Title: How long is your hair?
Post by: Katie Ellen on April 23, 2018, 10:09:23 AM
I haven't cut my hair since Aug 2017. It was only about 1/2" long at that time. It is now 4-5" long. I'm not out to anyone but my wife.

I'm retired, but by Christmas my friends were kidding that I needed a haircut. I see most of my friends during the summer playing golf, etc. It's almost that time of year and I'm not ready to come out yet.

I'm trying to decide whether to cut it short and start again this August or let it keep growing and deal with the jokes?
I hope to be starting HRT very soon.

Have you let your hair grow?

Hi Katie. I am in the process of regrowing my hair.  It was down to the center of my back for decades, until I got a wild hair up my butt and cut it.  That was 20 years ago and wish I hadn't.
Keep growing your hair, try not to allow peer pressure to dictate your actions.  Who cares about a little ribbing, when what you will gain means so much more.

people got used to me with long hair. I'd get it cut about mid-ear length a few times a year (once it reached my shoulders). Or I'd be lazy and just trim my bangs out of my face and it'd go over my shoulders.

Not sure on length now but it's roughly mid-shoulder-blade area and still going.  My bangs need to catch up due to the trimmings, close to chin length now.

I'm 58 and here is my hair.  I haven't cut it, except for occasionally trimming the ends, since I started HRT in Jan 2015.  So, that's about three years.

Did HRT help make your hair thicker/fuller? My hair is very fine. I could use a little more fullness on top.

I feel like HRT made my hair finer.  That may be an illusion though since it's never been long before.  I don't think it changed thickness at all but it was pretty thick to start with.

I have let it get to shoulder length but I'm going to get it cut short in a day or so. Long's not great for some of the summer outdoors stuff, might let it grow out in the winter. I have clippers and fairly good at cutting my own hair so I'll probably just use that for a while.

My hair just touches my shoulder blades. I love trying different styles every day. Some days I am wild as the wind, other I may have a ponytail (high or low or even asymetric) braids, pigtails. I love to tie colored bows in, or weave ribbons into my braids. I do get some second looks when topless in guy mode! And it is all fun.

The hair was dyed about 2 months ago blonde, my dark is coming back.  I think I cut it to just below the neck back then if I recall.  It grows relatively fast now.

If I could figure out how to insert the pic directly I'd do it. Pft :P

My hair is about 4"-5" long (see avatar). I used to just buzz it with clippers because I never knew what to do with it (men's haircuts... ewww), but I started letting grow last fall. I can't wait for it to be long enough to do stuff with!  ;D

Doreen,

I don't know how to do that either.

I love your hair!

Michelle - Your hair looks great! Very feminine.

Deborah - Someday I want to be able to have a ponytail like yours. Guess that means I shouldn't cut it?

At the risk of ruining everyone's day with unfiltered facial features, here is a snap from, oh, just now showing wind-blown  front length. It's much longer in the back but for some reason I couldn't get my arms to twist back there.

I started growing my hair august 2017 too. It's now just past my ears now on the side. When I pulled it down as straight as possible it's past my mouth in the front.

The back... I won't even go there it's a mess right now lol
All over my head the hairs are SO uneven but I just have to let it grow out. I really was hoping it would look better/grow more than this by now...

It's very hard for me to be in this inbetween phase. In "guy" mode, I would have my hair buzzed very short every 4 to 6 weeks. I'm so used to it being neat. I guess this is (yet another) a struggle I have to go through right now.

I started growing my hair out in 2009. My hair is down to mid buttocks now . I desperately want to cut it drastically. Its a pain in the ass to style ( it takes me 3+ hours to flat iron it) . But I am terrified to cut it because I remember the days when I dreamed of having long hair .  It almost feels like betraying myself .  Over the years I have had it cut several times 6 inches here , 8 inches there. I would like to cut off a good 10-12 inches but can't bring myself to do it .

