Title: Pre-employment drug test and hrt.
Post by: Ltl89 on September 18, 2013, 07:46:27 PM
Hello all,

This is probably a silly question, but does Estradiol or Spiro show up on a drug test?  I have to be tested for employment reasons and would really prefer not disclosing that I am on hrt.  I imagine that I am fine, but will this be detected in any way or show up false positives?

Also, does anyone know if anti-depressants (cymbalta to be specific) are looked for during a drug test?  I imagine they aren't, but I'd like to hear from others because I'd rather not disclose I'm on this to my employer.  You know how some employers can look down on people for treatment with depression.

I'm sure that I'm panicking about nothing; however, I want to make sure everything goes okay.  To be honest, I'm more concerned about the required physical and explaining my developing chest, lol. I'd hate to omit any important information, but I want to work and would like to avoid any complications, especially since this isn't relevant to my job performance.

Thanks for any feedback. :)

Companies have to pay to have things screened and your drugs like cymbalta would be covered by the ADA in the states.  It would be foolish and open them up to lawsuits if they screened you for those.  They only screen for illegal narcotics. Don't worry.

When I was working as a stevedore and on hrt for the first couple years, I had to get drug tested regularly and they never mentioned anything about finding those. At the time, my employer did not know I was on hrt either. Didn't disclose that until after the company shut down.

Thanks guys.  I'm just a little worried because it's a position in medical, so I don't know how much they will be testing.  I'll just have to chance it.  Some people are already aware of my transition, but I don't want to chance anything by listing the hrt.  I guess it's silly to worry about because it's really nothing to talk about, and I have a prescription in case there are problems.

Typical drug tests won't show that you are taking estrogen..

Not that they would test for it. It's kinda opening themselves to huge lawsuits as the second poster said!

The place where I work requires a 10 panel drug test with urine and hair follicle.  I dont have to disclose any medications and if something does show up then the lab performing the test will call to check for prescriptions before publishing the results to the employer.  I know this because I take a muscle relaxer for my back occasionally and it showed up. Everything is private these days so there shouldn't be any worries

Yup.

Was on a HRT when I had to take a drug screening for my new employer.  I was worried about, but really shouldn't have been. They are not screen for that kind of thing, and like the other poster said, they open themselves up to lawsuits if the do...

The crazy paranoid girl is back for more.  So, the dreaded day comes very very close.  To be clear, should I worry about any of the following meds:

Estradiol
Spironolactone
Cymbalta
Ibuprofen
Melatonin.

I'm going to disclose my occasional ibuprofen usage as well as my nightly melatonin sleep aid, but I would prefer to avoid telling them about the first three.  So, I should be good right.  They aren't going to test for that nor do I have to worry about some weird false positive, right?  Sorry for being crazy, but I want to be super aware.

Thanks!!!

Correct.  You do not need to worry about those. They will not test for them. It will be okay.

Thank you so much!  I keep freaking out thinking I will be detected for estrogen or the combination of these meds will create some weird false positive, lol.  You know me and my irrational fears.

As a retired paramedic everyone above is correct. They are only looking for opioids, THC, etc. Don't sweat it girl, you can relax! :)
