of all time???   Geez, thats a big order . . .

I'll tell you what . . .  I'll tell you what, I'll name my top 5 movies based on the number of times I have seen them . . .

1) 2001 A Space Odyssey (over 100 times)
2) Contact (over 50? times)
3) Blue Velvet (20+)
4) The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (20+)
5) The Dish (20+)

While Transamerica is a good movie, Breakfast In Pluto is better IMO . . . but neither of them is in the class listed above!

8)

Alexandra, it does my heart good to see you post The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert & The Dish. Both Australian movies and both enjoyable :)
I dunno movies I seem to "enjoy" (if thats the right word, maybe touch my soul would be better) are ones that are tragic ones.
The Notebook - really sad
Breaker Morant (that one should be compulsory viewing for all soldiers)
Gallipoli - was enjoyable till the end then ,even thou its a bit overacted, breakes your heart
Sugarbaby - nothing like some German films to tug at your soul.
The Bridge - another German movie and would you know after watching it a few days later my son got his field gear from cadets and there he was, my very own boy soldier :(
Seems I tend to like sad movies & war movies - what does that say of me :(

Lol, I assume you mean the part about where Hedwig is walking through the ally, yeah I didn't like that part much either. However I did like that the other Transsexual in the band got to be who she truly was at the end. It made me cry  :'( :'(.

The part I didn't like was the fact that Hedwig decided "he" was not transsexual but a gay male in the end.

I've always liked "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead". It's a weird take on Hamlet, where it's told from the point of view of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Also has some offbeat jokes about Newton's Laws. Every time I see it I get something new out of it.

Hmmm really? I guess I didn't see that way *shrugs*. I saw it more as Hedwig passing the torch to the other Transsexual in the band. I never really thought about what Hedwig was going to do. I guess I'll have to watch it again.

Surprisingly there has been a number of great films made or set in Australia that I enjoyed, Older ones:

Year of Living Dangerously
Walkabout
On the Beach

and recently . . .

Newsfront
Danny Deckchair
(indeed, this "borderline" movie might have gotten the thumbs down from me if it wasn't for the Australian setting)

Stephanie,
You jogged my memory :)   Yes "The Man Who Would be King",  I really enjoyed it, reminds me how truely great a writer and poet Rudyard Kipling was.  I can remember from the movie, when faced with a truely dangerous situation,  the saying  "Brass It Out" - stuck in my mind as a philosophy to apply when things look bad :)

Monty Python thou - that sort of humour & acting rubs me the wrong way - yet there are truely very funny situations.  English humour at its very best & worst I suspect :)

remembering with pleasure

Oh yes I just remembered another really great movie that I'm surprised one of our Aussie friends hasn't mentioned.

On The Beach with Gregory Peck. That was a great movie and another one with submarines from the foriegn films section. Das Boot

Cassie you are so right. "On the Beach"  I got the DVD as a Christmas present even - thou I am not allowed to watch it while my wife is home.

It is a really sad movie - I wonder in real life if people would behave with the dignity & organisation portrayed if they were aware that they were all going to die in the near future :(

Das Boot, like The Bridge, excellent movies - and the books were good as well

I like romantic comedies the best (yeah, I know "chick-flicks" -- hey, anything for a tear)

Dave  (Great score, great heart)
Forest Gump  (great score, great heart)
Phenomenon  (anyone can be smart if they try)
As Good As It Gets  (love comes in all flavors)
Harold And Maude  (written by Colin Higgins who wrote and directed Silver Streak and Foul Play - he died from aids)
High Anxiety  (all the Mel Brooks movies are on DVD except for my favorite of his)
American Beauty  (dark humor, clever)
A Little Romance  (an American girl falls in love with a French boy)
Friends  (no, not the TV show!)
Big  (Fantasy with warmth and love)
Goodbye Girl  (clever wit)

On action flicks...