@GCHR88 .... I agree with your comment about "betraying myself" and the other comments on this thread about hair and how hard it was to finally grow out hair that could be styled in a nice feminine way.   I have been full-time for over a year and a half now, and I started growing out my hair back well before I started HRT over 3 years ago.
I keep my hair length at or just below shoulder length and when it gets longer than that and I know that I need to have it cut, it just pains me...  part of me wants to grow it much longer but like you said it then becomes a big task to style and to get ready to go out and about with it looking good.
Thanks for posting your comments
Hugs,
Danielle

Presently falls about an inch above my bra strap, so well past the point where I need to take good care of it. It's a little bit of extra work I'm glad to do and I plan to let it grow another year to midback. I'll see then it it's starting to be a problem with daily activities, I'd love to grow it to lower back or more ... TBD.

Based on my experience: Keep it growing. Hair is painfully slow to grow. February 2017 was the last time I went for my pervious 1/4 inch buzz cut. And that hurt so much, but there was no other practical choice back then. I had the tips trimmed once since and to be fair it needs to be done again since they started splicing. Lucky enough I decided to go full time in June of 2017, so at least most people knew. Except my in-laws. I did go through a lot of pain in the first 8 month before it finally had reached a length where I could do something with it. By now it has grown to be about shoulder length. I do want another 4 inches, pretty much center breast.

There are a few things I can already do with my hair but since it is still a bit different in length, I sometimes let it air dry which gives me some nice wavy hair. Many days I actually have to contain it with either a hair band or a Pony Tail. Need the cool breeze in the summer and right now they just keep blowing in my face way too much.

So I just had to live for a long time with stupid comments. Especially from my in-laws. My wife finally blew a fuse and told them (she did not want to for a while longer) which stopped the stupid comments. Her coworkers still make stupid comments but I just avoid them altogether.

Sp if you can deal with comments or if you find a funny reply (like: "No worries, I auditioned for a metal band and they require long hair") you may want to keep going. It just takes too long to grow the,m back.

Back when people were giving me a hard time about hair I had two standard replies.  Either I said I was growing it long because I like it or that I was maintaining the hair balance of the universe since so many others had no hair at all.  Occasionally someone would ask if I was getting a sex change and I just said that maybe I am.  For the ones that said I looked like a girl I asked them if they were asking me out on a date.  I had a lot of fun with those replies.

Been growing my hair out since May 2015 and right now it's down to around the middle of my shoulder blades. No-one has really given me any grief over it.

I recommend keep growing your hair.

My hair is a few inches below my shoulders. I just started taking collagen about 3 months ago and it had made a huge difference in my nails, skin and hair. I wish I took it years ago. I buy it in bulk on Amazon Prime.  My hair grows faster and looks nicer. My nails were fragile and are now strong. My skin is so much better.

When I was growing my hair out and before coming out at work I would sweep the hair behind my ears. Then about a Month before coming out I let it come own on the sides. I had a bunch of comments and would respond I like my hair this way. (I too got the are you going for a sex change comment too and I would say yes and smile. The other person would smile back thinking I was joking). One guy would corner me and ask what is up. He did it at meetings and in the cafeteria in line and in the hallway. He is the Assistant Director in Security. I told him the President of the hospital and my EVP and the EVP of HR are fine with me wearing my hair this way, what is the issue?

About a week later I called his boss and asked for his help as I needed a new ID with a different name on it. He was super supportive as well as his assistant director.

I had hair transplants twice. I may go back a third time but I do not know if I need them. Anyhow, I love my hair, the thickness, the color (blond, I have since colored my hair and it looks different than in my avatar) and how it feels on my head. It really is something that says feminine. It makes my face.

At some point you will need to confront the dragons under the table. I choose to do it in steps. Growing my hair, I took a huge amount of daily crap for years at home. My Ex no longer lives here and my daughter never says anything about my hair. She comments my lipstick is to bright (she never wears makeup, does not have pierced ears and wears a T shirt and jeans). When I visit my ex she never has a comment about how I look.

