"Transgender people may soon take do-it-yourself supplements using genetically modified tobacco plants, which they can grow in their homes to produce gender hormones like estrogen and testosterone. This comes from a project of a biologist to develop transgenic tobacco plants due to lack of access of many people to the healthcare they need."
Just what the world needs -- another way for people to self-medicate.
Idiotic.

I know right, they should of used marijuana plants.
Look at me, I'm smoking my estrogen today. ;D
Yes, tobacco... What could possibly go wrong?
Ironically, most endos won't even prescribe HRT to smokers.
I think the article said it would be modified to eat.
brownies
Eat, smoke... it's still self-medicating.
"DIY biology" is a crappy idea for all sorts of reasons; one of which is that GMO organisms do tend to get loose in the environment, and that has unintended consequences. Ask bees and butterflies about this. (If you can find any to ask... I definitely agree that there's too many possible consequences as opposed to how much this could help some people, but with that said, research into such developments I think are always worth exploring.
I seriously wonder what this biologist has been smoking. But the idea is entertaining, I'll admit that :) .
But anyhow, as far as I understand, sex hormones aren't exactly stable if subjected to heat etc. Wouldn't even baking brownies (not to speak of smoking) destroy most of the hormones in these plants?