Fugitive  (Great score, great action)
Patton (best action score ever)
Shawshank Redemption (2nd best action score ever)
Das Boot  (I love submarine movies!)
Butch Cassidy  (best dialogue)
Lawrence of Arabia  (spectacle!  David Lean at his best)
North By Northwest (Misunderstood guy wins at end)

On animated films...
Finding Nemo  (loved the heart)
Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol  (loved the songs)
Ice Age  (good caring friends)

All of the movies above have something that I prize a lot...great scores (in my opinion).  I generally prize melodies, something that's somewhat out of fashion these days.  Many films today seem to have rhythm tracks for scores.  Well, as a music editor, I know it's easy to cut or lengthen.

When I go on long car trips, I sometimes play the film on a cassette -- I know what visually happens from seeing the film.  It often sounds like a magnificently produced radio show.

I appreciate movies about transsexuals but don't list them as my favorites.  I keep hoping that, someday, this transsexual thing will be old hat and people will move onto something else.

I don't like violent films -- nuff of that in society already.

I'm just wondering why you consider this movie an action film?

Anyway, I like movies ALOT! So I have more to add to my list.

-Cube,Hyper Cube,Cube Zero (really good scifi movies)
-Dark City (The Matrix stole alot from this movie IMO)
-12:01 (Think Ground Hog Day but add a scifi twist.)
-A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (Very Funny Musical)
-Willy Wanka and The Chocolate Factory the old one not the new one.
-In Her Shoes (Such a touching Film about the bond between sisters)

You're right, Lessa.  "Drama" would be more accurate in describing "Shawshank Redemption."  I like it in that it shows how intelligence and perseverence can win out in the end.  Probably a message for all of us, or for that matter, all humanity.  We all strive to break free of our prisons and walk on that warm beautiful beach.

It is, however, edged out of the best musical I know by the 1983 (movie) version of The Pirates of Penzance.

Wow, so many...

Anything with Ashley Judd, Harrison Ford, Bridgette Fonda, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, or Mila Jovovich. She is my favorite actress. Mila is the coolest chick of all, I just love her. She was in 5th Element with Bruce so that would probably be one of my all time favorites. She was also in Zoolander, and Resident Evil 1&2. She is the orginal tough chicky.

I also like Kate Beckinsale in underworld and the Blade Triology with Wesley Snipes. I just love movies  :P

For movies that are clever I like "The Usual Suspects", "Thomas Crown Affair"..Pierce Brosnan...sigh..best 007 ever..and Shawshank Redemption is another all time Favorite. So is the Green Mile... I watch that when I need a good cry  ;)

One movie I have been watching over and over lately is Sin City. I think it is so well done. It is really violent but very sexy.

I love movies too Lori! ;D

Going off of what your talking about how you'll watch anything with certain actors/actresses I'd have to say: Jim Carrery, Tim Currery, Julia Stiles(I loved her character in 10 Things I Hate About You), Samual L Jackson, Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Katey Segal (even though she hasn't been into many movies I love her TV shows!), Danzel Washington, Camron Diaz and so many more.

I second the motion on "Green Mile."  And anything with Tom Hanks ('cept for that stranded on an island movie - silly).  Ahh, guess I'll have to confess to loving "Lost In Seattle" and its precurser with Cary Grant, "An Affair To Remember."  Sniffle.

And I, too, loved "Six Days, Seven Nights."  Remember Ford telling her something like "You women don't need to try hard to please a man.  Just show up."

Well if you want to talk about favorite romantic movies how about Message In A Bottle with Kevin Costner. I always cry in the end.

Another one I like which you may not see as a traditional romance more of a strong endearing freindship is Gaurding Tess with Nicholas Cage and Shirley McClain.

Anna And The King with Jodi Foster and Yun Fat Chow a story of love that cannot be.

Hmmmm just started noticing a pattern here none of these end with boy gets girl or vice versa. I guess I'm just a tragic love story kind of gal. Nicholas Cage is one of those actors I'll go to see his movies just because he's in it.

Cassie - Remember Nicholas Cage before he decided to go for the big bucks in expensive (and sometimes mindless) action pix?  Remember "Peggy Sue Got Married?"  Nicholas got the girl.  And the best lesson:  That, if we had a chance to live our lives over, we'd probably live our same mistakes because that's what we want, in our hearts.