So, if you grow your hair will you color it? If so, what color? How long do you want it?

Ah makes sense then.  I do my best in life to avoid too much drama though.. I had my fill of that in other locations :)  My heart goes to you willing to do that .. I tend to get migraines.  But in case anyone missed it here's the back of my head again (#shamelessplug)  ^_^  https://imgur.com/a/lTKVbNJ (https://imgur.com/a/lTKVbNJ)

My hair is finally becoming what I love.  Now if the rest of me would follow suite.  Unfortunately I can't be 18 and hot again.

Maybe you should just let it continue to grow people like to poke fun ,shrudge it off  seems to me your growing your hair for yourself not what other people think but how you feel and think, and everybody knows nothing takes longer to grow out than a regretable hair cut.think about it how will you feel thats what matters most of all

My last cut was in December 2017 and it is now starting to curl on the bottom.  I have had the comments that it is time for a haricut as well, i have said that i am growing it out as i never have before.  It has seemed to do the trick for now anyways.

That's cool! I can't wait to say "the last time I cut my hair was in 2017" and have the year be 2020 [emoji4] well I don't really wanna be a few years older but that's my fault anyway (for not growing my hair out when I first wanted to years ago...)

It's a little old, it's a tad longer now( it's been a few months when I got my hair died back to its natural colour from scarlet) I'll take a new one tomorrow. (Still love my hair) and side note, it's never to late to start growing your hair, that's not your fault. 😊

Well put!

One thought I had when I decided to take the leap and transition was that when I check out of this world the only person I know for a fact will be there is myself. If I get the opportunity to reflect on my life before I go I would rather look back and accept that people left me for being who I am than look back and regret that I lived my life for them, not myself, and therefore was never truly happy.

Being rejected hurts, but not as disliking or even hating myself. My girlfriend and I are still close, but it appears I may have lost a partner. I am so, so, so very sad about this. Especially given that since I started HRT I feel so much more at ease and feel like I am able to provide what she wanted emotionally so much better. I am just forcing myself to accept that and cherish the very close, loving friendship we fortunately still have. If I lived as John just for her, I never could have made her happy and I never would have been either.

I guess I haven't cut it short now since mid 2015 here's an image of it just above bra strap. I really do love my hair and that I can wear it in the ponytail look I always found most attractive in other women :-).

I really do envy you younger women the fullness of your hair! Some of my baldness has gone, still, I'm definitely only playing with a half deck of follicles.

The longest it has ever been, last time I did this around the head plait I had used extensions. I no longer use extensions and it's a fat plait :'3. Heres a few pics of it. I am beyond happy with my hair. Just need it maybe 6 inches more and it will be epic.

I've been growing mine since July 2015 but have been getting the ends trimmed every 10 weeks or so. I've finally reached the point where I'm happy with the length. It can be a hassle at times, but I've yearned to have long hair since a small child so am absolutely loving it!

My avatar pic was taken recently so it shows the current length.

Thanks Doreen, Blonde is lovely, looks about the same length as mine too.
Been tempted to go blondish, but it's not the same as a natural blonde so I have avoided it so far.
Balyage is maybe as far as I will go, for summer fun maybe :'3

You're welcome ! It was honest.

This was the first time I went blonde.. ever.  All my siblings, cousins, distant relations were ALL born blonde! Except me.  I was born dark lol.  Not sure what genetic variant button I hit, but I got the doozer of mutations.  (Brown hair is but one of many.  I'm also taller than all of them, and intersexed to boot.  Talk about double whammies).  So I went blonde a couple months ago :)  I get a lot of compliments, even if its fake  >:-)

How has the blonde been?? It hasn't dried out your hair more than normal??
I'm curious about it, but aftraid of the negative effects and upkeep :')

It actually made my hair much poofier.  The drying out I counter with using lots of conditioner and leaving it in over & hour before washing it out.  For the first time in all my life I actually LOVE my hair.  Took me 40+ years to get to this point.   There haven't been too many negative effects, and my upkeep is relatively simple.  It probably worked so well because I don't do it often (or at all really).

