you don't really crave for cigarette. After full year, you're good for life insurance rate as a non-smoker.

Psychologically - you need to go into healthier lifestyle, avoid triggers (never smoke if you drink alcohol for instance, just take another shot of tequila rather), and pretty much keep reminding yourself why you no longer ever want to smoke again ('girls don't smoke' is as good as any other reason).

I swear by these patches, although I started the bad habit again after 7 years

I remember back when I started,  Cigs cost $.25 a pack at the vending machine at the USA gas station. How you all are affording $5 a pack is unbelievable.  $1825 a year for a pack a day, smoker.  Any more than that will pay for some ffs surgeries.

Hello,

I am a Transwoman on HRT. I took Chantix once a day until I stopped. Chantix and smoking will make you sick. I now have six days smoke free. Honestly the only suggestion I can make that worked for me was logging into Nicotine Anonymous and joining the phone meetings. They also have a facebook group which is good for gaining support on any smoking related issue you are honest enough to post. Tomorrow will be one week. I always use therapy as an excuse to smoke. I am asking my higher power to get me through tomorrow smoke free.

About 10 years ago, I once stopped smoking for 3 months with help of nicotine patches. Yes. Nicotine patches relieve some withdrawal symptoms, but actually they are not so much helpful in stopping smoking for long term.

At this time, I stopped smoking without any patch or medicine. This is exactly what the book, Allen Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Smoking", says about. You can download the book at http://prdupl02.ynet.co.il/ForumFiles_2/15119301.pdf

And refer the following web site: https://www.allencarr.com/

Well done to all in this thread... I really hope you keep it up..

I have been a daily smoker for about 8 years now. I know its bad for me, yet I do it. I dont want to be a smoker for life, but I dont have the will to quit.. its sad I know.

Ok I am not a heavy smoker.. I smoke between 3 and 5 a day, but nothing beats that feeling when I light up after work.

Yes. The number of days does not matter here.

barbie~~

Now 6 months has passed since I stopped smoking. But still I sometimes miss smoking.... once a day.
Yes. It was not so much difficult to stop smoking after I read the book.

Stubbornness played a significant part in my quitting smoking about 16 and a half years ago. I won't go into details but I quit cold turkey after running out one day. I made it through the night and just never bought that next pack. I'd say it took close to two years to stop reaching into my shirt pocket for the pack that wasn't there. I did it as I did stopping alcohol. one day at a time..

It can be done,

Hugs,

Many report good results with Chantix, however I would urge caution. After 8 weeks on Chantix I started hearing and seeing things that didn't exist. I was even seeing text and emails that were never there and would get upset when they couldn't be found again.

I actually believed I got a message that I was to report to court regarding some "federal offense". That I was to consider myself under arrest upon receipt of the message. That my computer, phone, bank account were to be seized, etc.

On a Saturday, I kept calling the local DEA office until the on-call officer called me back. He laughed and said that's not how we work. If we wanted you, we'd be at your door. I think all the meds I take from having my system working incorrectly are a severe illness prompted the call to the DEA.

MY Primary Care Doctor prescribed the Chantix. Next time I saw my Psychiatrist (for PTSD), she said she would never have recommended I use Chantix.

Just my experience. Should anyone experience something "odd" after starting Chantix, please contact your Physician.

Stop smoking is not that difficult. The hard thing is staying off.

I stoped smoking cigarettes some time in early September, switched to e-cigarettes. I quieted those December 12th.

I usually don't have a hard time so far but sometimes I do. Especially when I'm sitting by my computer and studying. After some time I really want to go for a smoke break. It drives me nuts! So I'm trying to drink some water, relax, breath, go for a walk in the city. Put on some calming music.

But one dilemma for me is that I really love smoking. Gosh.