"Message In a Bottle" was good but it's so sad that he doesn't end up sailing away with her.  Perhaps life is like that but I would have preferred the fantasy.  Fantasies are not fluff to me...they give us hope.  But what do I know?  When a short film I did in college was reviewed by fellow film students, my favorite comment regarding the end of my film was "good as Lassie coming home."

Wow, lots of good movies mentioned here...like many of you, I loved "Shawshank Redemption".  I can still hear the music soaring over the thunder when Andy escapes through that sewage tunnel and is standing in the stream...great story.

I also love movies with a Holiday theme.  Any version of "A Christmas Carol" will do.  I know "Scrooged" was technically a bad movie, but I loved Carol Kanes hyperactive performance, LOL!
"A Christmas Story"
"The Three Lives Of Thomasina"
"Waking Ned Devine"
"Eating Raoul"
"African Queen"
"Defending Your Life"
"The Ghost And Mrs. Muir"
"Shirley Valentine"
"Chances Are"
"Secret Of Roan Inish"

I'm sure I'll come up with more...

It's interesting how, despite our TS similarities, some of our faves for movies can be quite different.  Society tends to lump people together in catagories.  These lists prove our individuality.

I remember some more that had sad endings:  Charlie (Flowers for Algernon), Awakenings (Robin Williams as a doc in a mental institution), and Phenomenon (John Travolta).  In all three movies, people wake up from mundane existence and, for awhile, life is magical.

Let's see, off the top of my head:

Spartacus - does anybody not love this movie?
Waterloo - one of the only movies that actually makes me cry
Cleopatra- versions with Claudette Colbert and with Elizabeth Taylor
Beau Brummell - horrendously funny
Sally Hemings - Cameron Ejogo - need I say more?
Mary Queen of Scots -with Vanessa Redgrave (the David Rizzio murder scene is in my opinion one of the
                              best in cinematic history)
Braveheart - got to love those medieval war scenes
Quo Vadis - love this in spite of the glaring inaccuracies in every scene (but of course it is based on the
book which is also bursting with glaring inaccuracies)
Gia - hot lesbian love action

and many more, but my memory fails me at the moment.
In short anything Roman, anything with Peter Ustinov (the man's hilarious!), anything with Angelina Jolie :-*, and anything at all of historical value.

ok cool this is a revived thread & I get to play too -
not in order, I can't do that, but the top entry is #1 in my book.

Eraserhead (I have Lynch's meticulously cleaned-up DVD of it. Every. Shot. A Masterpiece.)
Natural Born Killers. (some funny stuff dudes and dudettes)
Lolita (Kubrick. Peter Sellers as Clare Quilty. The debut of Sue Lyons in the titular role.)
Fellini's Satyricon (see it baked.)
Mulholland Drive (there is a logic to this one if you know two, hidden, things)
Leaving Las Vegas (got to include one tearjerker flick)
Blue Velvet (Frank Booth to Jeffrey: "You're like me.")
Lost Highway (Patricia Arquette.)
A Clockwork Orange (make a great double feature with Natural Born Killers)
City Of Women (my kinda town...)
Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me (Garmonbozia)
Dr. Strangelove (Ride 'em Cowboy)
Apocalypse Now ("never get out of the boat")
2001: A Space Odyssey ("open the Pod Bay doors, please Hal")
8 1/2 (scaffolding)
Crimes And Misdemeanors ("if it bends, it's funny")
The Elephant Man (captures that whole David Lean atmo. Mel Brooks picking Lynch for this, what vision)

I would only add two. Citizen Kane:

Thatcher: What would you like to have been?
Charles Foster Kane: Everything you hate.

and Chinatown:

Forget it Jake... it's Chinatown.

There is a scene Nero (this goes by QUICK), up on a hill, a car goes by.
I think personally that is a WONDERFUL flaw for this film to have.

Time Bandits puts me in mind of Brazil.

I know Nero, it was really hard to only pick those two, but I thought of those two specifically because Batman Begins ties so nicely into the first Batman done 17 years ago.

I did love Batman Returns though, Danny Devito did a great job as penguin... and who DOESN'T love michelle phieffer?

For those that like horror, has anyone seen   "Dawn of the Dead" the remake?  I hate remakes but in this case to be honest it was MUCH better than the original...you just can't believe how down right good this is when your watching it. I liked the origanal and love the remake.