Oh, I'm 6'2.  The next tallest sibling is 5'11.  I outgrew my next oldest brother when I was 5 years old.  I just grew ridiculously fast & tall.. had nothing to do with androgen influence either.  Just my unique genome I'm thinking.

My hair currently falls at roughly mid jaw length after getting about 5-6 inches removed. Caught a lot of grief for it too. I just played it off as "you get what you pay for".

8~ months growing it out from practically a buzz cut.. It's such a tedious process (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180424/4db59dcd93b4228e987e6e704cade1ed.jpg)

Patience dearheart. 😊 All you have to do to have super long hair is breathe in and out a few more million times and not cut it. It's going to happen, it is kinda default.

@Allison S :  In your posted picture your hair is near a great length to start experimenting with different feminine hair styles.
Yes, indeed, growing hair out to a longer length is worse than watching paint dry.  That is why most trans-women are loathe to cut there hair even when it needs it!!!
I have cut my hair several times since I became full time... usually a trim and style.  My hair length is usually from top of the shoulder to just below the shoulder like in my current Avatar Profile picture... usually no longer.... that is a good length for me so I don't end up with hair in my face when I am working in my office with paperwork and stuff.  When I go to the gym or involved in activities I usually have it in a PonyTail.
Thanks for your posting and your picture.

I do try stuff but I really don't like most styles on my face. When it's long I'd just wanna wear it down and maybe even hide. I always liked how the girl in the movie the ring did that. She didn't really creep me out much

Well, I keep my hair in a ponytail at all times. There are bangs in the front, and with like a group of strands hanging down my side burn areas I guess? Not sure what to call it but its a hairstyle that I like. Anyways, without the hair being tied in a band it will hang a bit past my shoulders. It looks very messy when its down, so that is why I make sure it's always up!

My hair is about shoulder blade length by now, or to my armpits. I'm growing it out, and want it at least waist long, but hip length would be preferable if possible. Last time I cut it short was around end of 2014, but it's been very damaged since, so despite growing it's been breaking off a lot too. So it could have been longer by now if it hadn't been stuck at shoulder length for a year until recently.

I also have a "former sidecut" (shaved one side of my head) which I've grown out since late 2016. And that's still shorter than the rest of my hair, but finally long enough to put into a ponytail and is easy to hide into the rest. High ponytails, half-updo's, braids and sideparting are usually my go-to styles.

I trim the ends and cut it in a layered style about 3-4 times a year. I cut it myself with cheap scissors that are made for cutting hair. I wouldn't say I'm good, but then I also don't really care about the result as long as it keeps growing longer. And I'd rather ruin my hair by myself than pay for someone else to do that, cause I don't trust hairdressers. I don't mind it messy though, that's almost my style.

It's me in my profile pic, for reference, and it's taken about a week ago.

Bad image quality but this is about the most accurate image I have right now:

I started growing in 2015 and since then have had to have it shortened some and would usually take off like half an inch every time I got a haircut but haven't been shortening it anymore lately.

Allison, I know it's hard growing it out from short,I have been there.
The best advice I can say is to concentrate on your work or studies and forget about it.
I remember how fast mine used to grow when I was working, it seem to go so fast, but it was the focus on work and getting by, that took my mind of it. Then before I knew it it was a good length.
I also had my hair tied once it was long enough. In the physical line of work it WILL drive you crazy if its not tied. Every month the hair nubbin in bobble got longer and longer :')
It'll happen, try not to worry about it to much

