Title: a bit psychology related, think this belongs here... advice on this please?
Post by: jaybutterfly on August 04, 2018, 09:42:42 AM
Ok so as I have posted in my recent days, I had an assessment at Leeds GID under a doctor there, and I have commented on things said. I wasn't happy with how the doctor treated me, but there's I've been looking at his background and i've found he has a lot of focus in freudian theory and 'masculinities.'

Im aware Freud gets a lot of criticism, but Im not sure what this 'masculinities' stuff is. I'm wondering if there's anything I can read into the matter so that I can gain an insight into the approach that was taken, because I came away under a strong impression he refused to see my as anything other than a man who needs fixing?

Does anyone have much knowledge of this field or reading material about it?

What your suggesting is the wrong approach to treatment. It might be acceptable when dealing with treatable mental difficulties however there isn't anything wrong with us that could be changed with therapy. The approach that was taken sound wrong and if you would like to know how it should have gone, take a look at the  "the transition channel"  (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfO3B57E6NpIn-KsVjvmLLw). The approach used in the video is the same one that was used in my group therapy in the late 1970's. If this approach wasn't used, this doctor is really out of date.

See Im a long time follower of this channel so I was absolutely baffled. This masculinities thing seemed like he viewed me as a broken boy, not someone whose trans

He may be a good therapist however I doubt that he has had much experience intreating transgender people. This is why we normally see a gender therapist however I am aware that you don't have much choice in the matter.

Im tempted to go for private therapy if gatekeeping on the NHS screws me, and then just go fully private, starting with electrolysis and moving on to hormones later

Just an update I heard back from Leeds today. They've apologized for the distress and are going to give me a second opinion as soon as they can. They have concerns of me being lead into a specific box and worried about how I came out feeling the way I did. While launching a complaint to investigate it might be pointless as it will be my word against his, I have been told if that is to be the case I will not be treated poorly for it or. I may wait until after my second opinion to launch that complaint however, just to be on the safe side.

It's nice to know I haven't been pushed aside.
