I saw a photo of a guy wearing a dress with female next to him and the description said "he is not a cross-dresser he is just wearing a dress" and it made me think, just because I wear something like a blouse etc yet do not emulate a woman and by all means look like a man wearing a blouse, panties etc what am I. What am I crossing any different than what most woman do all the time putting on a guys shirt etc.
What do you think? When you hear the term cross-dresser, does it simply imply something physical, Or is it a something mental. Fabric has no gender. Just colors and thread, Right?

I think, basically is when wearing what is socially expected/accepted of the opposite sex's attire.
Like there can be 'man dresses' for men, but usually, wearing a dress is automatically considered 'cross dressing'
Not everyone is born male or female, though, so I guess if you wanted to consider that, it would be what their dominate features most closely align with.

To my mind there is strictly speaking no-such-thing as crossdressing. I'll use the word in conversation to ease the discourse; but if it proceeds beyond a certain point, I will expect the person I am talking to to at least consider that the very idea is just an intrenched habit that is long-overdue for removal. I dress in that manner not because women dress in that manner & I want to emulate women, but because whatever it is that is the reason for that style being set proper to women is also reason for its being proper to myself. And not only to myself evidently, but to a proportion of men that is transpiring to be larger than most of us would have imagined before the lid was blown off all this affair. I think the strain in society of this relic of the banning of men from a large section of self-presentational instrumentality persisting long long after its proper time is past (if there ever was a proper time!) has accumulated to crisis-pitch. And it now requires merely that the person-at-large step out of the box and take stock of which of their ideas they formerly considered absolutes are in fact merely arbitrary habits. And this has indeed happened to a very considerable extent and it is now perfectly possible & practibable for me to go round at large (so called) crossdressed! But! there are still very stubborn residues of clinging to the old habits; and I think it might take longer than we would hope for these to be dispatched.
When I first started dressing in women clothes, I thought of myself as crossdresser. That is man who likes wearing women's clothing. But now that I am in process of transitioion - changing my body from male to female, I no longer consider myself a crossdresser. I now consider myself as Transgendered Woman.

Cross dressing, at least to me, initially was an itch that at a very young age I found the urge to scratch irresistible. where it came from I'm not sure, although I do remember being envious of girls, and enjoyed playing their games with them, and by myself. i have memories of using my Mother's lipstick, and wearing my sister's clothes, including her underwear. These early cross dressing forays were I think innocent, and done quite openly. Once puberty hit my dressing habits became more surreptitious, were no longer innocent , and were not done openly. These habits have never entirely gone away, rather, over the many years, have grown stronger, and have led to thoughts of transitioning, as well as undergoing periodic HRT treatments to become more feminine. No doubt cross dressing is on a spectrum, but it seems to me, the desire to be, at least to some extent, more womanly, and for most more feminine, is part of every dresser's makeup.

Very Much this. I dress the way I do because I like the way I look wearing those clothes. I am not aware of any other reason or agenda. I just feel comfortable in a dress or skirt, physically and mentally. All attempts to analyse it beyond that just takes me round in circles looking for a justification that shouldn't be necessary and doesn't exist. I like it, it makes me happy. That really is the whole story.
While I don't consider myself "a crossdresser" because I don't do it in private, I do say that I "crossdress" because I am "crossing" a boundary that has been placed upon me when I wear the clothes that I prefer to wear. I don't WANT it to be an act of rebellion--I am actually very non-confrontational--but it has to be.
It seems that not everyone feels this boundary as acutely as I do, but everyone's experience is going to be different. :)
As a person who crossdresses in both private and public I don't actually think it as crossdressing but more as just wearing the clothes I want to wear.
In my head crossdressing is when you wear cloths of the oposite sex and "play" to be that sex. Man or woman. But it is a "play" because you are not doing it all the time and have no desire to eventually transition full time.
A man or woman wearing cloths from oposite sex without crossdressing does not change mannerism. Like a man wearing a dress, is still a man wearing a dress if he does not identify as a crossdresser (or queer, nb, tg etc)
There are drag queens and drag kings too.
I saw my act at my sister's wedding as a drag queen act. I wore a dress and makup (I never did that normally) it was a way to survive and manage wearing the cloths and makeup.

For me, I feel that it gives me a name that symbolises my current mode of mind. I love wearing clothes that are determined to be female attire so that means I am cross dressing. At the moment, I am wearing a bra, pantyhose and a dress under my work overalls.
Maybe if society was more accepting then this may escalate to who knows where but at the moment I am proud to be a crossdresser.
It means my office has a large mirror to make sure I'm dressed properly! I also means I got excited when my first pair of panties showed up in the mail today! Yes, I know I'm really lucky to have an office where I can do stuff like that.

My goodness, cant remember my first mail order panties.
I do remember the Frederic's catalog coming each month growing up. Loved that catalog. They had a small section of mens panties that I wanted but could not figure how to have them mailed to me at 10 years old.
