Title: Is bottom surgery covered by insurance?
Post by: Cody Jensen on December 02, 2010, 02:50:11 PM
Or is there an insurance you can get for it? I'm not too clear on it. (I'm talking about phallo). Also I heard you can get an erection if you get a phallo... but do you need assistance to do so or is it somewhat natural?

I don't know about insurance since I'm not even covered myself.

For information on ftm bottom surgery visit this thread which contains links to our wikipages with even more information- https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,70891.0.html (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,70891.0.html)

As far as erections go for phalloplasty
Quotesexual sensation may be lost and an erectile prosthesis is needed to achieve an erection

Insurance ... depends on what you have...currently you might find you have to fight to get it .. but I imagine it will change soon.

My insurance will cover it as long as my doctor deems it a medical necessity

Josh,
the only insurance that I know of for sure that covers it is Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan......has to be BCBS of MICHIGAN. I had that insurance when I had my surgeries done and if you have the "gold" plan (I think that is what it was called, anyway it is the highest plan you can get) it is expensive BUT it paid 100% of my surgeries, I paid NO MONEY out of pocket at all. I have heard that all insurance companies are going to have to offer the SRS surgeries by the end of this year but I'm not positive about that.....just what I heard.
Also if you get a phallo you can get an erection but only with the aid of "rods" ( they are malleable rod implants) inserted in the phallo, after the phallo is all healed. some people have commented on other post and who I have chatted with has lost some or all sensation after the surgeries.....BUT I haven't lost any sensation at all, I have some feeling in the phallo itself all the way to the tip, I had surgeries about 8 years ago now. :)

Insurance companies will not be required to cover SRS at all under current legislation.

There are some insurance plans that cover it. The company is not the deciding factor. BCBS of Michigan may cover it for some people but not for all. Same with BCBS in other states. You have to check the individual policies.
