I started to learn guitar about two years ago, but then I got busy and I've barely touched it in the last year :(. I should find time to play with it again... I mostly followed along in the How-to book, but I also have a book of easy classic rock arrangements and I've printed off tabs for some video game music.

I own a BC Rich Warlock I bought for $30 dollars at a garage sale when I was sixteen. I got an amp with it and thought it looked cool at the time. I rarely play it anymore
I own a 2004 Fender Stratocaster, Metallic Blue finish. Bought for like 50 off of craigslist.
I also own a mitchell MD100 acoustic guitar I bought from a friend who was on tough times. I gave him $100, even though I know it's worth a bit less than that.
So as a trend, I go for cheap guitars that have a decent sound to them.

I have had quite a few guitars but my favourite is a beat up Yamaha with flat wounds on it. Love their mellow sound and soft action. :-)

Wow a topic I was thinking about creating!! I am an avid fingerstyle guitar player. My preferred instrument is Martin. I own 5 guitars. One is a handmade classical guitar built by Sebastian stenzel, a giannini craviola 12 string guitar that was given to me by a coworker last year!! I also have Yamaha fg75 red label guitar.
The only thing is those are cool guitars but they aren't martins. There is something about a Martin, the sound is so much more brilliant, the bass is fuller heck I even feel professional playing one :) my 2 martins are an omcpa1 and a 000. The 000 was a special guitar that was limited and classified as a finger picker guitar and was only made for 2 or 3 years I think.
I almost never use a pick or finger picks. I love the raw sound of just my fingers. The sound is much more pure and personal. I actually used to have a website with links to mp3s of my music. It starts to get expensive after a while so I took it down.
I have a theory and it might just be me projecting. I think that trans people in general are able to use more of their brains (left and right side) which is why we are good at music and artistic things. Self expression comes easier, it's my theory :)

I used to have an early 70s era Gibson SG black sabbath edition electric. I'm not a huge fan of electric guitars so I sold it after I had it for about 10 years or so. It had the mother of pearl skull and cross bones and shooting stars coming out around the body and up the neck. I sold it for around $1500 or so. I think I used the money to pay for electrolysis lol. The last time I saw one was about 5 years ago and it was selling for $10k. I guess it was more valuable than I thought!!

I'm so jelly... though I think selling it for electrolysis money was well worth it.
When I was diagnosed with a condition that could potentially leave me blind I used guitar lessons as a sort of (ADD:psychological) therapy. It really helped a lot.
And since it was classical, nylon-stringed guitar it also had a nice side benefit of learning Nail Care 101 :D I still like to do them in that asymmetrical way classical guitar players do, even though I don't really play anymore.
I play the bassoon. It's always fun to play an instrument that most people don't even have any clue is. :D
I've been playing for just over six years now. I started nearly a year after I joined here (and I still haven't took even one step toward transitioning :( ). I've been playing instruments for 13 years now, though. I started on the trumpet, tried the clarinet, and eventually came to the bassoon.
I recently got a tenor saxophone (for marching band, but I really love it altogether), and I hope to get to play the oboe as well, someday. If I do that I will be playing all three of my favorite instruments, and that would be cool!

Currently play in a Seattle rock band that gigs pretty regularly.
Kinda anxious about gigs this year as I transition. ... we may not be famous but I do have a public image. I'm terrified of playing shows and presenting as female :(
My house is full of instruments that nobody plays. My roommate mainly plays drums but also guitar and I think it's a vocoder and a keyboard and I'm not sure what else but he's been moping for at least a year, not playing. My daughter begged me for a guitar for a long time and then when I got her one she had no interest in it. We've got little tambourines and thumb harps and such floating around.
I used to play bass a little and trumpet a little, but I can't do either or read music anymore.
I can holler and sing. ;D

