Don't go near him. He does not do things by the book, and you'll be paying £1000s for nothing. Private clinics are in it to make money. They wont care if your trans or not.

I know because I have been victim of a private clinic who took £2000 of me for nothing in return.

What do you mean by private clinics?  Do you mean a private practice?

I don't know how it is where you are, but here in the states pretty much all transition-related surgeries are done by "private clinics".  The only other option is SOME insurance companies have in-network plastic surgeons who will do transition-related procedures, but in general these people are much worse choices.  The private "clinics" cater to trans patients and often have a personal investment in serving trans communities.
The in-network surgeons (the only alternative to "private clinics") don't have any reason to be invested in trans patients, invested in learning more about trans people, invested in learning to be respectful to trans people, or invested in improving their techniques to be competitive with other surgeons who do transition-related surgery.

Private "clinics" are far and above the better option here in the states.

Everything I've heard about Dr. Crane has been wonderful and I'm considering him for my top surgery.  When you say

Quote"Don't go near him. He does not do things by the book, and you'll be paying £1000s for nothing"

what do you mean? Have you spoken with Dr. Crane and do you know anything about him?  Or are you just saying to stay away because you had a bad experience with a private practice?

Sorry, that comment just really rubbed me the wrong way and I want to understand if you have a gripe with Dr. Crane or just a misunderstanding about how healthcare works in the states?

I do take offence to you saying that private clinics are in it to just make money & they wouldn't care if one is trans or not. Regardless of surgery, I went private and the psychiatrist kindly allowed me to have free appointments due to money being tight for me in my situation.

So I think you should choose your wordings very carefully before tying them all with the same brush.

No disrespect to you but I am just saying   :)

I have no personal experience with him, but I do know that a lot of people in the Bay area liked Brownstein's work. Crane was trained further by Brownstein and took over his practice. It's quite costly out of pocket (for ftm top surgery, anyway - other surgeries I have no idea, I apologize). As preferred results vary per individual, I can only say that I personally like Garramone's work more, but you may like Crane's. The trick is to find someone who seems to have nice results for your body type.

Good luck.

I kind of get where your coming from Devlyn but it just bugged me because here in the UK where i'm from we also have an NHS. Unfortunately a lot of doctors on the NHS can be prejudiced to allow treatment for trans on the NHS (national health service). I just found the comment made by bethanyjadefowell to be negative and a little harmful to those who are in desperate need to have medical treatment, private or not  :)

Just throwing out there that I had a consult with Dr. Crane this week and it was wonderful.  He was super kind, he spent a ton of time with me answering my big list of questions and explaining parts of the surgery in detail.  He's a well reviewed and talented surgeon.

Hi i was just wandering if anyone has had SRS surgrey with Dr.Curtis Crane?

I have a surgery date with him in February.

Personally, I really like him.  I did a consult with him after being disappointed that Dr. Brownstein had retired.  It said a lot to me that Dr. Brownstein had put so much confidence in him and when I met with him I was really impressed with his experience, knowledge, and reasons for practicing.

He comes off as fairly cocky but not arrogant.  He was very relaxed, very confident, almost nonchalant which really threw me off for a bit.  In the end, there are some things I want a cocky person to be doing -- so long as they are as good as they think they are.  From what I've heard/read/seen he is as good as he thinks he is.

I was stunned to read the comment above that said to stay away, I think that's an irresponsible and flippant comment at best. Here in the Bay Area Dr. Brownstein was the absolute go to, for him to have chosen Dr. Crane as his successor and to give him his practice says plenty to me.

Best of Luck,

Lex

It was an irresponsible flippant comment, not all doctors & surgeons are bad so take no notice. Good luck with your transition and stuff  :)

Hi.  This is actually something I wanted to know.  See my other post here.  https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,155946.0.html There is scant information on this surgeon, though his credentials seem reputable.  I have also asked another close friend, a doctor, and she seems to think he may be ok.  If you want more info on the specifics of this, feel free to message me and I can give you this information.

Bumping this because it seems a lot of people are still looking for info!  I had a dear friend undergo FTM top surgery with Dr Brownstein.  His chest looks great for his body type and he lives in San Jose so was able to zip in and out with no problems.  I believe the last we spoke on it, he was still perfectly happy and had no need for revisions.  Dr. B let him make an appointment without requiring therapy after a consultation.  I think it helps a lot of surgeons feel confident you are unlikely to have regrets and be well-informed even before you see them to have a lot of documentation but if they can see you are a reasonable, healthy minded individual that really needs surgery they are happy to forgo the more optional efforts.  He was extremely disphoric and it's still awesome to see him looking and feeling great about himself.  I am arranging for an appointment with Crane's partner Satterwite who has some really great credentials too.  Their office is absolutely swamped with patients and I have never seen or heard negative reviews.  In my research the doctors at the Brownstein/Crane practice all have a ton of experience and research and seem to all be on the (ha ha pun not intended) cutting edge of techniques and current research.  The drainless FTM top surgery is a huge plus for me as drains scare me immensely.  The website explains the procedure pretty well and is in line with my ideas of minimal and controlled procedures.  It says lymph nodes are left in to help the body heal faster which IMO is good because these are parts of the body that really don't need to be removed if they aren't damaged or a source of pain or illness.