Peace,

I love the new Dawn of the Dead... it came in a value DVD pack with Shaun of the Dead, definitely one of my favorite movies, and at first I thought, well, it's probably another crappy Hollywood horror movie with a lot of special effects and no story, but it turned out to be awesome (and I love Sarah Polley). Good to hear that somebody else liked it, Taylor.

I have about a million favorite movies, since I have been watching films religiously since childhood, but I can name a few just by looking on my shelves here at home:

A Lot Like Love
Bruce Almighty
Eulogy
Eurotrip
Fight Club
Final Destination (1 & 2)
The Girl Next Door
Mothman Prophecies
Pretty Persuasion
Rebel Without a Cause
Resident Evil
Say Anything
Waking Life

Yeah, they're in alphabetical order, so everyone can tell how compulsive I am now. Pretty much, though, if it's horror or comedy, I like it. Even a few chick flicks (though not such a flaw when it comes to getting along with chicks!).

Yeah, I'm going to respond to my own email... I was just reading over other people's responses, I noticed Clockwork Orange... another of my favorites, and despite having been born in 1982, well after the film's theatrical release, I have seen it in theaters twice.

Didn't know this thread existed. Thank you, Kirsten, for finding it.

My all time favorite is "Schindler's List". Its national (US) opening was in February 4, 1994. Since then I maybe seen it five or six times. It's too powerful to watch over and over again. It should be pulled off the shelf once in a while, like a fine brandy, and savored.

I almost didn't go that night. I was working in a warehouse that handled costume jewelry, and it was close to Easter, so we were busy slinging around 50 to 100 lbs boxes around for 10 hours a day. We expected to work late Friday, and maybe come in Saturday morning, but by noon on Friday we were told what a good job we did, you can leave at 4:30 as usual, see you all back here on Monday.

When I got home I was exhausted. All I wanted was supper, a six pack and some downtime. My sister informed me that she and our mother were going to a movie. "What movie?", I asked.

"Schindler's  List", my sister replied. "It's about a German who saved a lot of Jews from the Holocaust".

"Okay, have a good time", as I grabbed the TV guide.

"Don't you want to see it, too? It's directed by Steven Spielberg".

"Who the hell is Steven Spielberg?" I said, shrugging my shoulders. I never paid any attention to the goings on in Hollywood.

My sister looked at me incredulously. "He directed ET, you liked that".

After a few minutes with the TV guide I saw there was nothing to keep me home, so yes, I'll go.

When we arrived at the theater I was surprised to see it was packed. We had to split up, they went to the front of theater, seats which they hated. I saw an empty seat right on the aisle and asked if it was taken. The people there looked me up and down and said no. I think the "no" was due to the fact that I may be only 5'7", but I weighed over 325 lbs back then. Not all of it was fat, given the work I did. My full, thick beard and leather jacket only heightened the effect.

So I'm watching this movie and after 45 minutes I was crying. The little elderly lady next to me kept giving me tissues and napkins from a seemingly endless supply from her purse. I made it a point to stop the tears long enough to thank her when she handed me some.

What really made that night, and movie special was when it ended. Usually when the credits start rolling everyone gets up and starts talking. If it was a good movie we might even applaud. Not this time. The credits were rolling, but no one had the strength to get up. I wasn't alone. The whole theater was in tears. It was that shared experience that really got to me.

I'm glad you mentioned Schindler's - I haven't seen it since it came out years ago.  One of the best parts Liam Neeson has played. Now I must try and find time to watch it again. ( With tissues of course!)

I'm halfway through the movie Gangster No.1 from Kylos excellent list. Loving the apparent parallel with the TV show "Minder" except on Steroids. The ultraviolence is reminiscent of A Clockwork Orange as well. A bunch of London Cockney Gangsters getting up to despicable acts.

Brilliant. Never seen a movie with " F.U.C.K" & " C.U.N.T." used so much. Carries extra venom with the ghetto accents!

Makes one proud to be bred of Cockney stock!

Yours truly, Kirsten.

The new Ben-Hur movie is really good. I've already seen that 3 times. I may end up having to add that to my list. Gladiator was too sad for me.