I've played a few over the years. My mother taught me piano when I was 5, I played the trombone in the school bands starting around 9, and I played the electric guitar starting at around 12 (mainly for the metal guitar solos). I was also in various choruses all through my school years. The only one I still remember how to play, and do still play, is the piano.
I have a Yamaha digital piano, with the hammer action that feels like a real piano and of course 88 keys. I have it running through an amplifier to enhance the sound. Wish I had an actual grand piano... and some big strong men to move it for me.
I mainly just play classical music, although I do like to play songs from musicals that were adapted to piano. By far my favorite composer is Liszt.
I know how to play a guitar but it's not a hobby of mine. I just know what I learned in school. I haven't played one in practically a year.
Been playing since the eighties. Really prefer an SG, used to be Gibsons but it's Epiphones. I've got four of 'em. As for music, Metal of anykind but preferably I play a lot of Sabbath, basic you know. I also play a lot of AC/DC, another band that is all about the basics. If you haven't figured it out yet I love the basic hard driven sound. As for trans bands, wasn't that the whole genre in the 80's? I remember playing in a band in full makeup covering Motley Crue songs. And I looked kinda cute, even if I do say so myself. Definately felt natural.

People don't run when I sing Karaoke either, they fall to the floor with blood running out of their ears. As for staring a band, go to the local music store and write your info, the genre you play and so on state as to whether you want to start or just try to join one already established.
And for any professional musicians out there really wanting to make it big, always remember the crossroads and when you sign a contract with the devil, your soul is his.
I dabbled in guitar for years but I really sucked so I finally gave it up. I have a keyboard but I can't play it in the musical sense because my hands don't really sync up in the right way to play it properly. I just use it to make trippy soundscapes with delay pedals and whatnot.
Yes!!! I have been playing guitar for about six years now. I really just like to dabble into all sub genres of rock, its great to see other musicians on here.
I'm happy to say that my roommate is back to playing and recording. It's weird stuff, though; he likes to add his guitar and whatever effects to samples he gets from AM radio. He has repurposed garbage that he destroys or otherwise manipulates to make new sounds. He has played drums in a number of bands, but he can't practice that in our apartment and doesn't want to own a car so finding a way to go back to that seems impossible.
I'm still not making music, but I've always ached to do something. I occasionally try to learn how to use some of the music programs that come on the used computers I tend to have, but I'm a digital illiterate and it just makes me feel useless. My hands are really bad, but I wish I could find some way to do more than just listen to music.
I've been playing guitar for about a year now and plan to start a course in music next year! I mostly play death metal and death core and am working on some tech death songs right now which are quite challenging. I have a Schecter demon-6, some crappy Yamaha acoustic guitar, a drum kit I don't touch and an electronic keyboard for when I used to play lol. I'd approach a band consisting of trans people the same way I'd approach any band or any sort of music in that matter. Though, it would be really cool to see a female death core vocalist who can hit some insane lows and highs, would be a sight to see!
Yeah I play everyday on my strat, mainly rock n roll with the blues and folk stuff mixed in. Been working on my sound and recording tracks, getting the basics of mastering down. For anyone that wants to learn how to play guitar, just pick up an acoustic and learn 3 chord songs, that's how I started.
I would love to be a part of a trans band. I'd play lead and rhythm or just rhythm and be the vocalist at the same time. I'm dying to be in a band but until I get my own car again, I can't get serious about gigging yet or joining any bands.

People like my songs, but I get a lot of requests to join Look At The Cute Girls bands, and a lot of "no girls in our guy band" from the guys. It makes me mad. And it makes me question my transition. Part of me wants to keep being a female guitar player and drummer in order to break doen stereotypes. Part of me wonders if my gender dysphoria is partly motivated by the way female musicians are treated. Can anyone relate to this?

I have always had a lot of respect for girl drummers...when they're good drummers. Most just tend to be less aggressive and don't hit as hard.

That's why I play with 2b sticks! ;D If the neighbors aren't pissed your not playing the drums right;D
I tend to switch between 2B's and 5A's depending on the situation. I used to know a guy that always used 7A's...and whenever I tried to play with his sticks they just felt like toothpicks. I could never get enough power...but he was more of a finesse player anyway.
Use what ever sticks you feel comfortable with, The only thing I care about with drummers is timing

So I got this big ass pedalboard for all 11 of my FX pedals a couple of years ago and used the doublestick velcro that came with it to tack them down. Of course, when I hauled it to rehearsal, the tape didn't stick and the pedals went everywhere inside the case.
What's a girl to do? The solution I just implemented works like a charm.
Step 1- Buy a pink bicycle chain.
Step 2- Disassemble bicycle chain completely so that the individual links are loose.
Step 3- Find the links from the outside that are all pink.
Step 4- Unscrew 2 screws at the bottom of every pedal, and screw it back inside one of the holes in the link. Pink side out (of course!)
Step 5- Figure out where you want every pedal in your signal chain. Experiment.
Step 6- When you have everything where you like it, put a self-tapping shorty wood screw in the other hole of the link. You may need a long screwdriver or bit.
HA! They're bolted down now and I'm ready to rock anywhere!