Hello Katie Ellen  I'm new here so please try to bere with my inexperience. my hair is quite long and thick it reaches to the middle of my back. I find that I use it as a weapon to fight my dysphoria and you know what it works for me it is the first sign that the real me is trying to emerge because I am displaying it a little more feminine in baby steps as I am pre HRT but soon I will begin my journey I don't believe I'll be cutting it anytime soon because it empowers me and helps me to overcome the stereotypical adversity. I recently had an older gentleman tell me you know you're wearing your hair like a girl and my response was a mere, DA. He then did not know how to quite react to me and  he left me alone. This did not make me weaker but stronger because I thought how dare this person try to get me to conform to his own ideas after all it's my life not his. My long hair is my only weapon to use against this type of discrimination because I have this big masculine body and believe that I'll never pass but that's okay I've already worked through this and it's certainly not enough to stop me like I said earlier it's my life to live not his. This is just been the first shot at me and there's certain to be more as I begin my journey and refused to abide by  social Hang Ups I sure hope I can keep this attitude up because I think I will emerge as The Ugly Duckling not the beautiful swan but we'll see as time goes on I will turn each shot at me into empowerment not embarrassment. love Tatiana

Thanks, yeah you're right, I mean it's decent and I see a lot of women with hair as long as mine or a bit longer and styled.. They look great but that's just not what I want for myself. Or that I,can realistically pull off. I think longer hair would just look better on me but like you said I'll try not to stress it.
I know at this point it'll be nearing a "bob" length very soon so that gives me comfort. After that is a "lob" I think, which I'm really looking forward to.

I honestly don't think so. Maybe a placebo effect as now that my hair is a decent length you don't spend as much time checking the length so it seems to just grow away mad on its own.
Then one day you look and it's like 2 inches longer.

I really don't think it changed anything, I might have said my slight waves relaxed more since, but it could also be there is much more hair and the weight straightens it out abit more, you know?

The only thing it did do was add baby hair fuzz at the front of my hairline in the corners. Finer lighter hair that is

Oh, I am so jealous of all your long hair pictures. Before I came out to myself, I had let my hair get down to my shoulders, or just past it. I was 18 or so and it was the time of hair-bands so the long hair fit in (1980's musical reference for those too young to have seen/heard it.) I loved it, I had amazingly thick hair. On more than one occasion, my barber jokingly said he should charge me double. Now my hair has thinned, my hairline receded, and I have a baldish spot on the back of my head. I wish he had charged me double, now I could ask for half price haircuts. It doesn't look good long. If I had known at 19 I would actually lose most of my hair, I would have left it long for a few more years. Would collagen or HRT help with the thin hair? lol! I even promised my hair that if it filled back in, I would only trim it for neatness, not cut it!

I think my hair is prettier and softer now but I can't really say it is because of HRT because I'm also taking better care of it. And it definitely did not grow any faster.

My hair loss & subsequent regrowth had more to do with genetics and hormonal fluctuations than anything.  On or off HRT I didn't notice any change.. it does SEEM to grow thicker now.  Again could be placebo.  I did have a forehead reduction (ffs).. but looking at my sister, mother, cousins, nieces, etc.. they all had that high dreaded forehead issue.  I fixed mine :P  Ironically I suspect I look more feminine than most my direct female relatives at this point.  Not being mean to them, they look female still of course.

Same here re the jealousy! I recently found a photo of me from my mid-twenties (nearly half a lifetime ago) in which I had long hair. I remember everyone nagging me to get it cut and I finally gave in, but looking back now I'm convinced it was the best I ever looked. Surprisingly, comparing then and now, my hairline hasn't receded that much. I stopped having it cut last autumn and got to the point where I had to tuck it behind my ears. People started telling me to get it cut again but I was determined not to. Then, a couple of weeks ago, I was in a changing room in M&S when, probably accentuated by bright overhead lighting and the kaleidoscope of mirrors, I noticed quite a large thinning patch on the crown! I realised at that point that longer hair won't work for me at the moment and went and got it cut straightaway (though not as short as I usually had it). I'd never noticed such a prominent patch of loss before and am hoping that some may have been caused by shedding due to Finasteride (though probably not as I'd only been on it for about 5 weeks) and that some may grow back through continued use of Finasteride and Minoxidil. Otherwise it may have to be a transplant in the future and no long hair for me for a very long time. :(

