Is there any good transgender M-F Science Fiction out there? Especially any that has gallactic politics, gallactic war type stuff. And preferably the main character is the M-F TG, and is a lesbian... ;D
Not that I am aware of and I read ALOT of SciFI. Bell Star in the Miles Vorkosigan series The Warrior's Apprentice, comes close But he / she is not TS. Great series BTW
There was another story about a half man / woman charater, but I forget the title and author Trans----something.
TG/TS has not made it into mainstream Sci Fi yet. Pitty.

Already started ^-^. I probably have about 10 different story Ideas in that area that are even somewhat interconnected. But, I have a bunch of other things I want to write too... I'm not sure which to work on the most right now, so I'm kinda randomly doing bits of pieces here and there.
But I wish there was already something out there. I havn't read a good book in a while.

There are a couple of older things out there.
"I Will Fear No Evil" - Robert A Heinlein
The premise of the story is dead gazillionaire has his brain transplanted and it turns out he ends up in the body of his pretty young secretary
I'm a huge fan of Heinlein's earlier works but this is were he started to get a bit loopy.
Still, he does pay a lot of attention to the gender twists.

Another, much harder to find, story was a short story in "Star Trek: The New Voyages II" called "The Procrustean Petard" if you are a Star Trek fan.
In it, the crew stumbles across a "pleasure planet" which systematically takes the crew and gender switches them - all except Spock who instead gets a Double-Y chromosome (something about being the Alpha male) then finds out Captain Kang's Klingon crew suffered the same fate.
It's dated, as the Trek mythos goes....but there's a lot of fun here, particularly the "Nubian God" Uhura and the "delicate oriental" Sulu.

Speaking just as a general Trek fan and SF fan, some of the very best Trek Short Stories are in those two new Voyages books.

I will fear no evil was a great read. Time enough for love was another of Heinlein's that's fun. Oh yes Star Trek, I'm a Closet trekky too.

As to really good Sci Fi. I can recommend "The Prefect" . In reading over a thousand sci fi books, who knows maybe 1500, it's the only one I read twice, back to back. I literally put it down after finishing it. Looked at it and thought...Darn that was good, and picked it back up and reread it. . For fantasy, "The Name of the wind" is wonderful.
One of my best friends is a book editor and I get to read many books before they hit the stores.

What exactly do you define as "mainstream" sf? SF itself is, pretty much by definition, outside mainstream literature. So the concept of mainstream sf kind of eludes me.
I've read quite a bit of genderbending/trans sf, and I haven't been particularly looking for it. Nor am I up on the last twenty years or so--I should think that there would be even more by now. I also seem to remember a bibliography of such f&sf at my uni's library. Can't remember the title, and it was fairly dated, but it's out there. I'm pretty sure it was fantastic literature...

HUm.. By mainsteam I mean books found in typical book stores across the USA... So wait, you mean there is other literature besides SF. jk.
There are stories and books with gender bending themes, The Fool in a few Robin Hobbs books comes to mind. But few that I've found with true TG / TS persona's. But then again I live a sheltered life.
Apart from Heinlein, I can think of Tiptree, Varley, and Lee (Tanith) off the top of my head. There are some anthologies of queer sf, and a couple of the stories in those books are trans-related. And I have read a number of works that are pretty much one-offs--stories whose titles and authors I don't remember, unfortunately. But as I said, I haven't read much of the stuff that's come out in the last couple of decades.
I wrote a real-world-based sf novel with an FTM theme, but I wrote it for myself, not for publication. And the FTM theme doesn't come into the first book much. Not that Robin would be interested...I really don't think any of this stuff, published or not, even approaches what Robin is asking about.
Actualy it all sounds interesting, and I plan on checking it out. I wasn't in for only what I mentioned I just was wondering if that was out there.
I can only think of one other example off hand of a non gender binary character in sci-fi. in the Star Trek: New Frontier series of novels there is a character called Burgoyne 172 who is a true hermaphrodite and is referred to as hir.
What about "the Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula K. LeGuin? It's one of her older ones, and it's not really transgender, but it has a lot of "fluid" characters in it.
Wraethu by Storm Constantine. Not exactly TG to be technical, it's tough to describe, but it fits with that sort of idea. Good read too.

Uhm... Actually there are many cases in Star Trek that were serious ones. Like the Trill girl or whatever
I just remembered today that RAH also wrote a short story with some gender-bending.
It's called "All You Zombies" and is, frankly, a much more clever bit of writing than the novel I mentioned above.
It was in an (out of print) collection of short stories called "6xH" and it includes a few other very good reads.
Well I havent come across any typical books on the subject, though i have recently found a very interesting Manga called "Kashimashi", if you like Anime or Manga. Its not super sci-fi, though the elements are definitely in it, and it meets your criteria! =^.^=

Boy, the rumors were flying about Terry Farrell...I guess she never did say exactly why she left. I liked that epi in which she ran into a former lover and wanted to rekindle the relationship. It didn't matter that the ex-flame was a girl, but it mattered that she had been the lover of a different Dax host. That was a cool way to queer up the episode without making a big deal about the gay angle.