A friend of mine has started a company arranging pedal boards and making custom cables. He gets amazing tone from his rigs. He'll also mod the pedals if the client wants him to...he spent a few years working for JHS pedals and really knows what he's doing.

Played guitar and sang/growled/shrieked/warbled/made-weird-noises in a metal band for over a decade. Been playing for about 16 years. Playing style, probably falls somewhere within the bounds set by Sonic Youth and Burzum with all sorts of shading inbetween (hint, hint)....
Have a custom Jazzmaster replica, an Epiphone SG copy and a few mid to low level acoustics laying around.... Nothing TOO flash.... My dream would be a genuine vintage SG. :)
A band w/ trans people? Well, I feel the same about it as any band.... Doesn't matter what is between yr legs, just don't suck! That said, I've always dreamed of being in an all girl band, and I think it would be a blast to connect musically with other people who know what it is like to have lived life with this pain; this secret.... I think remarkable things could come of it with the right combination of music tastes and personality. :)
Been playing Acoustic off and on for 40+ years, mainly folk/country/country rock (think Peter, Paul and Mary, early John Prine, Eagles). Haven't been playing as much lately as I've been letting my fingernails grow out more. How do you other girls play without screwing up your nails, or do you keep them short? Me, I have fat fingers so I have to fret with the tips not the flats of the fingers.

I play keyboards! I do a little bit of guitar too.
My keyboard is a Celviano (modeled to look like an upright piano).
My guitar is a black Fender Blacktop Stratocaster HSH.
I also write and record full out music! I use the drum key-preset on my keyboard for percussion instruments, and I have a fancy pedal called the whammy pedal, and use that to downtune my guitar a whole octave to play bass for my music. I do wish I had a more realistic sound for percussion, but my guitar sounds fine pretending to be a bass (since it is pretty much a guitar turned down an octave...)
In middle school I had guitar lessons for a few weeks but my mom gave away the guitar and cancelled my lessons (To this day I don't know the reason) and I really want to get better at guitar and join a metal band. A friend of mine said he used to be in a band and I'd like to start a band with him but I'm not as good at guitar as I'd like to be. I want to play guitar in a sort of progressive metal/Djent style way much like Periphery or the direction of the new Veil of Maya Matriarch album, or in the sense of Dream Theater.
I play guitar, keyboard/piano and drums. I had a band with my brother with me doing the writing, vocals, guitar and keyboard, and him on the drums. I still dabble a little on the guitar every once in a while but I haven't touched a paino in years, and that's what I miss the most.

I know my technique is a bit on the rough side, but that was not the point. I deliberately switched pace at times because i was just feeling it. Also, i couldn't use my higher range (i'm a bit ill right now) so certain songs were out of the question. My lower range sounded quite good though. On key, soft, yet clearly enunciated.
I'm a bassist if that counts.
I used to play the accordion, which I miss, but I can't continue learning it due to lack of resources.
I also sing, but not in public.
Been playing the piano since I was 5. Picked up trombone for about 10 years at 9 and picked up guitar for about 15 years when I was 11. Piano's the only one I still play though.
I don't play a lot so I could still improve, but I play rock and metal and been playing for 8 years, but again, not very constantly so don't think of 8 full years. I also play the piano/keyboard.

Music and teaching music is my vocation, every attempt I've made to do something else for a living has led me right back to it in one way or another.
My main instruments are keyboard and vocal, but I also play guitar, bass, drums and whatever else makes the noise I want at the time. I can't tour anymore for personal reasons so focus on teaching while continuing to release music under various guises to keep in practice. If anyone's interested, my site (with examples of what I do and have done) are on my profile.
Regarding the trans band, I was asked to front one that was formed for a trans festival in the UK (and did so). While I like promoting gender issues in music (I released a song for free download for International Transgender Day of Visibility), I don't like it being the main focal point so much as an aspect a project that speaks to a wider audience on a deeper level. Or to put it another way, I don't want "hey, I'm trans, look at me!" to be the takeaway message from what I do, not when there's so much else I want to say as well.