I'm lazy about my hair, lol.
I've let it grow out multiple times in the past. I've also had it fairly short. Usually it goes like this: I cut it (fairly short) and then just let it grow and grow and grow... Until it looks really bad (and waaay too long!) and can't take it anymore! And then I'll cut it - but too short again! I'm now in the growing phase again  ;D. About over ear length now. It's long for a guy I guess, but to me it's pretty short still. I won't let it grow long this time though. I was planning to cut it again like a month back but didn't... I sort of like my hair when it goes through those different length phases - as I tend to always cut it too short initially after having it too long for too long, lol!

But I won't ever get that buzzcut!!! I like my hair best with that 'anime guy' length. That's why I'm terrified of getting bald on T... :P Noooooooo! I might need wigs too someday !

I love the idea of this thread, being a long time hair enthusiast (fanatic, maybe). My hair currently reaches 19 inches down from the center top of my head. I'm big into drawing fashion inspiration from celebrities. For several years I've pretty much kept my hair to the same length as actress Jennifer Aniston and we seem to proportionally match at the moment. She's long had a habit of getting a big maintenance cut every few years, then growing it long again. I do, too.

I first grew mine out in nineteen-- well, I was about 21 and that was a few decades ago. The longest I've had mine was in the early '90s when it was almost waist length. I loved it that long, but, oddly, like GCHR88 with her "mid buttocks" length, after growing it quite long I wanted it shorter for awhile. I got a wedge cut and loved it for about a year.

Rachel_Christina, you have the most beautiful hair I've seen on Susan's in years. Your color is perfect, too. Blonding often causes drying and damage. I'm sure you'd be gorgeous blonde, but you there already, babe.

It's about armpit length, I've been growing it for around two and a half years.  The biggest downside is my hair is horrendously frizzy if I don't straighten it, though that tends to get rid of my waves too which I'd prefer to keep.

Overall, I still like it, and I'm planning on letting it grow longer.

Tried measuring it with a micrometer... no luck.

I'm one month and three days on HRT and two week and three days post orchi. Stopped shaving my melon about two weeks ago. The crown looks like a wheat field that was mowed about four years ago and never replanted.

If it doesn't improve visibly by 01 June 2018, the mower will come back out... unless locusts finish it off first.

Most likely it'll never be a keeper, which is why it has been shaved for the past 14 years. Someone took a picture of me with hair. It looked like a wad of cotton that moths had used for a feeding frenzy; my guess is they starved to death.

Could that be why they make wigs?

Hi Katie Ellen,                    17 May 2017

Last "boy" haircut; fantastic. I have started letting mine grow; the sides and back are fine except for the whiteness. The top is looking quite "moth eaten." I'm going to give it a bit more time to see if the HRT will help some, actually a lot.

See you started HRT; Congratulations and welcome to the users club.

Maybe it's simply because I've been really busy and had marginally less time to pamper my hair, I feel I may be approaching the (dreaded) long enough that it starts to be trouble point. I'm finding it tangles a lot more than just a month ago. I've inspected the ends and there seems to be no damage. I'm approaching 4 months since my last cut so there's probably been a bit shy of 2 inches of growth.

Does anyone have experience in the difference between caring for hair that's mid-back length or longer? Mine is now approaching mid back and I'm wondering if difficulty starts going up a lot now?

Hi, Sadie

Mine is just below bust in the front and just above the waist in the back.

As long as I have the ends trimmed every other month it's pretty maintenance free. I mostly just brush it in the mornings, and braid and twist it up when it's likely to get dusty or in the way.
