Title: Starting therapy, going to bring up gender stuff
Post by: Mika-chan on July 09, 2018, 04:59:34 PM
I finally scheduled an appointment for a therapist, and they say they help transgender parients.it's soon ans I'm still trying to figure out if I'm NB/fluid or if I'm a transwoman. Any advice about talking to a therapist? Any red flags I should worry about? The insurance said I can change therapists if this one doesn't fit well for me.

Mika sounds like a great step.  It took a couple of visits before I found someone I am comfortable with.  I wanted to be totally honest and feel comfortable.  One thing I found is the one I am with now ask more questions than the others.   A lot of anxiety has been displaced because I feel I am getting sound advice.  Sure hope you find a good path!  My insurance covers all but a tiny co pay.

Smiles, Mike

Congratulations.

The biggest red flag that there is:  The therapist tries talking you out of being transgender.

Otherwise if you feel comfortable with the therapist and can talk about anything that comes up you are doing good.  With luck they will be familiar with the process and some of the setbacks in transitioning.

Thanks Briah and MikeP! As if right now it's 100% covered for me and the person I spoke to from the insurance was really reassuring about everything, so if things go poorly I can switch therapists easily enough. Just a  couple of days until my appointment. I am both excited to finally start in a more official capacity and terrified that it'll go bad more often than not.