I recently joined a concert band that is composed mostly of seniors. I haven't played in a band for over 30 years, and I'd forgotten how much fun it can be. I used to play clarinet years ago, but I've learned tenor sax for the band.
We practice weekly, and recently entered in an adjudicated music festival. We are playing an end-of-season concert tonight with a couple of school bands. We are supposed to be inspiration for the school kids.
I also play hammered dulcimer. It's mostly a solo instrument, but I discovered that no one wants to hear a solo musician unless it's a singer-songwriter with a guitar.
I started playing bass and guitar in high school back in the late 80's. Played in a garage bands playing mostly covers, hairband stuff with some heavy metal. Haven't been in a band since then though. Don't want to deal with the drama and scheduling problems. That and it seems like the older I get, the more I rather keep to myself.
I have been just goofing off on my own since then. I've bought and sold too many guitars/amps to list. Right now I only have a mim strat. Changed pups to lace sensor golds and did a complete fret job on it a year back. It actually plays and sounds better than the American standard I had before I had this one. (had to sell to pay for lawyer fees in divorce from my first wife, arg.) Although, I have been thinking about putting something hotter in the bridge position. I also flipped the bridge and mid pup at the switch to be able to use neck and bridge at same time, kind of like a tele. I got the idea from a youtube video and like the way it sounds.
Dream guitar (right now, ha) would have to be an elite tele thinline.
I mostly learned on my own, then took lessons after college for a while.
Right now I am in the process of learning the Led Zepp catalogue in the order of release. My guitar has always been what I use to keep my mind off of my GD. The worse it gets, the more I play.

Depends on your level and platform. I use Cockos Reaper myself, but it's not the most user friendly DAW for beginners despite offering super serious value for the price. Presonus Studio One has a fantastic free version to get you started, but you'll need to upgrade to use VSTis (which you'll want to get big synth sounds for industrial music).
You can even get a free version of Protools now, but be prepared to join a waiting list and deal with some annoying licensing software to keep it running.
If you're on Apple formats, Garageband will take you far and, when it's time to get serious, it's a simple step up to Logic.

I play primarily guitar and bass since I have room in my room to keep guitars, but I really want a drum kit so I can learn to play that too xD I have quite limited ability on violin, keyboard/piano and mandolin, and I played in my old school's steel band :D
I've been playing guitar since I was 11 or 12, so about 4 years now...? I play rock and metal because that's what I'm into, I'll play stuff from Soundgarden to Metallica to Rammstein to Sabaton to Tool and most stuff in between xD I've been playing bass a lot more since I bought one around Christmas time, I play the same kind of stuff though I haven't learned as many songs. My favourite song to play on bass is Birth Ritual by Soundgarden, it took me a while to be able to keep up when using my fingers to pick but I got there eventually. I also had a hard time mastering B.Y.O.B. by System Of A Down on guitar (that bit in the chorus got me every single time!) but I really enjoy it now I can play it. I mostly learn by ear, I'm pretty sure I have absolute/perfect pitch, whatever you call it, so I find it really easy to switch between tunings and play lots of different songs with just one guitar. I think one time I was playing The Day I Tried To Live (EEBBBB) and then played 4th Of July (CFCGBE) straight after... I'm surprised my strings are still going, I've had them on my guitar since November! I just need to find a band... I have riffs that need homes
My dream guitar is an Ibanez DMM1 (the painting thing is so cool!) and my dream bass would probably be a 12 string like Jeff Ament's xD
Hey there, I play guitar! Also keyboards, bass and electric violin. I front a (very amateur) classic rock tribute band, mostly singing and fill-in-the-gaps instrumentals. I have a beat-up second hand strat 'cos I'm broke, object of desire is the 2015 Les Paul quilt. God that thing is beautiful!
I picked up my first guitar at 16, played in live bands in my early days, put together a music room for recording in my thirties and have done a good deal of recording. About 15 years ago learned piano and dabbled with electronic drums but not very good with them.
I favor the Gibson Les Paul Standard, Fender Strat and Tele. Amps, Marshal, Mesa Boogie, Fender and Line 6 is my current arsenal. Not much into effects but have the standard ones. A touch of delay and reverb suits my fine.
Music has always been a passion and a go to place throughout my life. I don't think there is a day that goes by that a guitar is not in my hands