Because of PTSD, I've had to stop watching really gory movies like Saw and action movies with lots of gun violence. I do not do well. I'm still exploring new genres.

I did hear it likened to a movie-industry troll by Tom himself - he was at the height of popularity so they expected a cash-in movie from him. Maybe the movie itself is the joke. Jackass-era guy makes a Hollywood movie and gets to do whatever he wants in it. What should we have expected? Lol. I hear there's a lot of meta moments in it so it was probably well aware how absurd and worthless it was.

I watched Blair Witch back in the day and it freaked me out. I do not watch horror type movies EVER.  Action, Comedy, Romance, Drama... those are my go to genres now.

There was only one funny scene where Tom Green is trying to date  Betty- who cant easily get away because she is wheelchair bound and ironically the chemistry kicks off but Tom discovers Betty is a pervert & a psychopath (lol).

Ok, here I go wading into the movie topics now....

2010 - The year we make contact (I liked better than 2001)

Star Trek - The wrath of Khan (all the star trek movies were good however)...

Star Wars - The whole franchise....

Pretty Woman - a classic....

The Island - gives me chills....

Blazing Saddles - laughs a plenty....

This is not a reasonable question. Different movies are liked for different reasons. Choosing a favorite is like selecting a dog at a dog show to be "Best in Show." You have to compare dogs across different breeds, different categories. I'm not saying that it can't be done; but it's damned difficult.

I have been an avid collector of film on DVD. My collection contains well over a thousand titles. But, when I am asked which is my favorite, I typically say, "Gigi," starring Leslie Caron. It is one of the last great musicals produced, and won a cornucopia of Oscars. And the story is top-notch, particularly the ending.

But, I repeat: it's really not a fair question.

We watched this movie at the drive in, when it first came out.

Remembering a small detail in that movie, the "video phone" portrayed and how then it seemed so advanced, and now 50 years later it's commonplace...

My favourite comedies, including romcoms, include
The Ladykillers  (the original)
Kind Hearts and Coronets
Arsenic and Old Lace
A Shot in the Dark
Pillow Talk
Lover Come Back
Send Me No Flowers
That Touch of Mink

My favourite horror/sci-fi horror movies include
Angel Heart
The Shining
The Omen
Ringu
The Craft
Alien

My favourite war movies include
Ice Cold in Alex
Lawrence of Arabia
Kelly's Heroes
Tobruk

My favourite westerns are
Mackenna's Gold
(It is rather stylised but critics would not mind that if it had been made by Italians.  Another critic complained that Gregory Peck was miscast, as though that were possible in any role.  He could have been good as one of the Seven Dwarves if he had wanted to.  The movie has treasure, a sheriff, a Mexican outlaw, indians, cavalry and a supernatural element, as well as an amazing cast.)

They Call Me Trinity

The Searchers
(Partial Spoiler Alert!:
I like the movie but I have reservations.  I think that John Wayne was miscast.  Unlike his usual roles, his character is a robber and bully who kicks a harmless disabled man, as well as being a murderous racist who plans to kill his own niece.  I believe that some John Wayne fans try to emulate the behaviour of their hero and I doubt that all of them would distinguish this role from his others.  However, although it is dated, it is still a masterpiece and it is still the only movie that I know of that shows mortal enemies using the same awful tactics against each other without either side realising that they are doing it.)

Other favourite movies include

Chinatown
Black Narcissus
Out of Africa
Born Free
The Wild Heart (sometimes referred to as Gone to Earth)
The Richard Lester versions of The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers
Sammy Going South
Kill Bill
Quo Vadis
Cabaret
Gold
Rob Roy

The Blue Rose
Spoiler Alert!:
Not many would regard it as a great movie, I suppose but the most romantic and touching scene in any movie, I think, is at the end of the 1961 Steve Reeves film that is now usually called The Thief of Baghdad, although it was called The Blue Rose when I saw it as a child.  To win the princess, Reeves' character must endure many adventures and hardships to find a blue rose and give it to her.  At literally the last moment, he fails.  But then he takes a white rose and says to her "If you love me, then this is a blue rose."

The Return of the Pink Panther is about as good as A Shot in the Dark.
