The San Diego trans community has spoken: Trans People #WontBeErased. On the evening of Monday, October 22nd, a series of meetings led by local orgs, activists, youth, and politicians convened in response to the New York Times exposure of a memo from the Department of Health and Human Services that, if adopted, would change federal civil rights law to "define sex as either male or female, unchangeable, and determined by the genitals that a person is born with." Additionally, "any dispute about one's sex would have to be clarified using genetic testing." The implications—which could affect health care access, workplace discrimination, legal documents, and even travel, for over a million people—are terrifying and unacceptable.

What emerged from the meetings is a community response spanning two days that will involve a rally, teach-in, and march. These events are intended to educate and mobilize allies, as well as amplify the voices of trans community members. The San Diego LGBTQ+ community stands united under the banner that trans lives matter, trans rights are human rights, and that trans identities WILL NOT be erased!

Join us Friday, October 26th at The Pride Flag in Hillcrest from 5–6:30pm for a trans teach-in. and on Saturday at 9:00am Won't Be Erased March and Rally

ASL interpretation has been confirmed for Saturday's march and rally here in San Diego! Read below for more information:

Community members will gather at 9:00am at Waterfront Park on the Pacific Highway side. We will march up West Cedar St. to India St. where we will turn left and march to West Date St, then turn around and follow the same route back to Waterfront Park where the rally will take place. The route is about 0.5 miles slightly uphill and downhill going over railroad tracks. Waterfront Park has walkways but we will be in a grassy area.

ACCESSIBILITY INFORMATION: There will be American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters during the march and at the rally. Look for a person holding up the sign for ASL interpretation up in the air during the march. In addition, there will be three ASL interpreter volunteers wearing their SD Pride Accessibility shirts walking during the march, signing the chants so Deaf folks know which chant to sign.

*Reserved seating will be provided for folks with disabilities at the rally.*

There will be a car providing rides to those who cannot physically walk the march route. Please contact Adrian at adrian@thebrownbuilding.org to reserve your spot in the back seat of a 5 person car: 3 spots are available.

Six hundred folks marched.  Trans folks of all colors and kinds, and a ton of their supporters, allies, friends, and families.

Many spoke about their lives on an open mike.  I was especially impressed with the many teens who spoke.  Many of them were obviously speaking before an audience for the first time in their lives.  Inexperienced and fearful, but determined to take the next step . . .

I'm so glad I went!

Sent in my mail ballot a couple of days ago.  (Permanent mail-ballot status as permitted under California law!  I LOVE my State!)  I carefully searched up and down that ballot and voted AGAINST every Republican fool I could find.  Before I sealed it up and sent it off, I went over the whole thing one last time - just to make sure I didn't miss voting against even one Republican.

You can't be too careful!

By the way, I neglected to close the loop on this.  The march last month was very successful!  More than 500 people attended!  It felt great to take it to the streets!

Hundreds rally to preserve transgender rights, recognition

Their voices rose up by the hundreds into a mighty chorus they hoped would be heard all the way to Washington, D.C.  "Trans rights are human rights," rang the rally cry, again and again.

A cavalcade of transgender people and their supporters convened at the County Administration Center in downtown San Diego Saturday morning, then marched into Little Italy and back to Waterfront Park to spread their message that they will not be erased.

San Diego police estimated the gathering drew as many as 500 people. . . .