It's a far better guitar than I deserve or have any right to be playing, but it just sounds so amazing. It's a La Patrie Etude, which is a cedar top and ends up having quite a dark tone for a classical; it sounds better every time I get it out of the case. I hadn't played it for like 2 weeks when I got it out earlier this week and it sounded kind of weird. Especially the low E. I thought maybe the strings had died or something, but after playing around with it a bit I figured out what was going on - the guitar had gotten noticeably darker in tone in the fortnight I didn't hear it! <3
The lack of a glossy finish lets the wood breathe really well, and I guess it's maturing rapidly. When I was shopping around for a classical I was pretty much decided on a Cordoba, but I was told to go to a local music store that had two of these. Played this one in the morning, spent all day longingly-thinking about it, and bought it that night. I'm way, way too attached to an inanimate object for my own good.

The gold top has a good deal of history from a story of how it was purchased to using it while playing in two bands some thirty years ago and was appraised at ten thousand dollars and only paid eight hundred for it. After many years I gravitate to the center one, it is a relief cut body with out of phase and single coil options. This guitar was rather pricy, $4,500 but worth every penny. The right most guitar has custom pickups and was purchased for specific recording sounds.

The rack contains many items, pure digital reverb on top, power surge protector, next two are guitar effects used live and studio usage, bottom is a Yamaha rack version of their famous DX7 keyboard. Center of the rack is a mixture. All rack items were purchased in the early eighties and so going strong.
The amp is one of three Marshall amps I own.

Here's my Fender, the first guitar I bought myself! It's got sort of skinny humbuckers on it, so they fit into the single coil slot things, I keep it tuned to drop C/D standard q: It cost me £375 from a local, he bought a mix of American and Mexican parts to build it so I can see why it was cheapish but with those pickups and the limited run body I'd have thought it would be a bit more expensive. Not complaining though, I love this guitar to bits! Had it for just over a year now, I bought it a couple of days after my birthday last year. I've put this one throught some weird tunings, I did EEBBBB on more than one occasion and tried EEEEEE to play Mind Riot by Soundgarden but decided against it because I felt like the B string was going to give up if I tuned it up to E (since I'm assuming it's done with three sets of two strings with the same pitch but the three sets are at different pitches because all low E would be terrifying)

This is my bass, an Epiphone thunderbird that cost me £150. Bought it after Christmas. I was going to buy an electric drum kit, but then I saw this thing... I still haven't gotten used to the giant neck, I broke my lampshade with it by accident. The head just went right through it! I do all sorts of tunings on this poor thing since it's my only bass.

And here's my latest addition, an Ibanez thing that cost me £90 with a cable, strap, stand and strings thrown in. I bought it a couple of days after my birthday this year, had to clean it up a bit because it was covered in cigarette crap and dust and everything stank but it's mostly fine now apart from the stuff I'd have to take the strings off to clean. I use this one for E standard/drop D stuff. My knockoff Fender strat's in the background of this one, I think my mum's selling it though since I never use it. That one's got a weird sound to it when it isn't plugged in, I don't know how to describe it, but it doesn't sound like my other two, that's for sure. I'd use it for Eb standard/drop C# if I liked it better, it just seems awfully generic to me. I know the bass is the same colours but I see waaaaay more strats/similar than thunderbirds. Oh, and my tiny Marshall I got for Christmas from my auntie and uncle's there too, and my bookshelf. My very overloaded bookshelf.

