Title: What style of pizza and crust do you prefer?
Post by: ChrissyRyan on January 20, 2019, 07:31:34 PM
What style of pizza and crust do you prefer?
This is not a question about pizza toppings, see another pizza thread for that.   :)

Do you like deep dish, Chicago style; thin crust, New York style; thick crust, traditional flour crust, cauliflower crust, cheese used as the pizza crust, or ...   ?

I seem to like them all but have not eaten cauliflower crust pizza or cheese used as the crust pizza.  I would like to try those.  Yes, I have had some lousy pizza but have had a lot of good ones!

I do not like it when there are big "bubbles" in the crust, that does not make for an enjoyable slice of pizza, as the sauce and cheese and toppings are often pushed away by the bubble in the crust as the pizza cooks.

Deep dish, extra cheese, lots of pineapple and what ever mixture of dead mammals.

What is the most unusual pizza topping that you have seen, or perhaps actually eaten that kind of pizza?

The chicken alfredo pizza is the most unusual one that I have seen on a menu.  Although I enjoy good chicken alfredo pasta, I am not inclined to order a chicken alfredo pizza.

I'm not really open to trying the chicken alfredo pizza.
I did not like the Philly Cheese Steak.

I have also heard of spinach pizza, squash pizza, and other perhaps more unusual varieties of what I would call veggie pizza.

I supoose though any pizza with just cheese and no meats would be a veggie pizza. So some veggie pizzas would not be that unusual and are likely ordered often.

To be an outlier here, I have to say hat no pizza is the best pizza for me.  I eat pizza if i cannot avoid it, but i never ever would get the idea, to buy one, not even a little wedge of it!

The pizza in Italy is pretty OK, not like the US version, that is a greasy topping over loaden contraption covered with large amounts of low quality cheese, and in Wisconsin it was common o have the Wisconsin tyle with extra extra cheese.  The fat was just dripping down from it!

Dominos has a Spinach & Feta with onion, provolone cheese, spinach, feta cheese, and parmesan Asiago.

I always have to add black olives.

Yummy in my tummy

Cauliflower crust in my experience ends up making pizza that needs to be eaten with a fork.  It still tastes good, but it's not a direct replacement in my opinion.

I did try out some crust that was mostly mozzarella cheese mixed with egg and psyllium husk.  That worked pretty well for a pizza that you could eat like a regular one, just with nearly no carbohydrates.  It tastes really good, but does take a bit more prep than a regular crust.  Great if you're going for the low carb thing, pretty high in calories though.

I like a regular hand tossed crust.  (or rolled in my case since I never could figure out the whole tossing thing)  I'm not a huge fan of the crispy thin crusts.  I do on occasion like to have the monument to decadence and excess that is a Chicago deep dish.

"The Thanksgiving" at EZ Pie in Braintree MA. It has smoked turkey kebabs, stuffing, gravy, corn, cheese, and a cranberry drizzle on top. Not something that I'd get every time, but a unique, interesting pizza for sure.

Actual pizza from Italy is a lot better then the pizza from the states. The closest I have found from the chains over here is Papa Johns Thin Crust. Now if I can find a decent mom and pop Italian food restaurant I would be a regular.

The Italian pizza is all you get in Europe.  Any European who eats their first piece of American pizza almost feels like throwing up because of how greasy it is!  I still dislike the US version after more than 40 years living here.
I think some things will never change (like disliking the American bread, the square soft stuff; or the screaming yellow mustard).

I'm actually a deep-dish fan,  though these are almost impossible to find in the UK. I had an epic pizza from Unos last year in Boston MA which was lush! I'm certain a Chicago style pizza place in London would be a big hit.

You guys on the island must have a different set of taste buts than the people on the mainland.  Whoever I talk with, can't stand the thick and heavy crut of the US style pizza, most find the crust to thick, and the toppings to greasy.

I am not a big pizza fan to start with, but I also prefer the Italian style.

I disagree, Turkish pizza is pretty common in Germany and is a tasty alternative to the Italian and American take on the dish.

Mod Pizza 's thin crust custom made pizza is about as good as it gets in the States. The Mom and Pop shops of old were great but someone decided we needed fake cheese covered cardboard.

I make my own for me and the fam.

Super thin flatbread crispy crust, drizzled with olive oil and topped with slices of tomato and fresh mozzarella.  If we want meat on it I will tear apart some sweet Italian sausage and pre-cook it drain it and squeeze the excess fat out of it  and add after the pizza is done.

Turkish pizza seems to be a similar invention like the Döner, which is also not known in Turkey and mainly a German thing.

It seems to be an adaptation of pide.

Döner is the Turkish take on shawarma and it was something to be found in Turkey according to my old coworkers from Istanbul.  We all went to a kebap place since it was Halal and they gave me a bit of a cultural lesson on it.

But in any case I found Turkish pizza to be horrifyingly addictive much like Döner

I have had only a very few Döners, because they were not 'invented " yet when I left Germany.  I have the impression the Döner took the place of the traditional German national dish, the Curry Wurst.
I have never tried a Turkish pizza, and have no clue what is different about it, in relation to the Italian version?

Flatbread, almost Lavash like but chewier as the crust.  The seasonings are most definitely middle eastern.  They often throw Döner on as a topping and it really is delicious.  As far as the topping load goes it's much closer to Italian pizza.

The last time I was in the Rhineland, about two years ago now, currywurst was still quite common and still amazing.

I LIKE:
   Thin crust
   Italian or NY style pizza
toppings... pepperoni, sausage, bell peppers, onions, black olives, mushrooms, and lots of sauce and cheese.

I DON'T LIKE:

   Gluten free crust
   Deep dish
   Thick Crust
... so than means that deep dish Chicago pizza is out.
Greek Pizza like is found in many parts of the New England states.
   toppings.... anchovies, artichoke

Where were you in the Rhineland?  I was born and raised there, I am a real Rhinelander!
Once in a while, I make currywurst for my friends here, and all of them like it a lot.  Thanks to Amazon I can get the real curry ketchup from Germany, and Aldi has pretty Ok sausages from Germany for it.
Writing it, reminds me, it is pretty soon currywurst time again!

It seems that i have to try that Turkish pizza next time i am in Germany!

My mother's ancestors on her Dad's lineage came from that area. Ortenaukreis? Something like that.

Most pizzas are round, likely because the flour crust was often hand tossed to get stretched out.

When was the last time that you bought a whole square or rectangular pizza?  Other than at a school cafeteria, these shaped pizzas seem to be mostly for deep dish style pizzas.

yeah, it's still on the Rhine though, but they came here a long time ago. Last name is See, which mean Sea, I think. Johan Martin See, born in 1720.

Yes, it is at the Rhine, but we seperate the Rhine into three distinctive areas. It is the Oberrhein (upper Rhine), in the running along the Black Forest and some other mountainous areas, the next is the Mittelrhein (middle Rhine) the area it runs through are lower mountains, and that is he classic wine area, and after that we have the Niederrhein (the lower Rhine), starting about at Cologne and going all the way into the Netherlands.  I was born and raised on the left lower Rhein side.  This means the west side of the river.  Your family is also from the left side.  The left side was always considered the better side of the river.  I don't know why, but Linksrheinisch was always a more desired location!
A better translation for See would be Lake.  Wich means, the family must have lived at a lake during the times Charlemagne established family names in his empire!