Music is one of the things I'm most enthusiastic about. I primarily play bass, but I also write/play songs with my guitar. I also play the keyboard, but I'm quite rusty on that. I'm hoping to learn drums soon.
I started playing bass guitar in September 2005-- coincidentally when I first discovered the possibility of being trans (and getting rudely shoved back in the closet for ten years). I was in a horror punk band for a few years but it didn't last. My bandmates lived to party and during our three years as a band, we came up with only two completed songs. Basically every band practice would consist of them taking over the session, them taking smoke breaks every 5-10 minutes, them drinking enough to no longer focus on the practices, the guitarist being condescending and judgemental and them lecturing me (whether it be over my abusive ex, my basslines or how the anime sequel I'm working on was a load of bs to them).
I got kicked out of that band once during my abusive former relationship. The funny thing is they acted as if they cared so much about me but when the drummer got paranoid and thought my ex was gonna steal her songs and take credit for them (I have no clue where she got that idea from. The only thing he did was keep calling our band by the name I picked which was disgarded because of their own ideas) and she had absolutely no problem kicking me out and not talking to me. After I left my abuser, they suddenly had no problem with me coming back in the band after they had "an amateur" bass player take my place. It lasted only another year because those girls then had a problem with my partner. I'll admit that my relationship with him had a rocky start because of his PTSD, anger issues and jealousy, but it seems like they just plain didn't like me spending time with partners over them. It got to the point where I felt like that band was not going to get anywhere and that practices would turn into lectures against me. Right as I was going to tell the drummer I was quitting, she informed me that they felt it was best if I left the band. Things seemed to plummet when I started taking care of my partner's daughter who was just a baby at the time. My band mates actually tried to tell me that our band was our baby and that I needed to focus on it more than the actual kid I was starting to love as my own. It's pretty sad that they acted like that when in reality they never actually put in as much effort as they claimed.
I ended up losing that bass to a pawn shop at the end of that year (2011). My partner and I were stuck couch surfing at the time (and ended up being stuck couch surfing until a month before our first son was born in August 2013) and we needed the money for the little amount of groceries we could afford. That bass was very cheap and poorly built and the outlet seemed to be attached with glue and tended to fall out every year or so. But I still miss it. Especially now that I know I'm a trans guy and I wanna start learning some Against Me songs. Hopefully by the end of this year I'll have enough money saved up to buy an even better bass guitar. My step-daughter who is now seven is also taking an interest in musical instruments so it'd be cool to start giving her lessons.
My partner is also talented when it comes to music. He started with piano and singing and now he's a local celebrity in our city. On top of being able to sing well and rap, he produces the instrumental beats for his songs. He has had a couple songs on the radio, has been in a few music videos and is busy working hard at his painting business so he can save enough money to focus solely on his music career. It takes money to make money in the music industry unfortunately, but he's got so much potential in this. My bandmates on the other hand... they ended up splitting up and I don't think they're friends anymore. In 2012 the guitarist made a post on their band page about how they "got rid of a dirty hippie and now have a blonde bombshell of a bass player" and that I'm never going to get anywhere. Hmm... looks like the opposite is going to happen in terms of that.

I've been playing guitar since my early teens. (13-14?) Electric and acoustic. My problem now is I'm no longer in a band, and landlords generally hate the 'noise.' (Unless I plug my headphones into my amp or effects pedals, I dont get to play much anymore. Stifled.)

My first electric and acoustic were PAINTED with stickers. (The acoustic very well may have been held together with them. <3) My new matte black hollow body would look cheap with stickers on it sadly. Shes a bit stuck up that way. :3

The only sticker I've had was on the back of a Strat I bought off my heroin addicted cousin years ago, guess he needed a fix pretty bad
Hated the idea of being an enabler, but I'd been recently robbed of my guitars and needed something to play a gig with and I'm not going to pass up a decent playing Strat
He said he'd be back for it but unfortunately he went to play the big gig in the sky over 20 years ago
Anyway, I'm not real big on stickers but sometimes I think about pasting them over some peoples mouths >:-)

Was started in to guitar lessons when I was 6. The only thing I learned is tuning a guitar, but that has turned out to be a great tool. Shifted from guitar to trumpet and it was fun, but eventually I shifted back to my 6 strings.
It is awesome to see the artists on the board here. I currently have a Stratocaster that I built on a donated Asian body and a Mexican Strat that I bought. Love playing, but that is all I really do...just sort of play around making music.

I play guitar. Right now, after having to sell a lot of stuff whilst moving house, I only have a Yamaha classical acoustic guitar. I'm starting proper classes soon. I've been teaching myself for two years, but my technique's not the best, so when I heard about free classes I jumped on them.
I'm rusty on the guitar, but I'm more of a singer, I like expressing music with my voice and gestures.
No new instruments since I last posted here but I was at an air show through the summer (working there with air cadets, it's great: £30 trip down to England for 2 weeks, tons of free stuff from the show and, well, free air show!) and I got so many stickers. I put most of them on my Gio but there's a Rafale sticker on the back of my good strat :)
Been learning a lot of songs lately though, I've been finding so much music I like through Spotify, side projects of bands I already know (Soundgarden > Matt/Ben > Wellwater Conspiracy) and from the bands that people in my favourite bands like (Pearl Jam tagged Roam by the B-52s onto one of their songs in 1998 and that (as well as the fact they have the same name as a massive bomber) turned me onto them). There are no Wellwater Conspiracy tabs on the internet as far as I can tell but I've taught myself five or six songs by ear; I love playing Teen Lambchop and The Ending. I'd have tried to learn B-52s songs if I had the right strings on one of my guitars, apparently their guitarist was missing the two middle strings off his one and used some jacked up tunings so I haven't really tried yet haha
Also, has anyone had problems with Ernie Ball regular slinky strings snapping when you loosen them? I usually buy those strings and it can take me as little as a week to snap the top string while tuning it down a step. I bought ones when I was away in August cause they actually had a music shop where I went but a week after I replaced the strings on my guitar (cause the top string had snapped) I snapped it again tuning it down from E to D. Usually I could get it to about D without it bailing on me, I usually went down to C to play this one Soundgarden song but I dropped it to D that time to play Nothing As It Seems by Pearl Jam and off it went, weeee
Needless to say I was not a happy kid. Previously I'd tuned it up past E to play Black Hole Sun and it survived that, somehow...
I play a fair bit. Most of my free time is spent recording and practising. I play guitar, keys and harmonica. I'm lucky enough to own a few decent guitars; Gibson SG, American Tele and a 12 string Maton 660. Maton guitars are made in Australia and are absolutely beautiful. I mainly play country/folk/rock kinda stuff. Big Dylan obsessive
I played guitar and sang in bands throughout the nineties , mostly our own material, indie rock. It was a good period and I got to wear eyeliner 😊. I play now occasionally, not enough but I'll never pack my electric away.
At age 50 I decided enough of 24/7 computers. I was burning out. I dropped 'hobby' computer work in favor of music. I'm from a family of musicians, I was the odd ?man? out.
Background is all country music. I picked up the fiddle first. why? because I like it, and no one in my family really plays one except my uncle who passed away. Anyways, I did really well for a year or so, improved dramatically. Got to where I could play along to songs by ear. Then, I twisted my elbow. CRAP. I could not use the bow. You cannot play without a bow arm. After a year .. a year! .. my shoulder gave out, another reason. I still haven't picked the fiddle back up, I plan to though.
Meanwhile, I picked up the electric bass. I'm really good now. Enough so that people are surprised to hear how short a time I've been playing it. It helps that my Dad was an excellent bass player. I can hear his play style in my head all the time.
Singing? I never considered myself a singer. I hold my own. @Twonky61, odd that you mentioned 'House of the Rising Sun' as that is one of the songs that I sing. Not Animals style, more like Waylon Jennings but different.
Recent events has kept me away from playing, I think I'll go to a jam tomorrow night to see how much I've forgotten.

Anyway, the question posed by the OP in this thread "who you consider joining a band with other trans ?" and my answer would be absolutely, but ultimately it does not matter, as long as the musical commitment is there. I would like to be in a band that puts forth some originality and perhaps some covers, I love the freedom of improvisation and creative movements...I posted my instruments in this thread I see back in 2014, it's still going today....

Wow V M, I guess it pays to speak up here, ya never what might happen ? I love working with song writers. Networking is how it works. I could pour over 100 of want ads in likes of craigslist, and as well know it's like finding a needle in a haystack. Seattle is full of bands seeking and the other way around, it's an "Artist Ocean: out there... But the right trans band would be awesome...I have 1000's of hours of performing experience since the early 80's, in country bands to jazz fusion, to rock cover bands, to tribute bands. The most meaningful were always the originals !
Music is just so much fun and a big part of my life, like Faith says above, I would like to transition life away from my computer day job, and be a "full time" Musician someday. When I had my GCS in 2016 I took a hiatus from performing. Now my soul mate has been learning the bass guitar recently, and so I've enjoyed working with her and jamming a bit myself.
Maybe someday full time ?

Hey, another noise kid. I've been doing noise myself for about five years. What is it with trans people and noise?
I'm a drummer of close to 15 years experience. Also a touch of guitar and bass, but predominantly a drummer. I've been in like twenty-something different bands over the years, three full length albums, a couple of splits/collaborations, and more demos than I could feasibly remember. Countless shows, and two multi-state tours. I've gotten around a bit.
Lately my music productivity has kinda tanked, just because I can't find anywhere to set up my drums, and I can't find any bands worth joining lately. Also a touch hesitant to join a band, because I'm in the very earliest stages of transition, so I'm concerned about any potential fallout there. So just small scale solo work for me right now.
I've been playing for 40 years. Part of that time was semi-pro in bands as the lead guitarist (along with lead and backing vocals), that played some pretty heavy music. I've gotten more eclectic musically as I've gotten older (I'm 55), but while I love jazz when playing clean, I still love my high gain tones, and have a tendency to crank the gain up on my amp, when playing dirty.
I almost had to quit playing in 2014, when I got horrible dermatitis (it was all over my body - one of my coworkers said I looked like a burn victim), that was traced to a severe allergy to nickel (guess what almost all guitar frets have in them?), and a major allergy to chromium, which is used in stainless steel. As a result, ANY guitar I buy has to be refretted with hypoallergenic fretwire (Jescar EVO Gold). Refretting is not cheap (it costs me $350-$450 per guitar, and I've spent thousands on it), so no more cheap thrills guitars (I can't economically justify refretting them), and so long with buying guitars on a lark, and flipping them a few months later if I find out I don't like them - I'd end up in the poor house, when you throw in the cost of refretting the "flipped" guitars. So, I think long and hard before I buy guitars.
I'm finally once again at a good place gearwise. I sold off all of my good pro-grade gear by 2000, due to needing the money for transition costs, and just to pay the bills in general. Once things settled down after SRS, I started gear recovery from the cheapo guitars I had bought during transition, so I'd have something to play. Figuring I had an opportunity/clean slate to explore different guitar options (amps were a different story - I've always known what I want in amps for a very long time, brutal [but not shrill] high gain tones, and warm, jazzy cleans), I experimented with different guitar options (post transition, I owned a fair amount of Gretsches [no, I didn't do rockabilly, and do not play Chet Atkins infused country music], I still have a soft spot for Fender Jaguars, and I've come to feel that the Tele is the Swiss army knife of guitars - jazz, metal, rock country?, no problem for a Tele!). Some experiments were successful, some not so much. The nickel allergy & need to refret guitars slowed the guitar experimentation down to almost nothing, but I'm pretty happy with the Taylor 12-string I have, Blueridge 12-fret clone of a Martin 000, Fender 60s Baja Tele, and Gibson ES-137 (I was a Gibson Girl for a long time - they were my main electrics from the early 80s until 1999) I have at the present time.
I'd LOVE to get in a band again, but that became difficult at best when I moved to where my current job is, and plugging back into the musicians network became almost impossible to do. Also throw in my age (I'm 55, and I DON'T want to play country, da blues, or klassic rawk in a mom & dad band - I wanna rock hard!), and the options are limited at best (the last band I auditioned for 6 years ago, left me feeling a big, fat "meh"), so I satisfy myself at the present time, by playing my Taylor 12-string in the church band.
My cousin (from my dad's youngest brother), and I may end up being the last generation of guitar players in the family (grandpa was Guitar Generation #1 [he played in jazz bands and was an acoustic guitar luthier - he made me my first guitar when I was little!], and my cousin's dad was/is Guitar Generation #2 [I'm not even sure he plays anymore, since I saw some YouTube vids of my cousin chunking away on my uncle's guitars]), since none of what would be the 4th generation guitar-wise have any interest whatsoever in playing guitar (though one of my nephews does play piano and keyboard).

I get this Ellen above, I am getting older and the market for my abilities and interests seems to be fairly limited today, although I have not been shopping around just yet. Like yourself, I don't want to be in a "mom and dad" band as you put it, playing 3 chord oldies, that scene is just tired and a saturated market. The last band I was in before my GCS was a lot of fun, it was a Jam band with originals and some eclectic covers. I got to improvise a lot in that band, and we had great gigs. I'd like to find a band that is promoting original material mostly. I am still jamming here at home, I try and learn a new song each month, keeps my musical mind active and chops up, I also enjoy helping my soul mate get better herself, it's fun to work with her, it's something we can do together...
